OVERVIEW OF COLLEGIATE WRESTLING RULES
The object of the sport of wrestling is to put your opponent on his back, so that both shoulders or shoulder blades are touching the mat at once - this is called a "pin," or "fall," and is an automatic win. If nobody gets pinned, the winner is the wrestler who is ahead in points after the end of the match.

A match consists of 3 one-minute rounds. If the score is tied at the end of round 3, there is a 30-second overtime round, with both wrestlers starting on their feet. If the score is still tied after this round, there is a final 30-second round with one wrestler starting up and one starting down (the classic "referee's" starting position). The wrestler on the bottom must escape or score to win - the wrestler on top must simply maintain control, or "ride" the other wrestler for the 30 seconds.

Individual (Match) Scoring:.

1.) Takedown - (2 pts.) - the scoring wrestler must take the other to the mat, and control him.
2.) Escape - (1 pt.) - the scoring wrestler must move from a "controlled" position, to a "neutral" position.
3.) Reversal - (2 pts.) - the scoring wrestler must move from a "controlled" position, to a "controlling" position.
4.) Nearfall - (2 or 3 pts.) - (also called "back points") - the scoring wrestler must hold the other wrestler so that both shoulder blades are within 4 inches of the mat, or one shoulder is on the mat and the other is within a 45-degree angle to the mat. If a nearfall last for 2 seconds, you get 2 points - if it lasts for 5 seconds, you get 3 points.
5.) Penalty Points - (1 pt. for your opponent) - your opponent gets one point when you commit one of the following:
a.) - Illegal hold - (Note: A referee might stop the match for a "potentially dangerous" hold - this is not necessarily an illegal hold, and points may or may not be awarded.)
b.) - Technical Violation - (leaving the mat, grabbing headgear, incorrect starting position - you will get a caution or two before the referee enforces this one, locking your hands on your opponent if you are on top and NOT in a pinning position, or stalling - you will get 1 or 2 cautions 1st.)
c.) - Unsportsmanlike Conduct - (If conduct is too bad, the referee will stop the match and the offender will forfeit.)

Team (Dual Meet or Tournament) Scoring:

1.) Pin (or Fall) - 6 Team Points.
2.) Forfeit - 6 Team Points.
3.) Disqualification - 6 Team Points.
4.) Technical Fall - 5 Team Points. (A Technical Fall is declared when one wrestler gets a lead of 15 or more points.)
5.) Decision - 3 Team Points. (A Decision is declared when one wrestler wins by 1 - 14 points.)
