The Amoeba Defense
Have you heard of the "Amoeba Defense?"
The late Al McGuire, former coach of 1977 NCAA champion Marquette and CBS color commentator, said of Bob HugginsÂ’ Cincinnati team: "Cincinnati is really well coached. (They play the) Amoeba Defense [and] their defense is their offense."
According to highly regarded and published coach Lason Perkins: "The Amoeba Defense is similar to the 1-1-3 match up defense. The main difference is that in the Amoeba, there are different cues that have the defense changing from a zone to a man to man defense, or trapping certain areas of the court. For example, one of the basic cues of the defense is that in certain situations, the third pass made in the half court would key the defense to go man to man. You can make the defense as simple or as complicated as you wished. This would give the defense a multiple look, without having to spend lots of time teaching different defenses to your team."
The Amoeba Defense was developed and perfected by Fran Webster, a former Defensive Basketball Coach at the University of Pittsburgh. As a high school coach, Webster's teams won 70 percent of their games over a 16-year period. Although his high school record is quite impressive, it was at the college level that Webster introduced the classic "Amoeba" defense. First at Westminster (PA) College and later at the University of Pittsburgh, he spent 12 seasons refining his unique winning defensive system. Webster has received numerous awards for his coaching skills and has been inducted into five Halls of Fame.
Coach Webster has written a book explaining the Amoeba Defense. It is called

Five-Star Basketball Clinic--Princeton Style Offense
Watch Princeton or Air Force play and you can see that they are allowing their players to create. Imagine how well Michael Jordan would have done with this offense. The point of emphasis is to allow players to use their offensive skills to get a good shot. For the high school player those opportunities are created by the effective use of the backdoor cut, the ability to make lay-ups, effective jump shooting and free throw shooting, and excellent ball-handling skills.
Coach Kevin Pigott, Head Varsity Basketball Coach at Fordham Preparatory School Bronx, NY, plays in the powerful New York City Catholic High School league. In order to compete with the powerhouse New York City Catholic teams, Pigott has taught his teams the controlled half-court offensive game, called the "Princeton Style Offense." He credits much of what he does to the famous Pete Carrill, long-time Princeton coach.

Defending Baseline Out of Bounds Situations
Coaches spend considerable amounts of practice time working on offensive baseline out of bounds plays, but spend little or no time on ways to defend them. As a result, too many easy baskets are given up during the course of the game on out of bounds plays simply because teams are not prepared to stop them. "Hoop Tactics" authors coaches Ernie Woods and Bob Kloppenburg give great advice (with diagrams)on how to defend in this important situation. Check it out!
