2008 State Championship Tournament

State softball: Monroe wins
The Bearcats headed off to the State tournament as the Wesco 3rd seed and started the tournament with a win against Central Kitsap in the first round behind Birch's no hitter with 14 strikeouts. The Bearcats broke a scoreless tie with two outs in the top of the sixth, when Megan McKinney’s bases-loaded line drive was misplayed by the rightfielder to score both Monroe runs. The Bearcats next faced tournament favorite Shadle Park (21-0) in a quarterfinal at 3 p.m.

PREP SOFTBALL: Monroe bumped by defending champs, still in the hunt for a trophy
By Scott M. Johnson Herald Writer
TACOMA -- If the Monroe fastpitch softball team was even the slightest bit intimidated by the prospect of facing unbeaten defending champion Shadle Park in a 4A state tournament game on Friday afternoon, the Bearcats certainly weren't showing it. After leadoff hitter Jordan Birch hit a deep fly ball on her first at-bat against University of Oregon-bound pitcher Sam Skillingstad, she returned to the dugout and told several teammates: "She's so hittable." Monroe's next batter, Tessa Degel, ran out a passed ball and bumped Shadle Park first baseman Megan Skillingstad -- Sam's freshman sister -- so hard that the first baseman fell on her behind. And then No. 3 hitter Briar Stanley followed up a sharply-hit single by exchanging a few spirited words with the younger Skillingstad at first base.

The Bearcats had plenty of bark heading into their quarterfinal matchup with the state's top team. But in the end, Shadle Park bit back in a big way. After Sam Skillingstad led off the second inning with a solo home run -- the first earned run off Birch in six games -- Shadle Park's Highlanders cruised to their 22nd consecutive victory by way of a 7-1 win over Monroe. And the only talking the Bearcats could do afterward was about what could have been. "They're the defending champions, and they play with a lot of confidence," Monroe coach Curt Eskeback said. "We made some mistakes in one inning (the third), and good teams take advantage of that. Other than that, it's just wouldas, couldas and shouldas."

Birch's afternoon came apart shortly after the home run, but not necessarily because of it. After yielding a 290-foot shot to the elder Skillingstad, and offering her congratulations as Shadle Park's star rounded third, Birch struck out the next three batters to finish the second inning. But her final strikeout came with a toll. A callous on her index finger that has been bothering her for a few weeks broke open on the pitch. She later said she was not allowed to tape it up, so Birch applied a little Super-glue and pitched through the pain. Obviously bothered by the injury, Birch gave up a leadoff double to start the third. Another hit and two Monroe errors opened the door for five Shadle Park runs and a 6-0 Monroe deficit.

"(The injury) was painful, but mostly I was frustrated because of the way the game was going," Birch said of the third-inning meltdown. "We just had one bad inning." Birch pitched just one more inning after that. After throwing a no-hitter with 14 strikeouts in Monroe's opening-round win Friday morning, she gave up six runs off three hits in the quarterfinal.

Stanley ended Skillingstad's shutout bid with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning. "It felt great," Stanley said. "Sam's an awesome pitcher -- she's going to Oregon -- so it feels great to hit one off her." As for the early fireworks, Stanley said: "We were fired up; they were fired up. Those first couple of innings, we played with them and it looked like it was going to be a good game."

Birch returned to the mound for a consolation game against Mountain View late Friday night and pitched a 1-0 shutout to keep the Bearcats' season alive. She also scored the game-winning run on a passed ball in the top of the seventh.

PREP SOFTBALL
Monroe was the only remaining local team heading into Saturday play. But the Bearcats bowed out after an exciting, eight-inning game against Wilson of Tacoma. Wilson beat Monroe 6-4 to end the Bearcats' season.

For the second day in a row, Wilson's Anthea Aasen knocked out a Snohomish County team when she drove in a pair of runs with a single in the top of the eighth. Aasen, who beat Marysville-Pilchuck with the game-winning hit Friday night, tied Saturday morning's game 1-1 in the seventh before teammate Courtney Cabrera cleared the bases with a double for a 4-1 lead.

Monroe rallied in the bottom of the seventh, tying the score on Tessa Degel's two-RBI double. But Aasen struck again in the top of the eighth, doubling with runners on first and second.

 Bearcats 2008 District Tournament
Wesco 3rd Place

Monroe 1, Mountlake Terrace 0: The Monroe Bearcats took the hard road to the state tournament, winning back-to-back games Saturday after falling to Marysville-Pilchuck the previous day.

Monroe's ace pitcher, Jordan Birch, continued to dominated the competition with 14 shutout innings. She allowed just one run -- it was unearned -- in 28 innings of tournament play.

Birch (17-3) gave up just two earned runs in 148 innings during the regular season and district tournament. She struck out 57 batters in the four games of the tournament, including 13 in each of Saturday's wins.

Teammate Briar Stanley drove in the game-winning run in a 2-0 victory over Cascade in Saturday's opener, then Tessa Degel drove in the lone run as the Bearcats (18-3) beat Mountlake Terrace 1-0 in the winner-to-state game.

It marks the third consecutive trip to the state tournament for Monroe, which got a boost from the return of senior Shannon Fretz. She was playing for the first time since suffering major injuries in a car accident on Highway 2 in

1-1 In First Round

After a season of close one run wins, the District tournament would prove to be much the same. In the first round game against Kamiak the score remained tied at 0 until the 5th inning when Briar Stanley lead off with a single and ended up scoring the game winning run. The second game against Marysville ended in the same score but this time the Bearcats were on the losing end.

Birch struck out 14 and coupled with the 18 she fanned in the 1-0 win over Kamiak, the senior had 32 strikeouts in 14 innings.

"You have to score one to win and every loss we've had this season has been 1-0," Monroe coach Curt Eskeback said of his 17-3 team. Fritz had eight strikeouts and allowed only two singles by Birch.

Last duel for star pitchers

This week two of the area's best softball pitchers, Cory Mattson and Jordan Birch, will battle for the final time in their prolific prep careers. Mattson is scheduled to lead 3A Everett (5-1 Western Conference North Division, 7-1 overall through last week) against Birch and 4A Monroe (4-1, 5-1) 6 p.m. Friday at Lincoln Field. It will be the second of two regular-season clashes between the teams, which will play in separate district tournaments, assuming they both qualify. Birch and Mattson combined to strike out 25 batters March 18 when Monroe beat Everett 2-0.

April 11th 2008 - Monroe vs. Everett

Monroe powers past Everett

Bearcats heat up in extra innings, break 0-0 deadlock in eighth
By Nick Patterson Herald Writer
EVERETT -- For seven innings the Monroe High School softball team's bats were as frigid as the temperature -- after the sun had ducked below the horizon. But once extra frames arrived, it was as if someone had taken those bats and stuck them in the microwave. As a result, the Bearcats put themselves in pole position in the Western Conference North Division. Monroe erupted for four runs in the top of the eighth to break a scoreless deadlock, and the Bearcats went on to defeat the Everett Seagulls 4-0 Friday night at Lincoln Park. Tessa Degel's ground-rule double drove in the game's opening run. Later in the inning, Catherine Brakke added a two-run homer -- the first of the freshman's career -- as Monroe broke open what had been a pitcher's duel between the Bearcats' Jordan Birch and Everett's Cory Mattson.

"We were hitting randomly throughout the entire game and it just all came together in that last inning when we needed it," said Birch, who opened the rally with a double. Now Monroe (6-1 league, 7-1 overall) finds itself in sole possession of first place in the Wesco North. The Bearcats also swept both of their games against Everett (5-2, 8-2), which came into the game tied for first. "It was a huge deal," Degel said of the victory. "Now we're ranked first in our division and it really meant a lot to us. We wanted this game a lot."

It looked as though the game was headed late into the night as Birch and Mattson continued to put zeroes on the board. Through seven innings Monroe had managed a measly two singles. But it all changed in the eighth. It began when Birch led off by lining a double to the wall in right-center, this after twice having foul pops elude Everett fielders. One out later, Degel laced a line drive over the head of the left fielder, the ball bouncing over the fence for an RBI double and a 1-0 lead. "I was just up there relaxed and let it fly," Degel said. "Birch got an awesome double and I finished it up."

But Monroe wasn't done. With two outs, Haley McCutchan dropped a bloop single into left to score a second run. Then Brakke followed by belting a two-run shot to center to make it 4-0. That was more than enough for Birch. The reigning Herald All-Area Player of the Year finished with a two-hit shutout, striking out 17. "It was really fun, I just felt in a groove," Birch said. "It felt really fun that once you're up on a batter you feel like you've got them."

Meanwhile, the Seagulls were left lamenting missed opportunities, both on offense and defense. Everett had a chance to win it in the bottom of the seventh when Birch had a rare lapse, walking a pair to give the Seagulls two runners on with one out. However, Birch bore down and struck out back-to-back batters to end the threat. Then when defensive plays, though difficult, were there to be made in the eighth, Everett was unable to convert. "I thought it was a great game for seven innings," Everett coach Kyle Peacocke said. "But our defense was not good in the eighth inning and I thought that was the difference in the game. "Jordan's obviously a good pitcher, but the last three times we've played them it's come down to defensive errors."

Mattson was nearly Birch's equal through seven innings, though she had to pitch herself out of jams in the first and sixth. Mattson finished with a six-hitter, striking out 14. Though the Seagulls now find themselves looking up at the Bearcats in the standings, they're not conceding the division title just yet. "We know that to be league champs you have to go through Monroe one way or another," Peacocke said. "But they did get beat a week ago (a 1-0 loss to Cascade on April 1), and I'm not going to say a league title is out of the question because we still have a long way to go."

The Emotion of it All

Herald Writer
You know my favorite part of prep sports? The emotion. True joy, ultimate sadness; pure, unadulterated emotion. I shoot a ton of sports, none so much as preps, and although the play is normally not a fast and the players not as skilled as their college and professional counterparts, the high school game has feeling. In pro sports, you see emotion, but normally not until the title game. Those guys and gals play for money and most of the joy they had for the game is long gone, replaced by something that resembles work. They have the skills to make the game look amazing, but most lack the emotion that photographers crave. College comes close to the emotional level of high school sports, but those players are still kind of playing for money (they just call it scholarships).

Friday night at Lincoln Field in Everett, I was fortunate to witness an amazing softball game between Everett and Monroe, two of our top softball teams in the county. The thing that made this game even more than two top teams facing each other were the pitchers. Everett’s Cory Mattson, the Herald’s All-Area Player of the year in 2006, struck out 14 and Monroe’s Jordan Birch, the Herald’s All-Area Player of the year in 2007, fanned 17. It was amazing display of power and craftiness on the mound.

The two pitchers held their respective opponents scoreless through seven innings and the game went into extra frames. The wheels fell of the bus for Everett in the eighth and Monroe ended up taking a 4-0 lead, which they held onto for the eventual win. Two runs were scored the traditional way and the final two were scored the exciting way: a two-run homerun. When a prep kid jacks a homerun, their teammates are allowed to great them at the plate and whack the heck out of their helmet. I’m glad there was a homerun; it made a nice photo of totally excited prep softball players.

Cascade turns lone hit into 1-0 win over Monroe

Herald Staff
MONROE -- Cascade managed just one hit, but still found a way to beat Illinois State-bound pitcher Jordan Birch.

Samantha Munger was hit by a Birch offering in the top of the sixth inning and advanced to second on a fielder's choice. Munger moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a dropped fly ball with the contest's only run as the Bruins edged the Bearcats 1-0 in Wesco North action on Tuesday. "It was a great win," Cascade coach Wendy Close said. "It's a great win any time you can beat Monroe with Birch pitching." Kelsey Rutter struck out six batters and allowed just three hits as she picked up the win for Cascade, which committed no errors behind her. "I thought we played well defensively and hung in there," Close said, "Kelsey pitched a really good game and I can't say enough about my defense."

Monroe's Jordan Birch, Bearcats win duel

In a matchup of two of the area's elite hurlers --Monroe's Jordan Birch and Everett's Cory Mattson -- Birch leads Monroe to a 2-0 win Tuesday
By Mike Can Herald Writer
MONROE -- With a pair of future Division-I pitchers taking turns on the mound, offense took a back seat. As expected, Monroe High School's Jordan Birch and Everett High's Cory Mattson -- two of the area's elite throwers -- consistently dominated hitters Tuesday in a Western Conference North Division softball game at Park Place Field.

Hits were few and far between in the division opener for both teams, so it came down to mistakes. Everett made more, including three errors that led to both runs in Monroe's 2-0 triumph.

Birch, The Herald's 2007 All-Area Softball Player of the Year, was solid for Monroe (2-0 overall), tallying 12 strikeouts and allowing two hits. The Illinois State University recruit also singled, stole a base and scored the Bearcats' second run. "There's no question that she's without a doubt the best pitcher in Wesco and one of the top two or three pitchers in the state," Everett coach Kyle Peacocke said. Often throwing with first-pitch strikes, Birch had seven strikeouts through the first three innings. Everett (2-1 overall) moved runners to third base just twice all game and Monroe played flawless defense. Alexandra Hudson (2-for-2 with a triple) was the only Everett player to get a hit against Birch. "If she gets ahead of you (in the ball-strike count) she can pretty much do whatever she wants to do. She's really smart. I tip my hat to her," Peacocke said of Birch.

Everett's Mattson, The Herald's 2006 All-Area Player of the Year, pitched well too. The University of North Carolina at Greensboro-bound senior had 13 strikeouts in six innings, allowing three hits and zero earned runs. Monroe scored single runs in the second and fourth innings.

Tessa Degel scored the Bearcats' first run. After Briar Stanley's triple to left field, Degel did a squeeze bunt. Everett threw out Stanley at home, but then a Seagull throwing error allowed Degel to come all the way around and score. Birch led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a bloop single to right field. Her stolen base and two more Everett errors helped Monroe go ahead 2-0. Monroe coach Curt Eskeback said he was pleased with how his team capitalized on Everett's miscues. "It's just a good way to start (the league schedule)," he said.

"Every game's big. Everybody wants (to beat) us," said Eskeback, whose team has won the past three Wesco North championships. Everett, which gets a rematch against Monroe April 11, had a few chances to score against Birch. The last opportunity came with two out in the top of the sixth inning. Following her triple, Hudson raced home when Birch's high pitch got past Stanley, Monroe's catcher. Hudson slid to the plate but was tagged out by Birch. Two innings earlier Everett had runners on second and third with two outs. Lauren Hope smashed a line drive to the outfield, but it was caught by Monroe center fielder Megan McKinney.

Said Peacocke, "If that ball's 2 or 3 feet one way or the other it's a whole new game." After tossing a perfect game last week in her season debut, Birch gave up a hit to the second batter she faced Tuesday. It didn't faze her much, though. "It's bound to happen," said Birch. "I'm not perfect."

Maybe not, but she's usually awfully close.

I enjoy fastpitch and if you've never seen a game between two quality teams, you're missing out. That showdown between Jordan Birch of Monroe and Cory Mattson of Everett sounded like a classic -- 25 combined strikeouts! Monroe won, 2-0, on a pair of unearned runs.

Morning stars
1. Jordan Birch, Monroe softball. OK, so we'll be seeing a lot of her here this spring, but performance against Everett is noteworthy: 7 innings, 12 Ks, 2 hits, 2 BB. Plus she singled and scored a run.

Monroe's Birch pitches 3rd perfect game

EDMONDS -- It wasn't just dominant, it was perfect -- again. Monroe senior Jordan Birch pitched a perfect game for the third time in her prep softball career as the Bearcats defeated Edmonds-Woodway 7-0 Wednesday.

Birch, The Herald's 2007 Softball Player of the Year, struck out 17 of the 21 batters she faced in Monroe's season-opening victory. "She just got in a zone and was incredible to watch," Monroe head coach Curt Eskeback said. "She was totally in control and all her pitches were working. It was a perfect game and quite a sight to see."

Edmonds-Woodway was able to put the ball in play just four times. Birch, who will play for Illinois State next year, pitched two perfect games last season and a no-hitter.

Eskeback said while he wasn't surprised to see Birch pitch another perfect game, he was impressed. "I had been a coach for 12 years and never had a girl pitch a perfect game," Eskeback said. "Last year, she did it twice. Now, she starts off her senior season doing it again. It's just amazing."

Birch picked up all the offense she needed in the fourth inning, as Monroe scored four runs. Monroe's Briar Stanley was 3-for-4 with a triple and an RBI.
