Hi all -- I'm sending to you as you were noted in Gigi's last status update. Please forward to your respective groups as you deem appropriate. Thanks! Jo Rust
=====================================================================
The Floresca’s are blessed with a huge support group encompassing numerous organizations (i.e. hockey clubs, church, co-workers, friends, etc.) from over five states. They can not begin to thank each and every one but you should know they are very thankful.
Many have responded and would like to assist in anyway possible. Attached is an update on what has been organized so far and events we have planned within the next couple months. Contact information has been listed per event but please don't hesitate to email Mitch McLain or Jo Rust if any questions.
We are planning a welcome home dinner at St. Michael’s church for the Floresca’s upon their return from Atlanta – sometime late July. We anticipate organizing a buffet dinner with a donation fee per family – details to follow. Marc actively participated in many organizations and we know we have not captured all the planned events. We're compiling and communicating information to help cast to a broader network. We will continue to provide everyone with updates--feel free to forward any information to:

6/27:
Hello everyone
June 12th has been a defining moment for us as well as the rest of our small family. It was a beautiful, hot summer day with not a cloud to mar its beauty. Kyla and Marc were roller skating as they normally do to spend time together. The storm that came down was so sudden and ferocious with gusting wind that was whipping everything preventing Marc and Kyla to make it to the car parked a hundred meters or so from them. They decided to take shelter under a tree that lines the pyramid. They waited huddled under the faithful tree for about 10 minutes to wait out the storm. They were about to leave and was getting up when Kyla said,"Dad I'm scared". Marc bent to hug Kyla when a tree brach broke off and whipped Marc at the back before catapulting 15 feet from them. It was a singular blow that change our lives forever....
People says miracles abound. Really? I was angry, bewildered and scared for what was happening to my husband and the future it implied.... I sure was not very receptive to know there was such intangible a thing as a miracle but God must be telling me something.. A trauma surgeon from the MED happen to pass by on the way to his work. He hurriedly pulled over and monitored Marc for internal bleeding and was able to give his trauma partner in the MED report before we even got there. Marc sister also happened to be rounding a corner and locked eyes with my daughter standing in the rain. She took a route that day that she never did before. Marc's surgery was supposed to be 3 days after the injury. He received surgery less than 24 hrs. because the chief of neurosurgery happened to come back from vacation early There is no better surgeon than him around Memphis..We asked to be evaluated by Shepherd through a case manager that Monday. The case
manager told me that it will take 3 days before Shepherd will respond so it will be likely on Wednesday. I stepped out of TICU less than 40 minutes after I spoke to the case manager and there she was.. a Shepherd representative ready to check Marc out. She just happened to be in the area....Our flight to Atlanta was postponed on Friday for circumstances beyond our control. But it also allowed us to be interviewed by Channel 5 thus allowing Marc's highschool friends and classmates to know giving us more people for moral support. Best of all my daughter came out of that horrendous incident with barely a scratch on her tooth and very minor gashes on her right elbow It's coincidence you say.. if you believe in coincidences....
We finally made it here in Shepherd in Atlanta. Marc has been undergoing PT,OT,Recreational Therapy in the space of 5 days. He was tired and weak for that first three days but is now wheeling around. He tries to get out of bed through a plank called transfer board though I have to help him with his balance. He stood up thursday for 30 minutes statically and he said he cant feel his toes but it is a start..
A friend of mine has been trying to help me deal with the situation..She said that through out all of this tragedy, God never leaves you alone rather He carries you by providing you with multitude of "angels"....
I certainly feel that she is right...ALL of you has certainly helped me and my family carry the must awful burden of this incident and I THANK YOU ALL . You have all been my "angels" lightening my load. With all of you behind him and our family , we will anything be but better from that day on forward....
Sincerly,
Maria Gigj Floresca

6/20: WMCTV news story on Marc's accident and family challenge
6/20: Upate - Marc will be transferred to Atlanta on Monday, June 22. He is still at The Med.
6/18: Good morning. I had the opportunity to visit with Marc and his family for quite a while last night. I also spoke with Jo Rust about her efforts. Thankfully it seems that we have a lot of people that want to help out whether it is financially, with their trade, providing manpower or even food. Marc is a part of many organizations and I think it would be best to pool our efforts together so there is no duplication and we can get the best results. I am e-mailing all of you because you have the ability to help by forwarding communication to the members of your organizations. If it is alright with everyone else I would like to head the effort to transform their home along with Jo Rust and my wife Loleta so that it will be suitable for his return in a wheelchair.
Here are some things that I can update you on if you are not aware.
- The plan is to transport Marc to Atlanta on Friday morning for an approximate 30 days stay for rehab.
- Dave Stevens is working on 2 or 3 on ice sessions in Decatur which the proceeds will go to the Floresca Family.
- I will meet with Gigi’s best friend which has a key to their home, is a physical therapist and will advise me on what needs to be done to their home. (Wednesday of next week.)
- After I meet with Gigi’s friend I will reach out for help with a work days to get everything done.
- Jo Rust is going to go through the process of setting up a trust fund with Bank of America by tomorrow.
- We will also begin looking at other fund raising possibilities.
If anyone has any questions or concerns please let me know. Our family will be in Atlanta ourselves from tomorrow morning through Tuesday for a hockey tournament of our own, but we will all have access to cell phones and e-mail.
Thank you,
Mitch McLain
