The Phoenix market is rapidly becoming an international city with a developing international trade industry, a rapidly growing diverse populous, and an increasingly coveted national and international image. As of the 2000 census, Phoenix was the 14th largest market in the US. Phoenix is projected to be the 10th largest market by 2010.
The Phoenix market is a prime opportunity for Major League Soccer to expand. Professional sports have been a fixture in the community since 1968 with the Phoenix Suns playing their inaugural season. The "Valley of the Sun" is also home to: NFL - Arizona Cardinals, 2008 Super Bowl MLB - Arizona Diamondbacks NHL - Phoenix Coyotes NCAA - Arizona State University, Fiesta Bowl, BCS Championship Series NASCAR - Two (2) annual events IRL - Annual Race event PGA - FBR Phoenix Open WNBA - Phoenix Mercury MLL - Arizona Sting AFL - Arizona Rattlers Phoenix was also chosen to host the 2005 Goodwill Games before the event was cancelled, putting it in the same league with cities like New York and Moscow.
