2007 TRI-8 CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS 23-5 overall 13-1 in conference

Congratulations to the Mustangs for having an unbelievable season. The team started off with a modest record of 3 wins and two losses, splitting two games with Sanderson and Leesville Road after defeating Randleman High School in the Impact Invitational. Little did the Mustangs know they would see both teams again deep in the playoffs. As conference play started, the boys were fired up and ready to defend the conference title that they shared in 2006. Wins over Apex, Cary and Fuquay-Varina put the team at the top of the conference at 3-0 early before dropping a spring break game at Lee County. This put the Mustangs at 3-1 in conference and 7-3 overall heading into spring break.
MCHS headed to the Johnston County Easter Tournament determined to bring a trophy back to the Creek. An easy victory over West Johnston was a good start, but an upstart Harnett Central team defeated the Mustangs on day two to end the Easter Tournament trophy hunt. Middle Creek did defeat Cardinal Gibbons in the third place game to come out of the Easter vacation with a 9-4 record. While the spring break week was a trying time for the team, something seem to happen in the CGHS game. The team started to truly come together and a joyful bus ride back to Apex helped the team realize how much fun the game and their teammates were. While the season had been successful to this point no one could image what was to follow.
Conference play started back with a nice win over Panther Creek. The next week would be daunting for the Mustangs with two games against Green Hope and a Friday night affair with Apex HS. The team defeated Green Hope 7 to 5 on Monday at home. Tuesday, the team traveled to Green Hope and defeated them 5 to 0. The Mustangs then defeated Apex at home 2-1 to finish the week at 7-1 in the conference and 1 game ahead of Lee County in the standings.
Three more conference victories led up to one of the biggest games of the year for MCHS. Lee County, the only conference team to defeat Middle Creek came to town one game behind in the standings. The winner would have the upper hand at obtaining the Tri-8 #1 seed for the playoffs. Middle Creek defeated the Yellow Jackets 5 to 0
and clinched a share of the Tri-8 Championship.
An 8-1 victory over Athens Drive and NCSU recruit Vance Williams clinched the Mustangs second Tri-8 title in two years and ensure they would be the only team to claim to be conference champions in 2007. A blowout win over Panther Creek ended the 13-1 Tri-8 campaign. The win also gave the Mustangs 20 wins on the season, making them the only 4A school in Eastern North Carolina to win 20 games.
As sweet as win the conference and getting to 20 wins is the big party was just beginning: the State Playoffs. MCHS hosted Person County in the first round and after a slow start defeated the Rockets 9 to 1. Chapel Hill then came into town but left quickly in a 5 inning 10-0 Mustang win. Familiar foe Sanderson then came to the Creek in the Sweet 16. In a well played game Middle Creek flashed great leather making all of the plays and scoring enough to take a 4-0 win. Leesville Road then visited for the right to get to the Eastern Regionals.
Middle Creek took advantage of two errors in the first and got ahead 2-0. Unfortunately a couple innings later the Mustangs returned the runs by allowing a pair of unearned runs to score. Middle Creek then back to once again take a lead, this time going up by one. Leesville scored two in the sixth and Middle Creek was unable to put another run on the board to lose 4-3 in a heartbreaking defeat.
While the defeat is still tough to take, the Mustangs should be proud of their season. A Tri-8 Conference Title is never easy to obtain as the Tri-8 is often lauded as the best 4A baseball conference in the state. A Sectional Championship and advancement to the state quarterfinals is a place that few players ever obtain. The school spirit that the students, teachers, parents, and fans felt during the run in the playoffs will not be soon forgotten. Finishing with 23 wins and only 5 losses puts the 2007 Mustang Baseball team in a special place in school history and in our hearts. Congratulations on a great baseball season Mustangs!

MIDDLE CREEK MUSTANGS-2006 CONFERENCE TRI-CHAMPIONS!!!

As is always the case in the Tri-7 Conference, the race for the conference championship came down to the last day of the season. Middle Creek put themselves in a good situation by winning their last two games of conference play this week, but had to watch how everything played out as they had a bye the last day of the season. Apex defeated Cary to guarentee at least a tie for second with the Mustangs. A few minutes later both Apex and Middle Creek found out they would be conference tri-champions with Fuquay-Varina due to Lee County's upset of the Bengals in Sanford. Congratulations to the Mustangs on sharing the championship this year.
Middle Creek finished the year with a 14-8 record. Jerrod Bornman, Bobby Fowler, Quincy Latimore, Cameron Rollins, Graham Sharpe, and Tyler Wood earned All Conference Honors. Landon Adams was named Honorable Mention All Conference. The Mustangs had 12 players on the Academic All Conference Team. Quincy Latimore won the Offensive MVP, Cameron Rollins won the Defensive MVP, and Michael Carter won the Mustang Award.
