Coach's Corner - May 9, 2005 by Gian Polignano
I thought you all might like to see how I referred to Mohican swimming in a recent correspondance with my group at All Star Aquatics. I'm so proud of you guys I can't help but talk about you...

One reason I've made it a priority to communicate extensively, is that I feel an excellent TEAM attitude is critical to the maximum talent development of each swimmer. This extends through all of us...coach, parent, and swimmer.

The past two summers I've had the fortune of being the head coach of Mohican Swim Team in MCSL summer league. I feel like many of the parents there are now personal friends of mine. Why has this happened?   Because we work together during the summer and put the TEAM experience ahead of everything else. I want Mohican Swimming to stand for something special. I don't let my assistant coaches sit down during practice, because I feel it sends the wrong messages to the swimmer and isn't conducive toward developing a TEAM attitude, so if you ever see me sitting during a practice, or using my cell phone, please feel free to yell at me because I deserve it!

One thing I want to emphasize to everyone, is at the 12 and under level, the most important training aspects are technique and building an strong aerobic basework for future years. I don't like to label younger swimmers "breaststrokers" "flyers" "sprinters" "distance swimmers" because it gives a a self-limiting attitude. That's why I encourage a diversity of distances and strokes at meets. One swimmer labelled themselves a "sprinter" today...its way too early to make such a determination!

It is the shared experience of training together, of pounding out yardage while enduring some physical and mental anguish, that forges the real bond among swim teammates. This powerful bond motivates athletes to succeed for the sake of their teammates. Through self-sacrifice and hard work, every individual can contribute to the improvement of the team as a whole. This goes for all of us.

A strong TEAM atmosphere can even compensate for a coaches shortcomings. I had one coach in college who always just wrote a practice up on the board, and sat down the entire practice and didn't really coach. He wasn't encouraging and even told one swimmer to "get in the **** lane" when jokingly asked if they could use fins during a hard set". Everybody pretty much despised the guy. It was the TEAM and the people in the water that kept things going and made things fun that year, despite having a bad coach. People were able to survive because they had developed strong leadership habits as an Age Grouper and in high school. Its my goal to provide both good coaching as well as teach how to have a successful TEAM attitude, so the kids can learn how to survive in this sport long-term.

Our TEAM provides consistent opportunities for the athletes to learn from one another. More often then not, the habits of successful athletes transcend the swimming pool; the same traits that are applied in the sport are displayed in the classroom, workplace (in the case of Masters swimmers), and home. Essentially becoming a 24-hour athlete means one applies winning habits to the game of life.

Some athletes on a TEAM may lead by example in constantly applying an unyielding work ethic. Other athletes may display perfect technique, positive attiudes or simply inspiration. What I want the kids to understand is that everybody in the group has something special to contribute to the learning environment.

Everything we do this year, whether it be travel to a meet or simply a social activity after a Friday practice will be done with the TEAM's collective bond in mind. These kids learn just as much from one another as they do from me.
