WATSON SETS UP GROUP DECIDER
Saturday 15th August 2009DJ Laing Cup – Section 1Arbroath SC v Montrose Roselea

Roselea continued their DJ Laing Cup section with a visit to play Arbroath SC on Saturday with Kennedy and Page missing from the squad.

Roselea: McLeod, Miller, Graham, Whyte, Doug Craig, Fotheringham, Mustard, David Craig, Longmuir, Riach, Watson (Brand). Subs: McKellar, Rae, Kerrigan, Strachan, Massie.

The home side had the advantage of the wind in the first half and almost used this to their benefit in the first few minutes when a long clearance evaded the home defence and Sievwright lobbed McLeod but his effort missed the goal.

Roselea responded in 6 minutes but Graham could not direct his header on goal from a Longmuir free kick.

The wind was causing problems for both teams and it took a time before any further near things for either side but it was an inswinging corner that everyone missed in the Roselea penalty are that was the closest.

The away side then had a spell of pressure forcing a number of corners after good build up build up play firstly Miller forcing Hamilton to header behind then from a rehearsed free kick Longmuir saw his cross deflected for a corner.

In 31 minutes Mustard tried a long shot from 25yards after Watson set him up but the effort was easily held by keeper Logie.

Arbroath went straight to the other end and Sturrock tried a shot from distance but was off target.

The deadlock was broken minutes later when WATSON picked up a pass on the edge of the penalty area and fired a low shot which took a slight deflection under the keeper and into the net to make it 1-0.

WATSON was on fire and doubled the lead in 43 minutes with a stunning strike. Picking up the ball 40 yards from goal and advancing slightly, the striker hit an unstoppable shot over keeper Logie and into the roof of the net.

HALF TIME – ARBROATH SC 0 ROSELEA 2

McLeod was called into action early in the second half having to go down to hold a free kick from a dangerous position.

Watson was never out of the action and after being cautioned, latched on to a long ball but his cross saw Fotheringham unable to connect properly.

The wind was still causing problems for both teams and football was difficult to be played and made for a lack of chances at either end.

Watson was again the man to create for Roselea but this time his cross saw Longmuir’s header well saved by Logie low down at his right hand post.

In 75 minutes a long ball over the home defence saw Watson chase but the striker put his attempt over the bar.

The away side made a change shortly after with Brand coming on to replace Watson in a straight positional swap.

McLeod was again called to make a save but had no trouble in holding the effort from Sievwright.

Roselea finished the game strongly with firstly Fotheringham having a header well saved by Logie and then the keeper forced to save from Brand after slack defending by the home side.

FULL TIME – ARBROATH SC 0 ROSELEA 2

Another win for Roselea but not a convincing performance which can be put down partly to the blustery conditions.

This Saturday (22nd August) Roselea entertain Brechin Vics in the deciding match of this section with the home side needing to avoid defeat to qualify from the group. The game at Broomfield Park is a 2.30pm Kick off and some Hospitality is still available by contacting Roy Gill on 07908763219.
