Middletown Basketball leagues get a new home for hoops

The league will begin playing games this fall at the new Basketball Academy, a 58,000-square-foot facility with five full-court basketball floors, at 2401 Stanley Gault Parkway.

Being able to use the new building will help the league grow, said Scott Wesley, Middletown Recreation Association commissioner.

The league received locked-in rates for five years to use the basketball courts 46 hours a week during the fall and winter for practices and games.

Last year, the league played in six gyms and was looking for a central location.

More information is available on the league's Web site at www.mrasports.com and on the Basketball Academy's site at www.basketballacademy.org.

When are Practices? 5/6/7 year old leagues practice one night a week at Hite Elementary.  Players 8 years and older practice 1 hour per week at the Basketball Academy.  Practice night is selected by the coach.  Although practices times are offered at Basketball Academy, some coaches may use other options or sites available to them.

When are Games?Leagues have 10 regular season games with a post season single elimination tourney.  Games are on Saturday at Basketball Academy. New this year, games for the 5/6/7 year old leagues will play on Saturdays at the Basketball Academy.

When does the Season Begin?A brief tryout is held in early November for coaches to assess the player’s individual skill level, NOT to cut.  All players are selected to a team.  Practices begin late November.  Games begin early December and end by the first of March.

What about playing time?ELS (MRA) rules provide for “equal” playing time.  With 8 players on a team, every player will play a bit more than half the game.

Can I become a Coach? We are always looking for coaches.  Since we are involved with youth sports, all coaches are required to submit to a police background check.

Where are games played? All games are played at the Basketball Academy, although in some special cases and to help with scheduling, we may use other gyms to conduct games.

Special Requests Policy:ELS Policy - Player special requests ELS leagues conduct player assessment tryouts with a draft on age groups 8 year old and above.  Coaches draft teams based on their own player evaluations from tryouts.  This is done in an attempt to achieve an overall balance in the league.                                                                        Often, parents will make special requests such as playing with friends or classmates to help with carpooling etc...or not to practice on a particular night of the week.  Unfortunately, ELS cannot guarantee that all special requests will be accommodated.  ELS will disclose written special requests that it receives (via email etc....) to the age group commissioner and to its coaches prior to the draft.  ELS encourages its coaches, whenever possible, to consider the special request when drafting teams.   In reality, this can be difficult or impossible in cases when the players requesting to play together are of similar skill level.  For example, if the #1 player in the draft and the #2 player in the draft request to play together, it simply will not happen.  Understandably, the talent disparity on that team would be so great as to make it unfair to the rest of the league.   So ELS will make any special requests known to the group and hopefully things can be worked out.  If the special request cannot be accommodated, a request for a refund may be granted if made prior to uniforms being ordered.
