HARPER, RELAYS SET NEW SCHOOL RECORDS AT NIKE NATIONALS

Jason Harper jumped a new school record 46 feet, 6.75 inches Friday at the Nike Outdoor Nationals at North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, N.C.  He placed 14th overall.

 The boys 400-meter relay of Dwayne Mason, Dawan Smith, Jalil Davis and Devon Sivels placed runner-up in the Emerging Elite class with a 42.98. They had set a school record earlier in the day with a 42.91 in the prelims.

The boys 800-meter relay of Davis, Sivels, Michael Johnson and Smith ran a school record 1:29.80 to place runner-up in the Emerging Elite division as well. 

Smith placed 4th in his heat in the 200 with a 23.02 and 4th in his heat in the 400 with a 50.44

SMITH SPRINTS WAY TO FIRST-TEAM ALL-STATE AT MEET OF CHAMPS

Congratulations to sophomore Dawan Smith who won the 400 meters in a new Bloom record of 49.22 seconds to earn First-team All-state at the Meet of Champions in Dover Wednesday night. Smith also set a new school record in the 200 meters in 22.17 and anchored the 1600-meter relay, along with Dalton Talley, Michael Johnson and Bremante Parker, to a new school record of 3:25.16.

Kari Elzey threw over 100 feet for the first time in discus, while senior Nathan Simpson closed out his stellar four-year career with a season-best 12 foot 6 inches in pole vault to finish runner-up.

The 400-meter relay of Bryan Pettyjohn, Dwayne Mason, Jalil Davis and Devon Sivels ran a season-best 43.43, while Shayla Dukes added a personal best in long jump. The boys 3200-meter relay of Jordan Showell, Patrick Helmick, Erik Gibbs and Michael Johnson also placed third.

Pole vaulters Nick Albert, Chris Pink, Miranda Spina, the boys 800-meter relay, girls 400 and 800 relays, Jason Harper and Katlin Town also competed well.

BOYS TAKE HOME STATE TITLE; GIRLS RALLY FOR FOURTH

4x400 STATE CHAMPS

Congratulations to the Milford High boys track & field team for winning the 2009 Division II state title Saturday at Caesar Rodney with 92 points. The girls finished a strong fourth overall, led by Miranda Spina who set a new school record of 9'0" to win the pole vault title.

Dalton Talley, Michael Johnson, Bremante Parker and Dawan Smith closed out the day by setting a new school record and winning the 1600-meter relay. The 400-meter relay of Bryan Pettyjohn, Dwayne Mason, Jalil Davis and Devon Sivels and the 800-meter relay of Davis, Sivels, Johnson and Smith won titles earlier in the day. Smith also claimed the team's lone individual state title in the 200 meters.

The 3200-meter relay of Jordan Showell, Patrick Helmick, Erik Gibbs and Johnson set a school record in placing third on Friday.

BOYS FINISH RUNNER-UP, GIRLS THIRD AT CONFERENCE

Dawan Smith won the 200 and 400 meters in a new Bloom record time of 49.88 to pace the boys to a runner-up finish in the Henlopen Championships Saturday at Lake Forest. The boys scored 109 points to CR's 134. Meanwhile, the girls put together a great team effort to finish third overall behind CR and Cape.

 Other MHS individual Henlopen champions included Nick Albert, who set a new school record of 13'4" in pole vault, Jason Harper in triple jump and Shayla Dukes in high jump. Jordan Showell, Patrick Helmick, Erik Gibbs and Michael Johnson ran a school-record time of 8 minutes, 14 seconds to win the 3200-meter relay on Friday. Their time also ranks as the sixth fastest time ever run at the meet.

Jason Harper also tied a Bloom record of 6'0" to place third in high jump. Molly Bliss qualified for states in the 800 meters, while Miranda Spina added a provisionally qualifier in 300 hurdles. Katlin Town placed runner-up in high jump and scored her career-best jumps in long and triple.

BOYS 3200 RELAY SMASHES RECORD TO HIGHLIGHT HENLOPEN FIRST DAY

Jordan Showell, Patrick Helmick, Erik Gibbs and Michael Johnson ran a school-record time of 8 minutes, 14 seconds to win the 3200-meter relay Friday in the first day of the Henlopen Championship at Lake Forest. Their time also ranks as the sixth fastest time ever run at the meet.

Jason Harper also tied a Bloom record of 6'0" to place in high jump, while Devon Sivels, Dwayne Mason, Bryan Pettyjohn and Dawan Smith advanced to the finals in the sprint events. Justin Arseneau placed fifth in shot put.

For the girls, Molly Bliss, Ziondra Russ, Tori Cox and Jessica Griffith crushed their season-best time to place third in the 3200 relay, while Kira Robinson advanced to the finals in the 100. Miranda Spina and Kim Richardson scored their career-best vaults to place in pole vault, while Shayla Dukes and Katlin Town recorded their career jumps in long jump.



Monday, May 4
BUCS WRAP UP 2ND STRAIGHT 20+ WIN REGULAR SEASON

With regular-season wins in their regular-season finale at home Monday, the Bucs combined for 20 victories for the second-straight season. The boys finished 11-1 overall, while the girls ended 9-3.

Steve Eshleman ran personal bests in both the 1600 and 3200 meters to qualify provisionally for the boys, while Bryan Pettyjohn, Dawan Smith, Devon Sivels, Jason Harper, Chris Pink, Justin Arseneau and Dalton Talley scored individual wins.

For the girls, Kira Robinson won the 100, while Miranda Spina again matched her school record to win pole vault. The 3200- and 800-meter relays ran their fastest times of the season.

Friday, May 1
BOYS, GIRLS CLINCH SOUTH TITLE WITH HOME WINS AGAINST LAKE FOREST

The boys and girls swept away three of four relays to clinch the 2009 Henlopen Conference Southern Division title with wins over Lake Forest Friday. The boys improve to 9-1 on the season, while the girls are now 8-2.

For the girls, Molly Bliss, Jessica Griffith, Ziondra Russ and Shayla Dukes each won an individual event and help winning relays, while Miranda Spina added a win in pole vault. On the boys side, Jason Harper won the long and triple jump, and Erik Gibbs, Patrick Helmick and Steve Eshelman helped sweep away the distance events. Justin Arseneau also tossed a career-best to win shot put. The boys also scored three relay wins, while Dawan Smith won the 400 and Nick Albert and Chris Pink led pole vault.

Rossiny Beaucejour qualified for states in 110 hurdles, and Kari Elzey tossed career-best marks in shot and discus.

BUCS BOUNCE BACK ON WARM DAY AT HOME

Bryan Pettyjohn, Jason Harper and Shayla Dukes each scored over 40 points a piece to lead the boys and girls track teams to a sweep of St. Thomas More, Laurel and Sussex Central Tuesday.

Dalton Talley qualified for states in the 400 meters, while Molly Bliss and Miles Russell scored provisional qualifiers in the event. Mike Johnson (800), Jason Harper (100) and Ziondra Russ (100) added provisional times as well. The boys move to 7-1 on the season while the girls are now 6-2.

BUCS WRAP UP COMPETITIVE PENN RELAYS

Ziondra Russ, Kira Robinson, Shekinah Brown and Shayla Dukes scored the team's fastest time of the season (4:23.50) in the 1600-meter relay to highlight a solid showing at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia.

Joycelynn Johnson, Robinson, Brown and Dukes also ran a 53.34 in the 400-meter relay.

For the boys, Jalil Davis, Dawan Smith, Dwayne Mason and Devon Sivels ran a 44.29 in the 400 relay, while Miles Russell, Michael Johnson, Clarence Cartwright and Smith ran a 3:39.72 in the 4x4.



Tuesday, April 21
BOYS GET EDGED OUT BY CR; BOTH TEAMS TOPPLE SMYRNA

In an extremely close meet Tuesday, Dawan Smith led the way for the boys with wins in the 200, 400 and 1600-meter relay. Bryan Pettyjohn won high jump and helped the 400-meter relay to wins, while Jason Harper won triple jump and Justin Arseneau swept away the shot put and discus. For the girls, Kira Robinson won the 100, Katlin Town won high jump and Kari Elzey discus.

The bucs qualified Erik Gibbs (1600), Jordan Showell (800), Mike Johnson (400), Bremante Parker (400), Shayla Dukes (300 hurdles) and Katlin Town (high jump) for states, while Rossiny Beaucejour reached provisional qualification in both hurdles.

GIRLS, BOYS TEAM UP TO VAULT PAST COMPETITION AT CAPE CO-EDS

The girls and boys teamed up to win the Cape Henlopen Co-ed Relays Saturday. Miranda Spina (8'6") set a new school record in pole vault, and Chris Pink later tied the boys mark with a 13'0" as the duo took first to cap a strong day for the Bucs.

The  400-meter relay of Bryan Pettyjohn, Shayla Dukes, Dwayne Mason and Kira Robinson scored gold as did the long jump duo of Dukes and Jalil Davis. Justin Arseneau tossed a 44'0" in shot put to earn bronze with Kyien Young.

Other medal winners included:

2nd place: 800 relay of Jalil Davis, Shekinah Brown, Dalton Talley, Kira Robinson; Jason Harper-Katlin Town (high jump); Rossiny Beaucejour-Katlin Town (triple jump), Kari Elzey-Jon Jones (discus).

3rd place: 3200 relay of Ziondra Russ, Erik Gibbs, Tori Cox, Chris Pink; Jason Harper-Katlin Town (long jump), Kyien Young-Justin Arseneau (discus).

NICE WEATHER INSPIRES BUCS TO DO SPRING CLEANING AT TWILIGHT RELAYS

The boys and girls each won Section II championship at the Twilight Relays Friday at Caravel Academy. The boys won four field events and five track relays, while the girls won three field events.  Bremante Parker, Dalton Talley, Dwayne Mason and Dawan Smith finished the night by setting a new school record of 3:25.37 in the 1600-meter relay.

BOYS BRIGHTEN RAINY, COLD DAY AT BURGESS INVITATIONAL WITH TROPHY

The 3200-meter relay of Jordan Showell, Patrick Helmick, Erik Gibbs and Michael Johnson scored gold in a new Bloom record time of 8:28, Jason Harper won high jump, and Dawan Smith won the 400 meters and helped the 400-meter relay to victory as the boys finished runner-up to CR on a windy, rainy, cold Saturday at Lake Forest at the Keith S. Burgess Invitational. Kira Robinson ran her best times of the season, finishing second in the 100 and third in the 200 to lead the girls to a fifth-place team finish.

Pole vault, long jump and triple jump were not contested due to weather. Meanwhile, Harper (high jump) and Patrick Helmick (800) qualified for states, while Clarence Cartwright (300M hurdles), Michael Johnson (400) and Jordan Showell (800) earned provisional qualifiers.

BOYS START 2-0; GIRLS SPLIT VS. DOVER, POLY

Devon Sivels and Kira Robinson ran state-qualifying time to win the 100 and 200 to help the boys and girls to victories on Tuesday. The boys topped Dover, 102-44, and Polytech, 121-25, while the girls topped Poly, 102-42, and dropped a tough one to Dover, 89-52.

Jason Harper won the triple and high jump and led the Bucs with 26 points, while Shayla Dukes won the 300 hurdles and high jump, qualifed for states in the long jump and add 29.25 points. Dwayne Mason added state qualification in the 100 and 200, while Jalil Davis (200), Dawan Smith (400), Dalton Talley (300 hurdles), Bryan Pettyjohn (110 hurdles) and Kim Richardson (pole vault) also qualified. Brandon Legrand (100, 200), Derrick Strickland (shot put), Davis (long jump) and Talley (110 hurdles) added provisional qualifiers.

Congratulations to the boys track team who claimed the Henlopen Conference Indoor Championship Wednesday at Snow Hill. The girls finished 5th overall.

Individual champions included Nick Albert, who set a new school indoor record of 12-feet, 6 inches in pole vault; Bryan Pettyjohn in high jump and Kira Robinson in 55 meters.

Relay champions included the girls 3200-meter relay team of Molly Bliss, Jessica Griffith, Alli Henderson and Tori Cox and the boys' 800-meter relay of Dawan Smith, Dalton Talley, Devon Sivels and Mike Johnson.

Runner-ups included Devon Sivels (55 meters), Dawan Smith (400 meters) and the boys 1600-meter relay of Mike Johnson, Devon Sivels, Clarence Cartwright and Dawan Smith.

SENIOR RUNNER WINS 400 AT MEET OF CHAMPS

Senior Shayla Wilson capped her MHS track career with a win in the 400 meters at the Meet of Champs at Dover Wednesday night. She earns first-team All-state honors for the victory. Meanwhile, senior Tony Cowart got edged to runner-up in both the 400 and 200 meters, and he placed fourth in the 100.

Nick Albert (4th) and Chris Pink (6th) placed in pole vault, while the 400-meter relay of Dwayne Mason, Dawan Smith, Jalil Davis and Devon Sivels placed fifth as did Kayla Boone in 100-meter hurdles. The girls 400 relay of Shelby Letthand, Kira Robinson, Shellisha Letthand and Latifah Davis placed 8th.

WILSON LEADS WAY IN STATES

Senior Shayla Wilson claimed individual state titles in the 400 and 200 meters, helping the girls to a fourth-place finish overall in the Division II state meet Saturday at Caesar Rodney. Miranda Spina also finished runner-up in pole vault, while Shelby and Shellisha Letthand broke the school record in triple jump.

For the boys, Antonio Cowart finished runner-up in the 200 and 400, helping the guys to a third-place finish overall.

BOYS EDGE OUT CR FOR HENLOPEN MEET TITLE; GIRLS SET NUMEROUS RECORDS

Aaron Pettyjohn, Michael Johnson, Eddress Smith and Tony Cowart nailed down a win in the 1600-meter relay and Nate Simpson, Nick Albert and Chris Pink swept pole vault as the boys secured a 107-104 victory over CR to clinch the Henlopen Conference meet championship Saturday at Lake Forest.

 Meanwhile, Shayla Wilson won the 200 and 400-meter titles, and the girls set or tied three school records en route to a fourth-place finish overall. School records included Shayla Dukes (5'1" high jump), Shelby Letthand (33'9" triple jump), Miranda Spina (8' pole vault) and Kayla Boone (15.8 100M hurdles).

BOYS SWEEP AWAY 12-0 HENLOPEN CHAMPIONSHIP WITH WINS VS. CAPE, TECH

The boys knocked off Sussex Tech and Cape Henlopen Tuesday to complete an undefeated 12-0 regular season en route to their first Henlopen Conference championship since 1986. Meanwhile, the girls downed Sussex Tech and slipped to Cape to finish 10-2 overall.

To highlight the day, Shayla Dukes matched a school record in high jump with a 4'10" while Jordan Showell set a new Bloom record in the 800 meters with a 2:04.4. Latifah Davis (400), Jason Harper (high jump), Michael Johnson (800), James Baynard (discus), Ali Henderson (400) and Mike Whaley (400) each qualified for states, while Rossiny Beaucejour (110 hurdles), Bremante Parker (400) and Travis White (800) each added provisional qualifiers.

BOYS, GIRLS STAY ON WINNING TRACK AT SEAFORD; WRAP UP THE SOUTH

Seniors Aaron Pettyjohn and Kayla Boone each scored a pair or individual wins and helped winning relays to propel the boys and girls to victories over Seaford on Thursday to secure at least a Southern Division title this season. The boys improve to 10-0 overall, while the girls are now 9-1.

Shellisha Letthand added a state qualifier in 300-meter hurdles.

BOYS SET FAST TIMES AT PENNS

Aaron Pettyjohn, Dawan Smith, Eddress Smith and Tony Cowart set a new Bloom record time of 3:28.59 in the 1600-meter relay to score a nice performance at the Penn Relays Carnival in Philadelphia Saturday.

On Friday, Devon Sivels, Tony Cowart, Jalil Davis and Dawan Smith also ran a season-best 44.14 in the 400-meter relay.

On Thursday, Shayla Dukes, Shayla Wilson, Kira Robinson and Latifah Davis ran a 51.07 in the 400-meter relay and Wilson and Robinson joined Ziondra Russ and Kayla Boone for a 4:26.75 in the 1600-meter relay.



Tuesday, April 22
BOYS ROLL TO 7-0 AFTER TOPPING CR; GIRLS MOVE TO 6-1

Nate Simpson jumped a new school record of 13 feet to lead the vaulters to a sweep, while Aaron Pettyjohn paced the hurdlers to a near sweep in two events as the boys knocked off Caesar Rodney, 77-69, and Smyrna, 97-49,Tuesday to improve to 7-0 on the season. Tony Cowart, Dawan Smith and James Baynard each had individual wins, while Devon Sivels, Jalil Davis, Dwayne Mason and Eddress Smith scored a big win in the 400-meter relay.

Meanwhile, Shayla Dukes won the high jump and long jump and also started a win in the 400-meter relay as the girls topped Smyrna, but lost their first meet of the season against undefeated CR. Kira Robinson, Kayla Boone and Shellisha Letthand added individual wins.

Overall, Mike Johnson (400) and Kayla Boone (300 hurdles) qualified automatically for states, while Mike Whaley qualified provisionally.

GIRLS TAKE FIRST, BOYS SECOND AT TWILIGHT RELAYS

Shelby and Shellisha Letthand swept the long and triple jump, Ashley Mosley and Kyien Young swept shot, and the girls shuttle hurdles and 400-meter relays scored gold as the girls won the Twilight Relays Group II championship at Caravel Academy Friday night. Meanwhile, Eddress Smith, Rossiny Beaucejour, Bryan Pettyjohn and Aaron Pettyjohn set a Group II meet record in the shuttle hurdles to pace the boys to a runner-up trophy overall.

BOYS, GIRLS STAY UNDEFEATED AFTER WINS AT DOVER

Tony Cowart busted out new Bloom records in the 400 (49.9) and 200 (22.0) and also sparked the 400-meter relay while the field events led by Jason Harper, James Baynard and Nate Simpson came up big as the boys swept through Dover, Polytech and St. Thomas More on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the girls dug deep with a total team effort to edge out Dover and also topple Polytech and St. Thomas More. Both the boys and girls improve to 5-0 for the season.

Rossiny Beaucejour qualified for states in the triple jump, while provisional qualifiers included Devon Sivels in the 200, James Baynard and Wayne Spence in the shot and Kayla Boone and Dalton Talley in the 300 hurdles.

BOYS SCORE RUNNER-UP TROPHY WHILE GIRLS TAKE THIRD AT KSB

The 400 and 800-meter relays took first while Tony Cowart (400) and Nate Simpson (pole vault) scored individual wins as the boys scored a runner-up trophy at the Keith S. Burgess Invitational Saturday at Lake Forest. Meanwhile, Shayla Wilson set a meet and school record with a 56.8 in the 400 meters and also won the 200 meters to lead the girls to a third-place trophy (SCORING ERRORS TO BE ADJUSTED AFTER GIRLS WERE ORIGINALLY FOURTH).

Rhonda Thomas and Eddress Smith qualified for states in the 300 hurdles, while Ashley Mosley did the same in shot put. Mike Johnson and Shellisha Letthand made provisionals in the 800 and high jump, respectively.

BOYS, GIRLS MOVE TO 2-0 AFTER TOPPING WOODBRIDGE

Aaron Pettyjohn and Dwayne Mason each scored a pair of individual wins and helped in winning relays as the boys won 17 of 18 events in a 136-9 win at Woodbridge Thursday to move to 2-0. Meanwhile, Shellisha Letthand set a school-record with a triple jump of 33-feet-9-inches and Kayla Boone set a new Bloom record in the 100 hurdles with a 16.1 as girls won, 111-19.

Devon Sivels (100), Jordan Showell (800), Jalil Davis (long jump) and Jason Harper (triple jump) each qualified for states and Nate Simpson nearly set a school-record in pole vault with a career-best jump of 12-6. Dawan Smith also ran his fastest times of the season in the 400 and 100.

BOYS, GIRLS ROLL PAST LAKE IN HENLOPEN OPENER

Dawan Smith won the 100, 200 and 400 meters with state-qualifying times and Nate Simpson, Nick Albert and Chris Pink each notched a state-qualifying career-best to sweep pole vault as the boys rolled past Lake in their Henlopen opener, 112.5-33.5. Aaron and Bryan Pettyjohn and Eddress Smith each qualified for states to sweep the 110 hurdles as well.

Meanwhile, Shayla Dukes qualified in the 100, 300 hurdles, high jump and long jump and Latifah Davis scored state qualifying wins in the 100 and 200 and also helped two winning relays as the girls also won big, 92-54.

 Kira Robinson (100), Kayla Boone (100 hurdles) , Shayla Wilson (400) and Shelby and Shellisha Letthand (long jump) each qualified for states, while Mike Johnson (400) and Jordan Showell (800) added provisional qualifiers.

BOYS OPEN SEASON WITH TROPHY AT CHRISTIANA RELAYS

The boys 1600-meter relay of Jordan Showell, Dawan Smith, Aaron Pettyjohn and Tony Cowart closed the day with a strong runner-up finish, and Nate Simpson won pole vault with a career-best 12-foot jump as the boys opened the 2008 season by scoring a third-place trophy at the Christiana Relays Saturday.

Meanwhile, the girls, paced by the sprint relays and the Letthand twins in jumps, just missed a trophy with a fourth-place finish.

WILSON WINS HENLOPEN 400 METERS IN NEW SCHOOL RECORD

Congratulations to senior Henlopen Conference Champion Shayla Wilson who won the 400-meter title Feb. 6 in a new school-record time of 58.96 -- the fastest time in the state this season. She also finished runner-up in the 200 meters.

Tony Cowart and Nick Albert also finished runner-up in the 200 meters and pole vault, respectively. Cowart took third in the 400 as well, while Jason Harper took third in high jump. Chris Pink qualified for states in pole vault with a career-best height of 10-0.
