HELMICK, BOYS TAKE HOME HENLOPEN MEET CHAMPIONSHIPS

The boys scored a one-point win over runner-up CR to claim their first team title since 1989 at the Henlopen Conference Championship meet Saturday at Killens Pond State Park. Senior co-captain Patrick Helmick became the first MHS male in the history of the Henlopen Conference to win the individual cross country title, surging to a Killens-best 16:49.

Carl Richardson (7th) ran a 17:41 to make first-team all-conference, while Taiwan Savage (8th) and Steve Eshelman (13th) made the second team. Mike Doughty rounded out the top 5 by just missing Hon. Mention. Erik Gibbs and Nick Albert rounded out the varsity.

Meanwhile, Molly Bliss (6th) and Sara Kolobielski (7th) reached the all-conference first team to lead the girls to a third-place team finish behind Cape Henlopen and Sussex Tech. Alexis Groce (11th) made the second-team, while Stef Clendaniel (19th) made Hon. Mention. Shai Sefiane, Alexis Guzman and Kacie Jackson rounded out the varsity.

Jessica Griffith won the junior varsity race, while Sarah Holbruner, Karrie Herrman and Kim Richardson scored Top 10 medals. Mike Johnson also placed third for a medal in the boys JV race.

11TH ANNUAL REINDEER STAMPEDE TO BE HELD SATURDAY, NOV. 28

The MHSCC Boosters will present the 11th annual Reindeer Stampede 5K or one-mile walk on Saturday, Nov. 28 at the Milford Millponds Nature Preserve off Abbotts Pond Road, site of the MHS cross country course. Race time is 10:15 a.m.

Pre-registration cost $10; race-day entry cost $15. All participants get a long-sleeve Reindeer Stampede 5K T-shirt. The top three finishers in numerous age groups will get a hand-crafted wooden reindeer trophy.

Tuesday, November 3
BLISS, GIRLS SPRINT TO KENT COUNTY TITLES

Sophomore Molly Bliss ran a career-best 20:16 to win the individual Kent County title and also help the girls claim their first team championship since 1994 Tuesday at Killens Pond State Park.

Teammate Alexis Groce finished runner-up, just three seconds behind Bliss with a 20:19 -- the fastest time ever recorded by an MHS freshman, while senior Sara Kolobielski ran a Killens-best 20:53 to place fourth. Sophomores Stef Clendaniel (13th) and Shai Sefiane (20th) ran bests to round out the team's scorers.

 Meanwhile, the boys got eked out of a championship, tying front-running CR, 31-31, before losing the 6th-man tie-breaker by seven seconds. Patrick Helmick finished runner-up overall, while Erik Gibbs (4th), Carl Richardson (7th), Taiwan Savage (8th) and Steve Eshelman (10th) each ran bests to make the All Kent-County team.

Nick Albert, David McCormick, Sarah Holbruner and Morgan Parsley each added career-best times as well.

BUCS WRAP UP REGULAR SEASON WITH 20 WINS

Patrick Helmick and Molly Bliss led the way as the boys and girls swept through Lake Forest and Indian River Wednesday at Killens Pond State Park. The boys finished the regular season at 11-1 overall, 9-1 in the conference, while the girls went 9-2, 8-2.

 Nick Albert ran a career-best to break onto the varsity, while J.C. Schwind and Shai Sefiane also posted career-best times.

BOYS MOVE TO 9-1; GIRLS FALL TO CAPE

Patrick Helmick, Erik Gibbs, Carl Richardson and Taiwan Savage took the top four spots to lead the boys to three lop-sided wins versus Cape Henlopen, Sussex Central and Delmarva Christian Wednesday at Milford Millponds Nature Preserve.

Meanwhile, Molly Bliss and Alexis Groce ran their fastest home course times to pace the girls to a shut out win of Sussex Central.  Unfortunately, the girls lost a tough one to Cape Henlopen, 23-36.

HELMICK SETS SCHOOL RECORD AT BELLEVUE

Senior co-captain Patrick Helmick finished 16th overall in a MHS school record time of 16:31 to pace the Bucs at the Joe O'Neill Invitational at Bellevue State Park on a cold, rainy Friday. Alexis Groce ran a new career-best of 20:39 to lead the girls.

 Numerous runners ran career-best times as the varsity boys finished 10th of 35 teams and the varsity girls finished 12th of 32.

COOL DAY BRINGS HOT TIMES FOR BUCS IN WINS OVER SMYRNA, THOMAS MORE

Patrick Helmick set a new home course record with a 16:55 and Molly Bliss surged through with a 20:53 to lead the boys and girls to wins over Smyrna and St. Thomas More Wednesday at Milford Millponds Nature Preserve. The boys beat Smyrna, 15-48, while the girls won 20-37; each team shut out St. Thomas More, 15-50. Overall, with the cool temperatures, 26 boys and 19 girls ran their fastest home course times. BOYS, GIRLS PLACE WELL AT WHITE CLAY CREEK

Patrick Helmick and Alexis Groce paced the boys and girls to a fourth and sixth-place finish, respectively, out of 25 teams at the University of Delaware Invitational at White Clay Creek State Park Friday.

BOYS, GIRLS SWEEP AWAY SEAFORD, POLY AT HOME

Patrick Helmick (17:12) and Molly Bliss (21:11) paced the boys and girls to victories Wednesday at Milford Millponds Nature Preserve. The boys defeated Seaford, 19-42, and Polytech, 19-40, while the girls shut out Seaford, 15-50, and topped Polytech, 18-43.

Alexis Groce (21:42) set a new freshman course record with a great run as well.

BUCS CONQUER THE CREEK AT SALLIES INV.

Patrick Helmick placed third with a strong 17:55, helping to pace the varsity boys to a fifth-place finish, good enough for team shirts. Alexis Groce, Mollis Bliss and Sara Kolobielski scored medals to lead the girls.

GIRLS GRAB TROPHY, BOYS SHINE AT TIDEWATER CLASSIC

Alexis Groce (20:40) and Molly Bliss (20:41) scored top 15 medals and also moved higher on the MHS All-time Fastest 5K list to lead the girls to a 3rd-place trophy at the Tidewater Classic in Salisbury, Md., Wednesday. Meanwhile, Patrick Helmick placed fourth overall with a career-best 16:39 to help the boys finish 4th out 27 teams.

Carl Richardson and Erik Gibbs ran career times in the 17s to move up higher on the MHS All-time Fastest 5K list as well. Jordan Lane and Taiwan Savage also scored career times to round out the top 5 boys scorers, while Sara Kolobielski, Jessica Griffith and Kacie Jackson busted out bests to lead the girls' scoring pack.

 In all, 31 Bucs scored career-best times and seven others added season-bests.

BOYS MISS OUT ON MIDDLETOWN INV. WIN ON 6TH-MAN TIE-BREAKER

Patrick Helmick ran a 17:08 to come one step from winning the individual title at the Middletown Invitational at Lums Pond on Friday as the boys tied Concord with 78 points, but lost on the 6th-man tie-breaker.

Erik Gibbs and Carl Richardson each broke 18 minutes to earn Top 10 medals, while Taiwan Savage and Mike Doughty rounded on the boys scoring 5. Nick Albert, who ran a career-best 19:54, and Clarence Cartwright rounded out the boys varsity.

For the girls, Alexis Groce scored the 8th Fastest MHS 5K time with a 21:23 to lead the way, while Molly Bliss finished with a 21:41. Kacie Jackson ran a career-best 23:19 before Jessica Griffith, Abby Mitchell, Shai Sefiane and Alexis Guzman rounded out the top 7 with great times.

 Jordan Lane, who had been sick during the week, won the junior varsity race with a 19 flat, while Steve Eshelman and Mike Johnson scored Top 15 medals. Oddly enough, the JV boys tied for second with Concord as well, but beat them on a 6th-man tiebreaker.

BOYS, GIRLS MOVE TO 2-1 AFTER HOT, HOT DAY AT SCHUTTE

Despite scorching hot & humid weather, Patrick Helmick and Molly Bliss each won their race to help the boys and girls improve to 2-1 on the season Wednesday at Schutte Park in Dover. The boys defeated Sussex Tech, 21-34, and Dover, 19-39, while the girls knocked off Dover, 20-41, but fell to Tech, 23-35.

For the girls, Alexis Groce, Kacie Jackson, Shaimae Sefiane, Jessica Griffith, Alexis Guzman and Abby Mitchell rounded the varsity 7, while Carl Richardson, Erik Gibbs, Taiwan Savage, Mike Doughty, Nick Albert and Clarence Cartwright filled the boys varsity.

BOYS VARSITY, JV TAKE THIRD-PLACE TROPHIES AT LAKE INV.

Senior captains Patrick Helmick and Clarence Cartwright scored Top 10 medals to lead the boys varsity and JV, respectively, to third-place trophies Saturday at the Lake Forest Invitational at Killens Pond State Park. Meanwhile, freshman Alexis Groce ran a stellar 21:33 to move up to 12th on the MHS All-time Fastest 5K list to lead the girls to a 6th-place finish.

 For the boys, seniors Erik Gibbs, Mike Johnson and Nick Albert scored medals, while Steve Eshelman and Mike Doughty each scored his career-best to help put the entire boys varsity under 18:52. Tevin Cartwright, Frank Clendening, Henry Phalen, Jesse McCormick, Derek Munce, Trevor Maloney, Kenny Barlow and Cory Morris also added career times.

For the girls, Alexis Guzman, Alli Henderson, Kim Richardson, Bethany Mitzell, Karrie Herrman, Cat Lallier, Emily Fisher, Morgan Parsley, Emily Marconi and Courtney Dressler scored career-bests.

GIRLS OPEN '09 WITH WIN AS BOYS LOSE A TOUGH ONE TO CR

Molly Bliss, Alexis Groce and Sara Kolobielski each broke 22 minutes to score a 1-2-3 sweep, leading the girls to a 27-30 win over Caesar Rodney in Wednesday's 2009 season opener at Brecknock Park. Patrick Helmick and Carl Richardson each broke 18 minutes to pace the boys in a tough 24-32 loss.

Groce (21:56), a freshman, and Richardson (17:49), a sophomore, each made the MHS All-time Fastest 5K list with their stellar performances.

Erik Gibbs, Jordan Lane, Taiwan Savage, Steve Eshelman and Mike Doughty rounded out the boys varsity 7 all under 19:10, while Jessica Griffith, Kacie Jackson, Tori Cox and Steffi Clendaniel each made the girls varsity.

NEW SITE PROVES SUCCESSFUL FOR 10TH ANNUAL REINDEER STAMPEDE 5K

A big thank you goes out to the 250-plus folks who participated in the Milford High School Cross Country Boosters 10th annual Reindeer Stampede 5K run/walk held Saturday, Nov. 29 at the new Milford Millponds Nature Preserve.

Kyle Luke won the overall award with a 17:31, while Elizabeth Paul scored the top female trophy in a new course-record time of 19:33.

The MHSCC teams much appreciated all the people and sponsors in the Milford community who helped to make the event a success.

New for the 2008 season, the MHSCC teams have a new home course site located at the Milford Millponds Nature Preserve near Williamsville, Abbotts Pond and Blairs Pond. We have been accessing the wooded trail at two locations. The trail itself is ready for running marked with 1/2-mile markers and colored posts.

Location A on the maps: Located on Abbotts Pond Road where large power lines cross, the course start & finish exist here. An improved future parking area will be in place once construction begins, hopefully by late-September. Right now, vehicles can pull off the road and park in the grassy area.

Location B on the maps: Runners may park at the Blairs Pond boat ramp and enter the trail here at about the mile mark and jog to the start/finish area.

BOYS 9TH, GIRLS 16TH OUT OF 28 TEAMS AT STATE MEET

Patrick Helmick finished 8th overall in the Division II race with a 17:27 helping the boys to a 9th-place finish in the Division II state championship at White Clay Creek State Park Saturday. The girls, led by Sara Kolobielski, finished 16th.

Steve Eshelman ran his career-best time of 18:49, while Jordan Lane, Erik Gibbs, Carl Richardson, Jordan Showell and Robert Fisher, Lauren Moore, Camille Sennett and Kari Elzey all ran their fastest White Clay time.

BOYS, GIRLS FINISH RUNNER-UP AT HENLOPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS

The MHSCC boys and girls capped a strong Henlopen slate by finishing runner-up in both varsity races Saturday at the Henlopen Championships at Killens Pond State Park. The boys scored 66 points to CR's 48, while the girls finished behind Cape with 93 points -- one point ahead of third-place CR.

Patrick Helmick and Sara Kolobielski each placed 6th overall to earn first-team All-Henlopen honors, while Erik Gibbs (8th), Taiwan Savage (12th) and Molly Bliss (12th) earned 2nd-team recognition. Stefanie Clendaniel (16th), Jordan Lane (19th), Carl Richardson (23rd) and Jessica Griffith (23rd) each ran to Honorable Mention. Gibbs' 17:48 tied him for 14th on the MHSCC All-time Fastest 5K list, and Taiwan Savage and Jordan Lane each moved up on the freshman and junior Bloom Top 10.

Jordan Showell won the junior varsity race to help lead the JV boys to the team title with a mere 20 points. Robert Fisher, Clarence Cartwright, Mike Dunn and Mike Doughty also placed in the JV top 10 for medals.

Patrick Helmick and Molly Bliss each placed sixth overall to help lead the boys and girls to runner-up trophies on a cold, windy, rainy Tuesday at the Kent County championships at Schutte Park in Dover.

For the boys, Taiwan Savage, Steve Eshelman (with a career-best 18:50), Jordan Lane and Erik Gibbs each placed in the Top 15 All-Kent County squad for the boys, while Stefanie Clendaniel, Jessica Griffith and Becky Godwin made it for the girls.

Lauren Moore and Jesse McCormick added career-best times.

BUCS WRAP UP WITH BEST OVERALL RECORD IN RECENT TIME

Patrick Helmick, Erik Gibbs and Taiwan Savage (who matched a career-best 18:39) took the top three spots overall to help the boys sweep away Cape Henlopen, 18-42, Lake Forest, 17-45, and St. Thomas More, 15-50, in Wednesday regular-season finale at the College of Marine Studies in Lewes. Jordan Lane, Steve Eshelman, Carl Richardson and Chris Pink (with a career-best 19:34) rounded out the varsity to help the boys finish 9-1 overall, 8-1 in the Henlopen Conference.

On the girls side, Molly Bliss moved up to 7th all-time at MHS with a 21:22 to lead the way for the girls, who topped Lake, 24-31, and St. Thomas More, 15-50, but fell to undefeated Cape, 23-36. The girls finished at 8-2 overall, 7-2 in the conference. Sara Kolobielski followed Bliss, while Stefanie Clendaniel came in with a career-best 22:00.

Overall, Kyle Mullarkey, Camille Sennett and Rochelle Sizemore added career-best times.

PERFECT WEATHER BRINGS RECORD TIMES AT BELLEVUE

Patrick Helmick ran a 16:42, becoming the second fastest runner in school history -- just eight seconds off the school record, and Sara Kolobielski busted out a 20:18 to move up to No. 4 on the all-time fastest MHS female 5K list to lead a host of Bucs to a career day at the Bellevue Invitational Friday at Bellevue State Park.

Senior Becky Godwin, juniors Erik Gibbs and Jessica Griffith, sophomore Steve Eshelman and freshmen Taiwan Savage, Carl Richardson, Molly Bliss and Stefanie Clendaniel each improved their rank on the Bloom Top 10 lists. Bliss also moved to No. 11 on the all-time fastest 5K list with her 21:33.

In all, 40 of 43 Bucs ran season-best times and 38 scored career-best marks.

BUCS PULL OFF SWEEP OF DOVER, TECH AT REDDEN

Patrick Helmick and Sara Kolobielski led solid packs as the Bucs swept Dover and Sussex Tech Monday at Redden State Forest. The boys beat Dover, 24-31, and Tech, 27-31, while the girls won, 19-43 and 18-37, respectively. Both teams improve to 5-1 on the season.

 Erik Gibbs ran an 18:14 to move up to 4th on the Bloom Top 10 for juniors, while Mike Dunn, Stanley Warrington, Justin Wilkins and Caleb Primos each added career-best times.

Patrick Helmick (19th) and Molly Bliss (52nd) led the way with solid performances at the University of Delaware Invitational at White Clay Creek State Park Friday. The boys finished 13th overall, while the girls 15th.

Erik Gibbs, Jordan Showell, Taiwan Savage, Carl Richardson, Steve Eshelman and Mike Doughty ran career-best times to round out the varsity behind front runner Patrick Helmick as the boys topped Smyrna, 15-48, Wednesday at Milford Millponds Nature Preserve. The girls, led by Sara Kolobielski and a season-best time by Becky Godwin, downed Smyrna 24-35. Both teams improved to 3-1 on the season.

 Mike Dunn, Stanley Warrington, David McCormick, Justin Wilkins, Caleb Primos and Kyle Mullarkey all improved with career-best times.

Junoir Sara Kolobielski moved into the No. 5 spot on the MHS all-time fastest 5K list with a 20:53, while freshman Molly Bliss scored the 15th spot with a 21:49 as the girls rolled to a 4th place finish out of 20 teams at the Tidewater Classic Wednesday in Salisbury. HELMICK, BLISS LEAD WAY FOR TWO WINS IN HOME COURSE OPENER

Junior Patrick Helmick (17:56) and freshman Molly Bliss (23:13) won the boys and girls races, respectively, to lead the Bucs to a pair of victories in their home course opener at the Milford Millponds Nature Preserve Wednesday. The boys downed Seaford in a close one, 25-30, and topped Polytech, 17-44, while the girls won 18-41 and 17-46, respectively.

BOYS, GIRLS RUN WELL AT MIDDLETOWN INVITATIONAL

Patrick Helmick placed 4th overall and Sara Kolobielski finished 10th to lead the varsity boys and girls, respectively at the Middletown Invitational at Lums Pond State Park Friday.

Taiwan Savage, Jordan Showell, Erik Gibbs and Steven Eshelman put together a great pack to lead the boys to a third-place finish out of 15 teams, while the girls finished 8th as 18 of 19 runners scored their season-best times.

In the junior varsity races, Jordan Lane finished runner-up, while Robert Fisher, Carl Richardson and Cory Cates medaled as did Becky Godwin for the girls.

HELMICK, GRIFFITH LEAD VARSITYS IN SEASON OPENER AT LAKE INV.

Patrick Helmick scored a top 15 medal and Jessica Griffith scored her best Killens Pond time ever helping the MHSCC teams open 2008 with a strong performance at the 51st Lake Forest Invitational Saturday at Killens Pond. Sara Kolobielski scored a third-place medal in the junior varsity race with a stellar 22:41, putting her on the Bloom Top 10 junior list.

Jordan Showell, Erik Gibbs, Taiwan Savage, Jordan Lane, Robert Fisher and Carl Richardson helped Helmick carry the varsity boys to a 7th place finish out of 24 teams. Savage and Richardson made the fastest Bloom freshman list to start their careers.

Stefanie Clendaniel,  Becky Godwin, Molly Bliss, Lauren Moore, Chelsea Stapleford and Camille Sennett rounded out the varsity finishers for the girls, who finished 13th overall.

In the JV races, Maria Medlarz shattered her fastest time by over 3 minutes, while veteran Joe Katz also busted out a career-best performance.

RECORD CROWD SUPPORTS 9TH ANNUAL REINDEER STAMPEDE

Nearly 250 participants came out to support the 9th annual Milford High School Cross Country Boosters Reindeer Stampede 5K Saturday, Nov. 24 at the MHS stadium. CR grads Kyle Luke (16:58) and Elizabeth Paul (19:47) won the overall male and female awards, respectively.

BOYS CLOSE OUT SEASON WITH BEST FINISH IN 10 YEARS AT STATES

Nearly putting the entire varsity seven under 19 minutes, the MHSCC boys wrapped up their season matching their best state-meet finish in 10 years, placing 6th out of 24 teams Saturday at Killens Pond.

Patrick Helmick led the way with a 17:21 (19th overall), while Jordan Lane followed with a career-best 18:12. Seniors Dom Cartwright and George Kershaw then scored their Killens-best times, while Travis White and Jordan Showell each broke in the 18s for the first time. Erick Cisneros closed out the pack with a stellar 19:01.

Meanwhile, Becky Godwin led the way for the girls who were running without their regular-season top 4 runners. Becky Clendaniel added a season-best while her sister Erin knocked out a career-best 25:26. Emmery Williams finished with a season-best, while Jessica Griffith, Sarah Holbruner and Michelle Kramlich closed out the varsity. The girls finished 18th of 24 teams.

BOYS RALLY FOR 4TH AT CONFERENCES; JV GUYS SURGE TO FIRST

Patrick Helmick ran a 17:17 to move up on the MHS All-time Fastest 5K list and claim first-team All-conference by placing 6th in the Henlopen Conference Championships Saturday at Killens Pond. Jordan Lane also made Honorable Mention as the boys rallied to finish 4th overall.

 Overall, Dom Cartwright, George Kershaw and Erick Cisneros joined Lane and Helmick as the boys put five guys under 19 all at once for the first time in five seasons. Jordan Showell followed with a career-best 19:02 to make the Bloom Top 10 junior list, while Travis White rounded out the varsity with a 19:11.

Liz Butterly placed 9th overall to make second-team All-Henlopen as the girls finished 5th. Erin Clendaniel and Emmery Williams earned medals in the junior varsity race.

 The boys junior varsity placed first, putting five guys in the 19s and scoring four Top 10 medals. Mike Whaley won the race with a career-best 19:08, while Cory Cates, Robert Fisher and Clarence Cartwright also medaled with career-best times. Kyle FitzPatrick closed out his four-year career with a stellar Killens time of 19:47 to place 11th.

 In middle school action, the MMSCCers finished their season on Saturday at the Delaware Open, the state meet for middle school cross country. Kyle Breckner placed 3rd and Jeremy Morgan placed 20th out of 70 runners. Trevor Maloney, DeAnte Freeman, and Kyle Kolobielski finished with their BEST times of the season! Kyra Baynard, Kiana Freeman, Briana Kreese, and Lauren Wallace also recorded their fasted times of the season! Kenny Barlow and Amy Wilson also competed for the Bucs. Congratulations to the entire cross country team for an awesome season!

BOYS, GIRLS TAKE THIRD IN COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

Patrick Helmick, Jordan Lane, Liz and Alex Butterly and Shayla Wilson each made the All-Kent County Top 15 to help lead the Bucs to third-place finishes in the 2007 Kent County Championship held at MHS Tuesday. Wilson's 21:31 earned her the 9th spot on the MHS All-time Fastest 5K list.

 George Kershaw placed 16th overall with a career-best 18:31 to make the Bloom top 10 senior list, while Dom Cartwright, Travis White and Jordan Showell followed with career-best times. Erick Cisneros rounded out the varsity seven, while Robert Fisher became the 12th MHS boy to break 20 minutes this season.

 For the girls, Becky Godwin ran well, while Jessica Griffith and Sarah Holbruner each ran career times. Becky Clendaniel rounded out the top seven.

In all, Ian Dobie, Doug Mullen, Johan Fraysse, Caleb Primos, Rachel Murphy and Michelle Kramlich added career-best times.

BUCS BATTLE IN REGULAR-SEASON FINALE AGAINST CAPE, LAKE

Patrick Helmick posted the 9th fastest boys 5K time in MHS school history with a 17:21 and Shayla Wilson added the 15th fastest girls 5K with a 21:50 as the Bucs wrapped up their regular season at home Wednesday.

The boys topped Lake Forest, 24-33, but lost another close one to Cape, 27-28 to finish 3-6 on the season, while the girls slipped to Lake, 25-30, and Cape, 25-33, to finish at 6-3. In all, 18 boys and 4 girls earned career-bests, including Jordan Lane and Becky Godwin who each improved on the Bloom Top 10 lists. George Kershaw also added a stellar 18:42 career-best, while Clarence Cartwright shattered a best with a 19:43.
