Academy Teams Fall 2008
Academy teams are teams that train and compete in the small sided format in order to create incredible touch and technique, master basic tactics, and play with imagination.  Fall 2008 will have the following teams:
U10-12 Girls
U13-15 Girls
U16-U18 Girls
Notice there is a span in age on each team.  The Academy teams are selected based on skill more than age.  It is our experience that there are younger players who fit in well with other players 1-2 yrs. older.
Each Academy team will have 10-12 players.
The season includes the Fall season with 2 Winter Tournaments.
The cost will include:
  • 2 Practices a Week (During Fall)
  • 4-6 Scrimmages against Travel teams (During Fall)
  • 2 Tournaments (3v3, 5v5, or 6v6) (one around Thanksgiving, and one at the end of Januarary)
  • Uniform (2 shirts, shorts, sock)
  • 9 hours of Local Indoor Training (Coopersville) (During Winter and meeting once every other week)
  • Secondary Medical Insurance
  • Registration with US Club Soccer (allows us to play in outdoor Full-sized 8v8, 11v11 Tournaments if we decide to.)
Cost: $235/player
We believe this is a superior way to approach the Fall or Spring club soccer season for the following reasons:
  • It cuts down on driving to one game then turning around and driving back (gas prices)
  • It gives us many weekends to enjoy as families outside of soccer
  • Smaller sided training, scrimmages, and Tournaments mean more touches on the ball, more goals, more fun.
  • Opportunity to invite friends as guest players to outdoor Full-sized 8v8, 11v11 Tournaments  (Tournaments are more fun than playing a single game)
  • Proves it's emphasis on player development by including indoor training.
  • 3v3, 5v5, 6v6 training and competition better prepares our players for the 11v11 game. (those who are effective in the small sided game have the most success in the 11v11 game)
If you know you want to be a part of an Academy team, please let us know which age group you are interested in by replying by e-mail to michiganhornets@yahoo.com , or call Todd Villanueva at 616.399.3783 with specific questions.  A great way to experience this format and see if it's for you is to attend a summer camp, check the dates below.

Insights into Club's New Direction
For more details on the club's new structure and direction, click here.
Also, view this powerpoint slideshow if you are skeptical of the benefits of training in small groups and playing in small-sided tournaments versus playing 8v8, 11 v11.  The slide show starts on Slide 33.  Please view slides 33-41.  You can then continue on, or view all the slides from the beginning.
