FAQs before trying out...
      Spiritleader FAQ’s 2007

What are the time commitments my child would have to make weekly?
An average week consists of 2-3 Team practices, one tumbling or dance class,
      one game, plus fundraisers.

Can my child do another sport along with cheer/song?
Because song/cheer is a year-long activity, we have found that girls in
the past who tried to mange cheer/song, school and another sport were
      unsuccessful.

Is there a dress code for the program?
Practices require workout clothes, while performances require team
      uniforms.

Do I need any experience in cheer/dance before trying out?
Skills needed will be taught at clinics, but prior experience will give
you an extra advantage. Cheerleaders should have taken gymnastics
classes, while Songleaders should have taken dance classes at some point
      in their training.

What do we do in the cheer/song program?
We cheer for many sports at MHS; we also perform at all rallies, compete
at State and National Championships, do fundraisers, perform at
community events, and show school spirit.

If you are a cheer/songleader do you have to take PE?
All freshman cheer/songleaders are required to take one FULL semester of
PE their freshman year, because Spiritleading is considered a PE class
one semester, and a Performing Arts class the next.

Will I need to take any outside classes to be part of this program?
Yes. In addition to practices with the team, each member is asked to
take one extra class a week to improve their skill level. We recommend a
tumbling class for cheerleaders and a dance class for songleaders.

Do we practice during the summer(2007)?
Yes, July 9 – July 26. Camp is July 19–22. Other practices August 13–31.

Do the Spiritleaders get to use the schools gym/weightroom?
Even BETTER, we have a sponsorship at 24-hour Fitness that provides each
cheer/songleader a gym pass for FREE during the school year.

      What is Song?
Song is our dance program here at MHS. If you are a dancer (ex. ballet,
jazz. Hip hop) this is the program for you!

What is the total amount I will invest in my child’s year of
      cheer/song?

The total investment will vary from $2,000 - $3,000 per year. It will
vary due to size of teams, traveling expenses and the uniforms ordered.
We have a plan in place for every girl to fundraise 25% to 100% of that
amount. Working Bingo will also offset much of the financial
      responsibility.

What sports do we cheer for?
We currently cheer for football, basketball, volleyball, lacrosse,
baseball, wrestling, and water polo. We are looking to increase the size
of our program so we can offer more support to other activities at MHS
      and the community.

Are the Spiritleaders part of rallies?
Not only do the Spiritleaders get front row seats, but we also perform
      at every rally.
