Former Tri-County Eagle comes HOME!!!!
GLENS FALLS -- Andrew Yole, a 2008 Glens Falls High School graduate, was one of the 62 airmen on the last U.S. military flight out of Iraq over the weekend, said his mother Mary Yole.
"That was pretty historic. I'm so happy," she said in a telephone interview on Monday.
Andrew Yole, an Air Force firefighter who had been in Iraq since October, was in Kuwait on Monday, waiting for a flight back to the United States, his mother said.
"We don't know if he is going to be in Glens Falls for Christmas, but he will be back in Tucson (at his home base), definitely," she said.
Mary Yole said she and her husband, Thomas, spoke with her son by cellphone for about 20 minutes on Sunday, after he arrived in Kuwait.
He talked about how they loaded their firetrucks onto the convoy bound for Kuwait, and then had a small ceremony with the general before the flight out of Iraq on a C-17 cargo plane.
Andrew Yole had been in Iraq with the Air Force 407th Expeditionary Group providing fire protection and training Iraqi firefighters at Imam Ali Air Base.
"He's glad to be coming home, basically. ... He said the last week was pretty rough. They were shelled on a lot. There was some insurgent fire onto the base," she said.
Andrew Yole was 13 when the Iraq War started, and he had not thought much about the military, she said.
Yole, who was named to the Foothills Council high school baseball all-star second team in 2008, had planned to become a physical education teacher, but decided to join the military after a year at SUNY Adirondack in Queensbury, Mary Yole said.
"He did a year of college and it was really expensive. So he thought he'd go into the service and come out with the post 9/11 GI Bill," she said.
Now, he is considering a career in firefighting.
The Yoles recently moved from Glens Falls to Queensbury.
