                                 SWEET SIXTEEN !

MINUTEMEN WHITE U 17s had a great run at this year's AAU National Championships in Orlando Florida making it to the SWEET SIXTEEN in a dramatic fashion.

89 teams qualified for this prestigious event, from over  thousands of eligible squads from around the country.

Minutemen White had a great regular season in which they did well in both the Div I and Div II regionals and won 4 tournaments throughout the spring.  They came into the National Championships with over 23 wins.  In Orlando, they started against a good club from the Miami area, the Miami Pre Heat.  The game was close and MM were down 2 at half but they defended well.  Defense told the tale and Minutemen prevailed in the second half pulling away with  3 minutes left to win by 16.

Next up were the NJ Tarheels with a 6' 9" center and a deep squad.  In a tightly contested battle, the Minutemen shut out their leading scorer who had 25 in the first round but the size of the Tarheels prevailed and the Minutemen lost a close one.

It was do or die and the next round saw SEBA, a highly regarded program, duel the Minutemen for the right to move on to the Championship bracket.  the game was played on one of the showcase courts in the Milk House and numerous college coaches filled the stands.  Multiple lead changes throughout the game with great shooting by SEBA.  Minutemen go down by 8 in the fourth quarter.  Minutemen went 9 deep, offense and defense switches, down the stetch playing a suffocating man full court defense led by Jay McKay, Billy Kelly and Mark Zientek. Max Twyman, Tom Fleming and Matt Henson hit big shots. Minutemen go up 3 with less than  a minute to go. Best shooter on SEBA nails a bank shot 3 to tie.  20 seconds left, time out.  Minutemen ball, Brendan Crowley splits the defense and scores on a drive to go up 2,  Justin Nolan steals the inbound and Minutemen go on to Championship round.  The Tournament officials call it one of the best comebacks of the entire tournament.

Minutemen finish second in pool play; next up the Arsenal coming off of 3 straight wins in their pool.  Lots of size, dunking showcase style, clearly a big talented rugged team. The Minutemen are tougher and take their big men out of the game, Brendan Crowley tough at pg, Matt Henson, Max Twyman, Tom Fleming, Justin Nolan , Jay McKay and Matt Balag hit the boards big time.  The bench contributes mightily, Billy Kelly, Mark Zintek, Charles Lawrence brillant on defense.  Great contributions by Jack Jamilkowski and Mychal Coleman. Decisive win in last minute 55-45.

Next game, winner advances to Sweet Sixteen. The secondgame in the day for the Minutemen The opposition: a well rested undefeated team from Oklahoma, BARTLESVILLE BRUINS ASSOCIATION.  They are a loaded team with matching 6'6' forwards, quick guards.  Finished first in their pool and dominated in regular season winning one of the toughest tournaments in the Texas/Oklahoma area.  Minutmen go up in first half, everybody plays well, Jack Jamilkowski and Charles Lawrence lead the charge in support of the starters. Twyman, Henson, Mckay Nolan  and Fleming battle the bigs off the boards. The Bruins mount a big comeback charge and take the lead with a 3 point bank (deja vue for the Minutemen!) and go up by 1 with sixteen seconds left.  The crowd is loud on both sides.  Coach lets the Minutemen go in transition, Brendan Crowley splits the middle, again.  He's fouled with 5.2 seconds left!  He makes both, last seconds' shot by Bruins falls short against defensive pressure by Kelly, Zintek and Lawrence.  Minutemen are in the Sweet Sixteen!

Next up: Louisiana Roadrunners.  Big, quick and good shhoters, a tough competitive club who are the state Champions and have crushed their opponents in their undefeated run to the Sweet Sixteen.  They go up early, Minutemen make a charge late in second half to bring it to 8, Roadrunners open the floor and go into a delay which ends the Minutemen's impressive National Tournament run. Louisiana goes on to win the National Championship.

What a season, what a Tournament! Over a thousand teams vie to compete in the AAU National Tournament, the best show up in Orlando.  A great accomplishment to be among the SIXTEEN best teams in the country.

Congrats to the players and coaches.
