Postseason tournaments: Midway teams are 6-9. The Eights(2-1) lost a heartbreaker(10-9 in extra innings) in the winners bracket final and now play in the losers bracket finals on Thursday. Majors(2-1), Bwine(0-3), Juniors(1-0), and Seniors(0-0) all play Saturday afternoon. Nines(1-2) and Tens(0-2) have been eliminated. For more details, see My Site News. Midway is hosting the District 2 9yo tournament. There are 2 teams left. Canal is undefeated and will have a rematch of the first game of the tournament vs Naamans, who defeated Suburban Wednesday night. The 'if necessary' game is on Saturday morning. Miracles happen!! The sixth-seeded Indians, winner of only one game during the entire regular season, have upset the top 3 teams to win the Minor playoffs. They beat the regular season champ Cardinals in the title game, 10-7. Congratulations to both teams for a great season, but especially to the Indians, a story that will not soon be forgotten.
In the Major playoffs, the Orioles upset the regular season champion Braves in the championship, 11-2.
Midway alum, Mark Eaton of the Pittsburgh Penguins, has won the Stanley Cup!!! Congratulations Mark!! His nephew, Jake Martin, is on the Midway Senior All-Stars.
The Braves have won their second consecutive regular season Major championship with a 15-2 record. The Cardinals won the Minor regular season title, edging out the Mets and the Pirates.
Midway was well-represented at the Pitch, Hit, & Run Sectional at Frawley Stadium on May 31. In the 9-10yo division, Brennan Hazewski finished 1st and Kevin Russo 2nd. In the 11-12yo division, Matt Buckery finished 2nd and Chris Sudimak 3rd. Brennan advanced to the next round at the Washington Nationals stadium and finished 4th.
Many Midway alumni have starred on college and high school diamonds this year. Richard O'Donald and Matt Harden at UD, Brandon Crist at DelState, Billy Crowe at Wesley, and Brandon Scott and Evan Zechman at Wilmington Univ. In high school, James Wilson led St. Mark's to the state championship and was named 3rd team All-State 3B. We're still waiting for All-Conference teams to be posted.
Midway Little League provides a baseball and T-Ball program for boys and girls ages 5-16. It has about 260 players playing 6 divisions. It features one of the finest baseball complexes in Northern Delaware with 5 fields behind Forest Oak Elementary School and the Western Family YMCA.
