Sara Kolobielski, Sr.

Kolobielski, a varsity hockey standout by trade, closed out her two-year stint with MHSCC with an outstanding postseason, first sprinting to a Killens-best 20:38 to place fourth in counties and then racing to the all-Henlopen first team. She placed 31st in DII states.

Griffith closed out her four-year career as the team’s No. 6 runner in the state meet. The senior captain had a solid season overall, running a career-best 22:24 earlier in the season to place among the fastest senior runners at MHS over the past 12 seasons.

Despite fighting sickness during his final week, Gibbs rebounded with a strong sprint to make the Top 40 in the Div. II state championship Saturday at Killens Pond. He had opened the postseason with a career-best 17:31 to place 4th in the Kent County championship.

Johnson, a rookie senior, has done a fine job making the transition from the track. In both the county and conference meets this past week, he ran his best time at Killens Pond -- a 19:35, good enough for a medal and the first alternate spot for the state meet team.

Eshelman has once again made great strides in his second season on the cross country team. He busted out a career-best 18:04 to make the county’s top 10 runners and then followed up with a second-team performance in the Henlopen Conference championship.

Cartwright has been steadily consistent throughout his freshman season and appears poised for future success. He wrapped up last week with two sub-21 runs at Killens, including a course-best 20:28 Saturday to earn an alternate spot for states..

Savage turned it up a notch last week to make a serious impact on the varsity scoring. He busted out his best home course time by nearly a minute on Wednesday and then followed that with his first stint in the 17s with a 17:56 as the team’s No. 3 runner at Bellevue.

After fighting through sickness during the first half of the season, Clendaniel has gotten back to her speedy self with strong runs as the team’s No. 4 runner last week. After a home course best on Wednesday, she finished with a season-best 22:29 at Bellevue Friday.

Helmick, a four-year veteran, reached a pair of standout milestones last week. First, the team’s frontrunner posted his home course record of 16:55 before surging to a school-record 16:31 at the Joe O’Neill Invitational at Bellevue on a cold, rainy Friday.

Phalen has steadily improved since day one, working hard in practice and dropping his 5K trial times. Despite breaking a bone in his arm, he has continued to battle at practice, running his three fastest mile times under 7 minutes during repeats last week.

Groce has quietly made her presence on the preseason varsity, keeping pace with veteran runners. Her confidence has grown with each trial she has run, and after smashing repeat times last week, she appears poised to make a scoring impact for the team in ‘09.
