Player Skills Checklist by Grade
This handout was first developed by a basketball club in Australia called the Greenvale Grizzlies
(www.greenvalegrizzlies.homestead.com), which was kind enough to post a draft on their website. The list has been altered to some extent and listed by grades 5-8. This chart lists the types of skills that players should be developing and a level of knowledge/proficiency that should be achieved at each grade level. This checklist is a guideline and subject to amendment. By mastering a skill, it does not necessarily mean that a player is the best he can be--it does mean, however, that the player understands what needs to be done. The ability to perform the skill will only improve will practice and experience.
On the checklist chart, the symbol "I" means "Introduce the concept," the symbol "R" means "Review the concept," and the symbol "M" means "Master the concept."

Open Post Offense
The Open-Post offense is designed to facilitate a team when you have no superior post players and take advantage of a man-to-man defense. The offense could be almost considered a guard-type offense. The design is exactly what is says, the post remains open. You have no players "in the paint". All five players are set along the perimeter. The offense is designed to played against a man-to-man defense. Also, you should keep in mind that this offense has all the elements of a motion type offense.
There are four basic rules to this offense.
Fill all five spots.
A player must fill the open spot that is closest to the ball.
Anytime you are overplayed when trying to recieve a pass, cut to the basket.
In the words of renowned coach Pete Carril, "Anytime the ball is dribbled toward you, you must cut to the basket."
The free throw line plays a key role on the Open-Post offense, it is referred to as the "Read Spot". Anytime a player makes a cut from the wing to the top of the key, the player will cut to the Read Spot and decide to pop out or cut to the basket. this essential for the offense to be run properly.

Breaking the 1-2-1-1 Diamond Zone Press
The 1-2-1-1 Diamond press, in either a half or full court variation, has traditionally been one of the strongest presses for overcoming deficits or extending a lead in a short period of time. The advantages of the 1-2-1-1 lie in being strong around the perimeter area, where double teams are easier because of the proximity of the players in the diamond to the corners and sidelines in the backcourt.
This press allows a team to dictate tempo, initiate spurts and create turnerovers. A 1-2-1-1 zone press can be an effective offensive weapon as well.
But how do you counter this pressure and break the press consistently?
Here are two diagrammed variations from Coach Gels of Coaches' Clipboard.

Basketball's Aerobic Conditioning Myth
While basketball is a running sport, the running occurs in short, powerful bursts with quick starts and stops and also involves continual jumping and landing. Distance running fails to train the Type IIa or Type IIb fibers for quick, explosive movements. Does this make a difference in conditioning training for basketball? Two very interesting articles with drills.
