"Discipline is caring..It's a habbit of caring. It's wanting to do things right, wanting to learn, to know more about what you are doing, wanting to look good, and give a good impression of yourself. It is the will to keep it, & giving up a few things, especially when people say, "Why?"...Until finally it is not Discipline at all, It's just what you do every day!"

The Miami Lakes Pirates 2007 Strength & Conditioning to Program

With so much at stake for a lot of these young men this Fall, The Miami Lakes Pirates Organization has taken it's program to the next level by hiring Professional Speed & Agility and Stregnth Coach Randy Smythe fulltime for the Summer.

Randy Smythe a graduate of The University of California at Berkley and Graduate school at The University of Wisconsin. Coach Smythe a Track & Football Star holds two school track records at The University of California and twice running in the NCAA Championships. Author of Acceleration, Plyometrics, Jumping Higher, and Baseball Speed Training. He was also the author of the Speed & Agility Manual for the Denver Broncos.

A proven Professional Coaching record, Dallas Cowboys, Milwaukee Brewers, Cleveland Indians, including athletes in Sao Palo, Brazil with Professional Soccer Team. US Athletes: Michael Irvin, Emmitt Smith, Troy Aikmen, Brian Urlacher, Paul Molitor, Tommy Haas, Peter Korda, and Anna Kournikova.

The Program The Pirates players will participate in includes Flexibility Session, Speed & Agility Session and Strength & Conditioning Session. It's not easy by anyway shape or form....it will take a lot out of these young men but without a doubt the best thing in the world for them....stated Coach Eddie

The players will begin at 9:00am with a 30 minute Flexibility Routine followed by 30 minutes of Speed and Agility and ending with an hour of Strength & Conditioning. "It will require a lot of heart and determination to follow this workout but it will only make them better" Coach Randy Smythe.

We look forward to seeing the end result of this program and without a doubt they will become better athletes.

Pirates Join MLB RBI Summer League

dd

The Pirates Baseball Organization is proud to announce that we have decided to join Major League Baseballs RBI League this summer. The RBI has been Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) is entering its 19th season in 2007. Since its inception in 1989, RBI has grown from a local program for boys in South Central Los Angeles to an international campaign encompassing more than 200 cities and as many as 120,000 male and female participants a year.

Major League Baseball, which has administered the RBI Program since 1991, serves as the central administrative office for RBI and, from 1993 to 1996, along with Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association (SGMA) provided start-up grants for programs demonstrating financial need. Since the inception of the program, Major League Baseball and its Clubs have designated more than $30 million worth of resources to the RBI program. Former National League President Leonard Coleman was the first Major League Baseball executive to run the RBI program. Thomas C. Brasuell, Vice President of Community Affairs for Major League Baseball, has managed the day-to-day administration of the program since 1994.

In 1993, Major League Baseball and the SGMA sponsored the inaugural RBI World Series. Hosted by the St. Louis Cardinals and the Mathews-Dickey Boys Club, a total of 378 mostly African-American and Latino youth from 12 cities participated. The Atlanta RBI teams swept the finals with the Junior Boys (ages 13 to 15) winning the John Young trophy, named for Young, and the Senior Boys (ages 16 to 18) taking home the Larry Doby Trophy, named for Doby, the first African-American to play in the American League.

The Pirates Organization is proud and honored to support this program and will become a committment for all of our teams every summer. "Baseball has brought a lot to me physically, mentally and more importantly spiritually..without a doubt I and the rest of this organization will support RBI all the way through" coach Harold

The following players have been chosen collectively by all the coaches on this staff but is not finalized at the present time.

Pirates 16's Gold Explode in the Super NIT

The Pirates Organization had a strong finish to their 2006 Season with the 14's by winning the 2006 Triple Crown - St. Augustine Fall Nationals and being ranked 10th in the State of Florida by USSSA. With that being said The Pirates had a lot of work to do in order to maintain their top elite status.

With High School baseball over we had only a month to reassemble the team and jell with the new additions...75% of this team consist of 2006 Pirates. We knew we had a great team and in many eyes better than 2006 but that was just on paper..stated coach Harold especially since they lost their only practice game to The Coral Gables Snappers.

But all that changed Saturday morning in our first game against The Evolutions 16's leadoff hitter Alejandro Diaz and 2nd batter Sebastian Gomez got on in the top of the 1st...then our 3 hitter Luis De Queseda hit a double to drive in those two runs. Everything after that was just an explosion of hits and doubles and great pitching. After a seven hour gap before our second game we now had to face the All American Prospects...a powerhouse in the 16U Division around the country. That in my opinion was the Championship Game...leaving a team like that on the field was a great feeling...coach Amed

The Pirates rolled over everyone this weekend but we committed two mistakes that cost us the Championship. And the only two errors/mental mistakes of the entire tournament, but that's what this summer is about....challenges, pressure situations, and playing the best.

"It's hard to pick standouts this time around...everyone was awesome" but if I have to say one thing was that our pitching was awesome!!! We have one of the most complete staffs around in the 16's.

Congratulations to everyone and I'm proud of everyone!!

Congratulations Coach Harold.....

Coach
With the JV High School Season over, we at the Pirates Organization would like to congratulate Coach Harold on having a great JV Season at Hialeah High.

Coach Harold who was origianly hired by Pace High School the defending 4-A in the Fall were he was Asst. JV Head Coach and soon was moved up to Varsity and became the Asst. Pitching Coach. But with Hialeah High in search of a Head JV coach it was an opportunity he couldn't pass up. Especially since Coach Harold graduated from Hialeah High.

As the Head JV Coach and the Freshman Head Coach, his season was quickly approaching and with only three weeks to get familiar with his new players he had no time to waste

Both JV's and Freshman's had so much talent that it was difficult finding positions and spots in the line-up to fit in all this talent in this short time ....stated Coach Harold. The JV team had 11 pitchers and a 26 man roster and the Freshman had 8 pitchers with a 26 man roster as well.

Both teams started off slow but they finished the season like Champions....The JV team finished the season by defeating Southridge, Killian, and Miami Springs twice. They scored 49 runs, 18 doubles, 9 triples, and over 50 hits in the last five games and finished in 1st place in the CABA JV League and above .500 in the JV High School League. The Freshman Team also started slow only to finish strong by defeating Sunset, Southridge, and Archbishop twice and making it to the semi's in the CABA League Freshman playoffs. The pitching was excellent and without a doubt our strong point.

"It was an amazing season for me personally and professionally...I'm really happy of the accomplishments this season and very proud of the JV and Freshman" stated coach Harold.

Coach Harold is now embarking on another goal...my coaching job doesn't end in the Spring..stated coach Harold. Although he bleeds Blue he invited his old Pirates players along with his JV & Freshman teams to create two JV  & Freshman teams. They will compete at the highest level of baseball this season. Coach Harold will also be working at Killian High School this summer in their Summer Baseball camps.

The entire Pirates family would like to congratulate Coach Harold and wish him the best this summer and in the future.

This past Wednesday’s bullpen session was the best I have seen from the group that showed up - David Martinez, Eddie Vaca, Jeff Rehonic, Javi Toledo, Joel Colon & Johnny Toledo. I especially noticed that everyone was paying attention while waiting for their turn to throw. Sometimes you think that a good day is based on your performance but that is not the case -- Attitude and commitment is the key to success.

Everyone had great mechanics, control and explosion to the plate.  Some of you paid good attention and finally learned how throw the curve. I was extremely ecstatic about that.

I was very upset with the incident that occurred off the field. That really derailed the enthusiasm and fire going on in the bullpen. Let’s hope it does not happen again!!!

Finally, it was a great workout and I applaud the time and effort put in by the group that evening. I hope you take the same concentration and devotion into your games and perform like you know how.

Remember my Motto “DON’T BE AFRAID!!!”

13U Pirates Rebound from Last Weekend and Split another Double Header with Boca Bombers...

FPBL Logo

The Pirates rebounded this weekend from a not so stellar performance last week when they dropped a game to the First Place Tigers 9 - 1... Walks & Defensive breakdowns hurt the cause.

This past weekend the Pirates faced the Boca Bombers traveling north to Boca Raton -- and they split a Double Header beating the Bombers 5 - 2 in the opener and lost the night game 7 - 4 in the last inning.

In the opening game, the Pirates jumped to an early lead behind some timely hitting. The Pirates offensive was produced by Jeff Rehnoic (2 for 3, 1 RBI); David Martinez (1 for 2, BB & 2 RBI's); Tyler Sanchez (1 for 3 , RBI) and Marky Gutierrez with (3 Stolen Bases & 2 runs scored).

The 5 runs was all the lead that Winning Pitcher David Martinez would need this afternoon, as he was sharp through 5 innings before giving way to Zachary Gonzalez who got the Save by closing out the 6th inning. David allowed 1 Run on 2 hits, 2BB, with 3K's , kept the Bombers guessing & yielded 11 groundouts.

Defense was mostly solid behind good plays from Johnny Toledo, Tyler Sanchez, Eddie Vaca, Marky Gutierrez...

In Game 2 -- The Pirates once again jump to a quick lead -- with 4 runs in the 1st inning capitalizing on 3 walks, RBI Single by Dennis Stevenson and a FC RBI by Tyler Sanchez.
However, the Pirates bats went cold with Runners in Scoring Position -- stranding 4 runners and grounding out - on 7 out of the last 10 plate appearances.

Our Pitching was lead by Jeff Rehnoic who had a Strong outing -- pitching 5 innings giving up 2 unearned runs on 1 hit before turning it over to our Fireballer Closer Dennis Stevenson.  Unfortunately, Dennis ran into some trouble by walking 4 batters on a spotty strike zone.  Lefty Eddie Vaca came with base loaded and retired the two batters he faced getting a grounder and fly out to close out the inning.  The Pirates had a chance to tie the scored in their bottom half of the 6th - however they could bring them home.

Overall, the Pirates had an improved and solid performance over the prior week… however; they need to continue to work hard on performing consistently week over week.  Once the Young Pirates are able to put it all together, Hitting, Defense behind solid pitching – they will be on Top week in week out.
Keep up the Hard Work!!!

The 13U Pirates Young Pitching Staff is coming along nicely...

Flaming Baseball

In case you have not noticed -- the Pirates 13U Pitching Staff has been progressing nicely and developing in to their skin.  “Pirates Pitching Coach Jorge Correa has done a great job on working with our boys and making consistent progress” - said Coach Eddie.  If we look back just to this past spring /summer season -- you can see a 180-degree improvement…

Starters David Martinez, Jeff Rehnoic and Zachary Gonzalez, Tyler Sanchez – are now having solid outings on a consistent basis -- well enough to win games or turning it over to the closers with a lead.

Equally impressive has been the development of our New Starters Lefty Eddie Vaca, Righty Closer Dennis Stevenson.

Coach Jorge is working on further improving the staff and focusing on developing additional pitchers like: Andre Fernandez, Joel Colon, Javier Toledo, Marky Gutierrez and Anthony Guerra.

The Pirates have a long road ahead in their training to become seasoned pitchers capable of competing and making their High School squad.

Coach Harold says -
"I have every confidence in the world that Coach Correa will get this young team to develop like we did with our older boys -- judging by the results... it all paid off. "

"My only advice to our pitching staff is to remember that like everything else in life - you get out of it what you put in" - stated Coach Eddie.

Pirates Play Hard and Earn Respect in Perfect Game/BCS 15U Showcase

"Don't you think we're in over our heads with this tournament?" this is what I was asked one day before the tournament started and for those that aren't aware what we were facing....The East Cobb Astros from Georgia had 500 players tryout for their team, Dallas Tigers was a Semi-Finalist Jr. Olympic Team and NorCal Red Soxs were a top 5 finisher in the West Coast Perfect Game Finals Tournament.

The Pirates showed us and everyone else that they are not afraid of facing anyone anywhere and they proved that this past week.

The first game was against the Miami White Soxs a team currently ranked 6th in the State as a result of good showings in the USSSA ELITE Finals and Triple Crown. Pirates Hurler Danny Sanchez allowed two runs in the first inning and then shut the door down on the White Soxs, pitching a great game and getting out of jams when needed. The Defense was great and led by Sebastian Gomez and Adrian English, they turned 5 double plays in that game to keep their pitcher in the game. The offense was led by Chris Gutierrez, Frank Bradham, Adrian English, Nick Castellano and Oscar Romero. Ralph ruiz closed the door in the 7th inning with a 3-2 lead and men on 1st and 2nd....and conserving the win.

The second game was against the Dallas Tigers, a line-up that had an average height of 6ft and powerful as heck. The young boys battled but the 6 run first inning in the rain and the 6 other runs were to much to come back from. They had a no hitter going until Sebastian Gomez hit a single between SS and 3B.

Game Three was the best game these boys have ever played..facing NorCal Red Soxs. Johhny Caballero pitched another Gem facing what ANYONE would call a Varsity Line-up. He was masterful controlling the hitters by mixing in his curveball, cutter, change-up and fastball. Johhny left his heart and soul on that mound that day and I was so proud of him...like I told him in the 6th inning when I had to pull him.."No matter what happens, no one can take away what you did here today, you did a beautiful job" The defense was also great and led by Ralph Ruiz - C and Sebastian Gomez - 2B...The offense was led by David Vazquez who scored on a head first slide at home and by Frank Bradham who doubled and scored in the 7th to keep the game going...these boys fought hard without a doubt in my mind...

As a NorCal Parent Said "the 6-2 score doesn't even reflect how close this game really was, you have great kids and great players, you have done a wonderful job with them..keep playing them up!!" that players is called RESPECT!!! thats worth more than a win!!..Coach Harold

Kevin Hernandez & Danny Sanchez Show Hard Work Always Pays Off........

Danny

Although Kevin Hernandez had to play for his school (Mater Academy) against us this past Saturday, it was great to see how much his hard work this summer is beginning to pay off for him....even though it was against his team "THE PIRATES"

Kevin was great at the plate today against us, he used the entire field during all his at-bats and showed great improvement behind the plate. Kevin has been working out at American High with Rudy Pena and is currently entering his 3rd week.

Danny Sanchez who has been a great asest to this team as a pitcher is beginning to show us that he can also play the field like an all-star and hit like it as well. Danny was brilliant today on the mound and batting. Danny was hitting line drives and was hitting the ball hard. Danny as well is working out with Rudy Pena at American High School.

"Rudy runs the best camp around...this is a true camp" stated Kevin and Danny...2 1/2 hours of hitting, 2 1/2 of conditioning and field work. It's grueling work and only top notch prospects workout at his camp...stated both players.

Danny and Kevin are a prime example that just because it's summer you don't have to just sit back and lounge...their hard work is showing and will shine once High School Fall Ball begins....

Great Job Kevin and Danny....I'm proud of both of you and your dedication....

Sebastian Gomez....Varsity Surprise

Sebastian Gomez

Pirates SS Sebastian Gomez started the season with his JV team at Dade Christian and after posting monster numbers and the Varsity in need of consistency in the middle infield and at the top of the line-up; he was called to to take on the challenge. As a faculty staff stated: "We sure are proud of our 8th grader"

With Sebastian only being an 8th grader he still has a lot more time to mature. And we can't but wait to see what he does as a Senior.

Sebastian batted over .500 as the 2 slot hitter and went 9-11 at The Lakes Placid High School Tournament; and was named to the 2006 Lake Placid - All Tournament Team.

The entire Pirates family is proud of Sebastian and congratulate him and wish him continued success.

12U Continue to Develop.....

12U

The Miami Lakes Pirates 12U team continues to grow and learn in their first season in travel baseball; the team continues to show a lot of promise with a lot of young raw talent.

These are the players you want in my opinion stated coach Harold. Not to many coaches in travel like to develop talent but these are the players that always shine because they are very coachable.

The team continues to strive to improve it's roster and to make a name for it self in the 12U division and is also in search of going to Cooperstown.

Continue success....12U Pirates

Once again Danny Sanchez has proven that he is the man to call on when you need to secure a win. Danny Sanchez who played this Spring at Archbishop McCarthy is a talented young man with great smarts and a great arm.

Danny gave up 2 earned runs at the beginning but he did not lose his composure and controlled his emotions. Danny then mowed down the Storm hitter by hitter and did not give up anymore runs and limited hits.

Great Job Danny....keep up the good work....coach Harold

14's Starters End March with 0.33 ERA.....

Fransico Garcia

The 14's pitching staff has done a great job this season, and the last two weeks of March weren't any different. They have done a great job of pitching this season and keeping us in the hunt for the playoffs.

          Starters: Chris Gutierrez
                        Chris Ross
                        Johnny Caballero
                        Danny Sanchez
                        Frank Bradham
                        Francisco Garcia

           Closers: Raymond Chirino
                        Johnny Mieses

The staff pitched well throughout the last weeks of the month of March, posting a 5-1 record and keeping the ERA under 1.00. It's very nice to have the quality of pitchers we have and not to mention having two closers (lefty & righty) that have reached 80 mph on their fastballs.

We have two games left against Braddock High School before the playoffs begin, this is were we need the staff to shine. I'm sure that they will do fine, they are in good shape and are well prepared to compete at the Freshman level......stated coach Harold

Keep checking back....this young staff is out to make some noise......

David Vazquez

Our Defense is something to talk about.........we have the best if not one of the best middle infield around.

With David Vazquez SS, Sebastian Gomez SS & Adrian English 2B, we have one of the best double play combination around. With Sebastian Gomez playing Varsity at Dade Christian the Pirates haven't missed a beat in the middle infield. David is a great shortstop and will make a lot of noise at the High School level....it's not everyday a coach can have two studs at shortstop.....Adrian English has been solid at 2B, his ability to be able to adjust to David and Sebastian who are two totally different players at shortstop has sure been a treat to see.....Adrian, David and Sebastian will make some noise at PACE High School.....

Great job guys.......

Rudy Pena becomes Miami Lakes Pirates Catching Instructor......

Rudy Pena
Rudy Pena - Catcher
The Pirates are proud to have Rudy Pena training the catchers on our teams. We have three solid catchers on this team all who once again will catch at the High School level.

Rudy Pena a Dominican Baseball player played his minor league career for the Pittsburgh Pirates organization and is a local High School coach at American High School. Rudy is already well known in Miami Lakes, he trains many local High School players...Pace, Dade Christian, Hialeah High, American, Heritage and many more.

His knowledge of the game, his experience behind the plate and his knowledge in catching is what makes him a great instructor.

His instructions have already showed, starting catcher Oscar Romero threw out 5 runners in one game after three lessons with Rudy!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thursday, April 6
Gus Gandarillas becomes Miami Lakes Pirates Baseball Pitching Coach......

Gus Gandarillas
The Pirates family are proud to welcome Gus Gandarillas as the pitching coach, we're very happy to have Gus work with our pitchers.....Gus Gandarillas played his baseball career in Miami, played for the University of Miami and pitched for the Milwaukee Brewers.

Gus will bring a lot to this pitching staff, he will be able to get these kids ready for the next step...High School Baseball and 13U Travel.

I feel that every pitcher on this staff will pitch at the High School level, stated coach Harold.

His knowledge of the game and his skills in working with young players will be a great benefit to our staff, we sure are looking forward to the summer.....

14's 2-0 Over Weekend.........

Raymond Chirino
The Pirates 14's defeat Miami High & Homestead over the weekend and are preparing for the playoffs that begin April 19th.

The Pirates started the weekend by playing against Miami Freshman on Thursday night, defeating them 7-1. Starter Chris Gutierrez pitched 3 shutout innings, middle reliever Fransico Garcia did his job in the 4th and 5th only giving up 1 run and then Raymond Chirino closed the game. The pitching was outstanding as always......and Raymond was lights out!!!!!

Saturday the Pirates defeated Homestead 10-6. Starter Johnny Mieses had a no hitter going till the 3rd inning, Johnny did a great job today....we were short on pitching today and Johnny who normally is a closer took the hill to help the team out; then Chris Ross closed the game maintaining the victory.

Offensively we are hitting the ball when we need to....we are getting timely hitting from everyone in the line-up. 1-10 everyone is contributing and that is what makes this team so special.....

Pirates defeat Varela High School 4-0

14-under Pirates pitching staff pitched a 2 hit shutout against Varela High School.....The Pirates pass their first test of the season in the Freshman division by defeating Varela High School - Freshman team.

The pitching staff was outstanding tonight....Johnny Caballero went 4 innings, 4 k's, 0 BB, 2 hits with a 48 pitch count. He did a wonderful job of controlling Varela's offense, Johnny has matured into a wonderful pitcher and a young man. Fransico (Franchize) Garcia came in the 5 inning and closed the game out once again going 2 innings, 2 k's, 0 BB, 0 Hits with a 28 pitch count, Fransico has done a wonderful job for us. He has closed three games so far and is 0-0 with 3 saves and an  era of 0.00. With Johnny Caballero, Chris Gutierrez, Chris Ross, Fransico Garcia, and Johnny Mieses we have one of the best 5 man rotation around....Great job tonight pitchers....

Our defense was great tonight once again....we have converted over 24 double plays this season with Sebastian Gomez SS, David (Chiqui) Vazquez SS/3B and Adrian english 2B we have one of the best middle infield around. David and Adrian were great tonight, it's like they have their own language out there i enjoy watching those three playing the middle infield. But our entire infield has to thank our first basemen, with Raymond Chirino and Chris (Gut) Gutierrez at 1B our infielders aren't afraid to throw anything their way. Tonight was no exception....Ray and Gut were outstanding tonight, they did some great picks tonight making the outs every time. As an ex-infielder having a 1B that can scoop anything you throw at them sure makes your life as an infielder a lot easier, Our catchers did a great job of keeping the running game under control, Kevin Hernandez did a great job of blocking balls and with his vocal presence on the field, Johnny Mieses did a great job as well...in the 4th inning with 1 out runner on 1B and a 3-2 count...Johnny Caballero struck out the batter and Johnny Mieses threw a bullet on the attempt steal. His throw was sick, because not only did the hitter step on the plate to obstruct his view but his throw beat the runner by 4 steps.....pretty sick.....with Oscar Romero, Kevin Hernandez, & Johnny Mieses we aren't going to see to many steal attempts......Great job.

Our offense was unusally quiet tonight but you have to give credit were credit is due. The varela coaching staff did a great job of calling great pitches and changed their pitchers 4 times keeping us off balance. But you can't keep us down for that long....in the 4th inning we broke it open with a double from Adrian english with 2 runners on and getting 2 RBI's, Keven Hernandez also doubled tonight with an RBI. We didn't hit our normal long ball tonight but we had timely hitting and great 2 strike hitting we only had 3 k's tonight out of 18 outs....we did enough tonight to get the win, but thats because we played as a team....when our top of the line up isn't hitting our bottom of the line-up picks up.....great job...

Great job guys...i'm proud of everyone on this team, lets keep up the good work and keep working hard...Coach Harold
