Ms. Fire '96 Girls White Take 2nd at State Cup

The girls ended there 2007-2008 season with a dramatic ending this past weekend.  They played with extreme toughness and should be proud of their accomplishments over the year and the weekend.  The girls started off the weekend playing Gulf Coast Blue.  The game was physical and demanding with the heat and the competition.  The girls came out with a hard fought 2-1 victory.  Parris Ladner and Beth Coleman scored goals and Beth added an assist in the effort.  The next game of the opening day had the girls battling JFC white.  The girls came out aggressive and played tough throughout.  The heat played a large part in the game.  As the girls showed their fitness training had paid off the past few weeks.  The girls dominated the pitch and grabbed a 3-0 victory.  Goals were scored by Kennedy Rose and Alixa Veal with 2.  The defense played great limiting the JFC attacking opportunities.  The last game in bracket play came on Sunday morning with a game against JFC Green.  The JFC side has been a fierce opponent for the past 2 years for the girls.  The outcomes have gone back and forth and the each team has always played tough against one another.  The fire was able to get a goal from Alixa to seal the victory in a tough 1-0 duel.  With the girls sweeping their bracket, they were able to move into the championship game against the Hattiesburg strikers.  The girls starting off brilliantly taking the momentum and building a 2-0 lead with 5 minutes remaining in the first half.  The rain and lightening moved and the game was put on hold.  With almost a 45 minute delay the strikers came back in the second half and took the momentum and tied up the game 2-2 at the end of regulation.  Goals were scored by Katelyn Watson and Beth Coleman during the regulation period with Parris and Alixa giving assists during the opening sixty minutes.   The overtime saw a game pitching back and forth.  Parris but a ball in the net and Hattiesburg equalized in the waning seconds of overtime.  In order to settle the game a PK shootout was on tap.  The girls came up short with the first five shooters for each team tying 3-3 but missed on their first sudden death PK and Hattiesburg making it.  The game was extremely close and hard for the girls to swallow, but they were able to hold up their heads and show class in congratulating the victors.  This team has been extremely tough all season and showed great ability, endurance and most of all dignity during the season.  I am proud of our girls and the way they handled an extremely tough loss.  We also want to honor Katie Pearson for her great keeping all weekend and also toughing out a fractured elbow sustained in the opening overtime of the final.  Katie finished both halves of overtime and a PK shootout in extreme pain but refused to leave the pitch in an effort to help her team.  Congratulations to the Hattiesburg Strikers in their victory and to the FIRE for showing great sportsmanship and holding your heads high!

The girls finally opened the first half of a game with a goal and took a 1-0 lead into the break, on a great shot from Alixa to beat the keeper wide to the far post before being taken out by the keeper. The Hurricanes came out in the second half strong and ready to take the championship home to Indiana. They scored two goals in the opening 8 minutes to jump to a 2-1 lead and pushed back players in hopes of holding the lead. The Fire girls kept up the pressure for the remainder of the half taking numerous shots but failing to hit the back of the net. With less than 10 minutes remaining the girls tied the game with a goal from Beth and a chance for coaches Derick and Brandon to breathe again. The Hurricanes again pushed forward in hopes of regaining the lead. With less than five minutes remaining the Hurricanes took a shot low toward the near post, Katie Pearson was able to dive and stop the shot. She immediately took the ball forward made a quick punt down the middle of the field as Lauren Marler made her run towards the opposing goal. The punt took one bounce in the penalty area were Lauren made her jump and headed the game winner over the keeper into the back of the net. The defense was able to hold on when the Hurricanes put on the pressure and pushed everyone forward in hopes for a tie. The game ended in a thrilling 3-2 victory for the girls! Congratulations to the girls for a great team effort!!! We also want to congratulate the SWISA Hurricanes for a great game and hope to see them again on the pitch. GO FIRE!

The girls held their own against some of the best teams in the country. The girls started the tournament playing D’Feeters (Texas State Champion). D’Feeters started out quick and strong out shooting the Fire 15-2 in the first half but the girls were able to hold them to a 1-0 lead at half. The second half the Fire was able to step up the defense and matched the D’Feeters 3-3 on shooting and pull to a 1-1 tie at the end of the game. The second game of the day matched the girls against the Lady Rapids (Tennessee State Champions). The girls came out string and took a 1-0 lead and held the lead till late in the second half when the Lady Rapids scored the equalizer and putting the game at another 1-1 tie. Playing not only tough competition but playing teams that play eleven aside in all their games. We all want to thank our guest players McKenzie Adams, Payton Colson and Mary Holly Lott for their great support this weekend. FALL FRIENDLIES HELP PREPARE '96 GIRLS
BUSC Friendlies
Birmingham Friendlies - Birmingham United, Germantown, Harpeth and MS Fire
This fall season the girls participated in three groups of friendlies with some great out of town/out of state talent. The girls had a great experience both on and off the field. We have been privileged to the hospitality of two out of state organizations (Little Rock Futbol Club and Birmingham United Soccer Association). The girls were also able to host a group of friendly matches at Shiloh Park in Brandon in conjunction with JFC in Jackson as well. The success of these friendly match weekends depends greatly on teams willing to travel and participate in the games as well. The participants have included Ingram Futbol Club/Arkansas; Blitz United Soccer Club/Oklahoma; Little Rock Futbol Club/Arkansas, Birmingham United/Alabama; Germantown Soccer Club/Tennessee; Harpeth Futbol Club/Tennessee; Meridian Youth Soccer/Mississippi; Jackson Futbol Club/Mississippi. We want to thank the host clubs for their hospitality in each of the events this season and want to thank all the Clubs that participated in these events. I believe these games have helped each of our clubs to gain experience on the field and allowing each of the teams in getting to meet more of the youth soccer community in the region. We look forward to building on these experiences in the coming years and continue these relationships to enhance the experiences of our young teams and grow the talent of soccer outside of the tournament environment. I am sure we will be seeing a lot more of each other on the pitch in the coming years!!!

Lauren quickly returned to form and helped the team greatly throughout the weekend. The girls started off the weekend with an early morning game against MYSO Electric from Meridian. Assisting in the game was Lauren, Kennedy and Parris added three of her own. The girls instead had a training session and a pizza party at Freedom Ridge. The team had their third match of the bracket play Sunday morning against Carrollton. The girls competed with the host club Little Rock Futbol Club, Ingram (AR) Comets and Blitz (OK) United. The games were played on the beautiful fields of Burns Park in North Little Rock. All games were 11 v 11 and the girls adapted very well to the 11 v 11 game. The first game pitted the girls against Blitz United 96 girls. The Fire controlled the action of the game from the begining and out shot the Blitz 12-5. The girls were unlucky on many shots but were able to post a 1-0 victory. The Sunday morning game had the girls playing the host club's 95 girls Blue team. The fire showed great team work and form as the held the 13's to a scoreless first half. The girls fell short in the end losing 2-0 but eveyone was impressed with the quality of play against the older more experienced team. The final game of the weekend gave the girls an opportunity to play the Ingram Comets. The girls moved the ball extremely well keeping the pressure on the offensive most of the game and were able to pack up with another victory for the weekend, finishing 5-0. Great weekend girls!
