Frequently Asked Questions 2002/2003
Q: How many tournaments will we play?
Ans: 5-7, 1-2 day tournaments plus regionals and possibly states or nationals. We hope to get 35-45 or more games overall.
Q: How many practices per week?
Ans: At least two depending on gym, player and coach availability. Prior to regionals and states 3-4 practices before each tournament.
Q: How much is the team fee?
Ans: Last year it was $300. It will probably be $350 this year and depending on what teams want to do such as more tournaments or other expenses, costs may be more. We actively seek corporate sponsorships, donations and any help we can get. The fee includes uniforms, tournament fees and admin costs for each team. Logo gym bags, hooded sweats and other accessories are an extra charge and are optional.
Q: What about playing time?
Ans: Everyone plays!!! Everyone does not play equally. Playing time is an earned commodity for working hard in practice and showing the coaches you are serious about getting better and helping your team. AAU is extremely competitive. Most games in the season are friendship games prepping for the regional in March and April and every player will play alot. Some games have a championship or a win will get you to play on Sunday and during those games we play to win with who the coaches believe can do it.
Q: How much travel will there be?
Ans: Each team usually does 2-3 away tournaments but we try to stay as local as possible. Travel expenses are the families responsibility. We may even host our own tournament this year as a fund raiser.
Q: Where are practices held?
Ans: Gym availability and cost determines practice availability. We are always looking for low to no cost gyms. Last year we practiced at local schools as well as a YMCA in the Clinton Township, Warren and St. Clair Shores area.
Q: What if I don't make a team?
Ans: It does not mean you are not a fine player and you should work hard to find a team. It is worth the effort and you will be happy later that you did. Last year, we helped players that did not make our teams find other clubs and they were very glad they made the effort.
Q: I am interested in coaching AAU? How do I get involved?
Ans: We are always looking for experienced coaches capable of coaching at the AAU level who are self starters and can get their own gyms. Contact Coach Sills if you are interested.
