Congenital heart disease is the most common birth defect. Thanks to surgical and medical advances, today 90% of children born with a heart defect will survive to adulthood. It is now estimated that 1 million adults with congenital heart disease live in the United States, 15,000 of which live in Wisconsin. While the majority of these patients live a very normal life, many are at risk for late complications. Unfortunately, in the last 10 years, only 40 physicians nationwide have been trained to care for this unique population. Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, in conjunction with Froedtert Hospital and the Medical College of Wisconsin, runs one of the few Adult Congenital Heart Disease Programs in the country to take care of this growing population.
