A Big Thanks

Thank you to all of our sponsors and athletes for participating in this year's 3rd Annual Poker Ride. This is MBM's one and only fundraiser for our youth and junior triathlon team. The money raised goes towards purchasing and screening the uniforms our athletes wear. These uniforms run around $220 + screening fees per each athlete. To defray the costs that parents must pay for their childs/teens uniform, MBM hosts this fun bicycle event. This year we raised $2000 thanks to all of you!!

Our Poker Ride "best poker hand" winner, for the second year in a row, was Vera N. She graciously declined her $100 and donated back to MBM. Thank you again Vera!!

The raffle prizes from our sponsors, Jocelyn's Bicycle Shop, Winning Wheels, Jelly Belly Candy Co., Flex Power, Blue Seventy Wetsuits, Avia, Trader Joes, Chipotle, Fleet Feet, Jamba Juice Bobcat Bicycles, Teil, and CPK, P.F. Changs were a big success. Once again, thanks to all of you.

We look forward to seeing all of you at next years event!!

Hannah Rae Finchamp's Strawberry Fields Race Report
Wow! The Strawberry Fields Youth Elite race was such an exciting event for

me, both physically and mentally! This was the first youth elite race where I

was able to truly experience racing in a strong pack. The youth girls all worked

together so well!  They are all so strong and talented.  It's incredible to see

how much strategy is put into ITU racing: knowing how to take your pull, sit on

someone's wheel and when to break away.  In races like this one, every little

thing is important.  Every second counted and the transitions were so intense!

I was fortunate enough to have a completely smooth race this weekend and that's

pretty much what you need. There is no room for error in these short and fast

youth elite races!

Caton Avilla's Strawberry Fields Race Report
Hello my name is Caton Avilla and I’m a triathlete on Monterey Bay Multisport. I am 14 years old and live in Wilton, California. Last weekend I raced at Strawberry Fields triathlon in Oxnard, CA. The race was fun and scary at the same time. The fun part of the triathlon was that I met a lot of kids from different states and became friends with a lot of them. I also saw a lot of the same friends that I met at nationals. The race was also a little scary as well. The kids that I would be racing were some of the best in the nation, and I had no idea how I would do. Once the gun went off at the starting line, all those nerves and butterflies went away, and all I could think about is getting to the finish line as fast I could. In the en d, I placed 3rd for the Youth Elite male category. I was very happy with my result, and I felt like I gave it my all. After the race, all of my new friends and I had fun body surfing in the ocean. Now looking back at last weekend I understand why I do triathlons. The first is for the passion I hold for the sport, second is the friends made along the way, next is for always learning from my mistakes before or during the race, and finally is just the sense of accomplishment that I feel when I know that I have given it my all and no one could ask for anything more. I will always remember the fun weekend I had at Strawberry Fields.

The San Francisco Triathlon at Treasure Island by Hannah Rae
Here is what Hannah Rae had to say about her race at the San Francisco Triathlon at Treasure Island on July 12. Hannah Rae competed in the sprint race and was the 1st place female overall!! Congrats Hannah!!

"Wow! What a great race! Everything felt right from the beginning to end. I think I can attribute my success to the progress I made at skills camp...especially in my biking. It really motivated me to train hard...thanks coaches! You're the best!"

Leslie Pfeiffer's San Francisco Triathlon Race Report
Treasure Island Triathlon at San Francisco continued on Sunday with the Sprint Distance that consisted of an 800 swim, about a 12 mile bike, and a 5K run. The weather conditions were spectacular with the water temperature at a brisk 60 degrees! The 12 mile ride was headed by a slight wind but all in all the technical race course benefitted the MBM team alltogether. I feel that I can say in all confidence that the run was smooth and inspiring with specators cheering on the finishers. All in all the MBM team dominated the race course with a first place overall finish from Hannah Rae and a 3rd place overall finish by me (Lesley Pfeiffer). Chris Hinrichs also won his age group with a fantastic run finish that looked as if he could go forever. Great Job Everyone!! Overall, TriCalifornia again put on another amazing race and I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't competed in it so far.

May's Workout of the Month

                                        Sport Beans/NTTC Training Tips

Alexis “Pinkie the Tiger” Waddel-Smith

There are many races where you must be able to run up hills efficiently as well as maintain a high cadence on the flats. One of my favorite run workouts incorporates both hill training as well as flat time trial tempos. The best place to run this workout is where you have access to a hill that will take you at least 2 minutes in duration to run up and moderately elevated (ie. Nothing too steep that you couldn’t run up and no false flats!) in addition to a flat 5 minute course. If you are new to hill repeats and tempo runs, I would suggest starting with one set of the workout listed below. For those of you are regularly completing intervals you may begin with 2 sets and work your way to 3 sets.

Hill & Tempo Run Workout4 x 2” uphill w/ downhill jog RI    4 x 1” uphill w/ downhill jog RI1 x 5” flat tempo w/ 5-10 min jog RI After the first interval for each of the uphill repeats and the 5 minute tempo run, I take notice of how far I went by placing a marker on the ground. For every consecutive interval my goal is to get to the same spot in the same amount of time. If I’m really “on fire” then I’ll set my sights on going just beyond where I’ve set my marker.  I do this work out in a park on dirt trails, however, you can do this work out where ever you have access to a hill with nearby adjoining flat terrain.   Implementing this training once every other week as a staple interval workout will improve your power and efficiency to run up hills as well as maintain your speed on the flats. Happy Training!

Osgood Recognized as USAT Developmental Coach of the Year

CONGRATULATIONS SHOZ!! Please see the article that was on the USAT Southwast Region website (http://www.usat-southwest.org/news/coach-of-the-year.html). We are so proud of you!!

USA Triathlon March 26, 2009

USA Triathlon and its National Coaching Commission have recognized Sharon Osgood of Carmel Valley, Calif., as the 2008 Developmental Coach of the Year.

A Developmental Coach of the Year nominee is coach of a youth club, high school or junior-level coach, or a coach directly responsible for training athletes to the junior and/or elite level.

Osgood, a USAT Level II Certified Coach, has been actively involved in working with young triathletes in California through Monterey Bay Multisport. She was instrumental in the team’s selection as a USAT High Performance Team and in the team’s silver medal performance in the USAT Developmental Team National Championship in 2008.

“I’m pleased to have been recognized for the work that I do. I feel extremely fortunate that my chosen profession is fun, intriguing, educational and always changing,” said Osgood. “When working with young people, you never know what to expect. It’s refreshing. It’s also very rewarding and satisfying to see the young people you work with growing in a lifestyle sport. I would hope this inspires other coaches in our field to do what I’m doing with the younger athletes.”

Several of the athletes Osgood works with are among the top 10 in the youth elite and junior elite rankings, while others are making the transition to the U23 and collegiate ranks. Among the athletes she has trained are Marissa Ferrante (Nationally Ranked #2 Junior Elite Female; 1st Place – Strawberry Fields Junior Elite Cup; 3rd Place – USAT Junior Elite National Championships), Kalen Darling (22nd Place – Kelowna ITU Continental Cup; 25th Place – Geneva ITU Continental Cup), Hannah Rae Finchamp (Nationally Ranked #2 Youth Elite Female; 4th Place, USAT Youth Elite National Championships), Caton Avilla (Nationally Ranked #7 Youth Elite Male), and Clark McLennan (Nationally Ranked #7 Junior Elite Male).

Because of this commitment to assisting developing athletes, Osgood has played an instrumental role in the growth of USAT’s athlete development pipeline. She has served as a USAT Junior Select and Skills Camp director, and has been a USAT Regional Athlete Development Coordinator for the Southwest Region since 2005.

As a Regional Athlete Development Coordinator, Osgood has contributed countless hours managing the nation’s only viable Regional Junior Elite Cup series and she has been key in developing a regional grant funding program to assist athletes to national level events and coaches to education programs.

The USAT National Coaching Committee is made up of some of the finest multisport coaches in the world. Committee members volunteer their time and knowledge for the sport, the athletes and the coaches. The mission of the NCC is to promote professionalism in multisport coaching and advise USAT staff regarding coach education.
