Letter from the MYHL President
I hope everyone is beginning to enjoy this summer season. While the Stanley Cup playoffs are in our midst, it won’t be long though before our next ice hockey season is upon us. Our new board is in place and we have already begun making plans and we are looking forward to another great year of hockey in the greater Memphis area.
Looking back and reflecting on our league’s past, we owe a great deal to all of those that participated on the board and volunteered their time to build and maintain our league. We owe a tremendous amount of thanks to all of you, the parents and families that have embraced the great sport of ice hockey and created the opportunities to allow your children to play. We are all aware of our situation; we all know that we have ice but for only half of a year. We are extremely thankful for the Riverkings and their presence here and for the Desoto Civic Center to continue to allow us to use available ice. We have run an excellent league, we have developed our players, and we continue to be competitive when we play outside our area. But it is also time to raise the bar and look ahead to where we need and want to be.
Our stated goal is simply to be the best ice hockey organization in our southeastern district. That is a fairly lofty goal, but we can achieve this with your help. We have several goals and initiatives and some exciting new announcements. Here are some of the many things on the radar that we plan to work towards and implement for this season.
- Bringing a dedicated, recreational ice facility to Memphis
- We will continue to work with and help facilitate any initiatives to bring a home rink to our area
- Utilizing all available ice
- With smarter scheduling and opening up the offering, we want to maximize the exposure of the available ice to you, our constituents
- Look for other supplemental uses of ice including clinics, ‘stick-and-puck’ sessions, 3 on 3 mini-tourneys, and open hockey opportunities
- Managing both the on and off ice experience to foster skill development and competitive hockey
- In certain recreational divisions, we may have to be creative in forming teams and promoting ‘peer vs. peer’ hockey
- Taking advantage of off-ice teaching opportunities
- Developing our coaching program and working on adoption of the American Hockey Development Model, ensuring a consistent approach to teaching hockey to our kids
- Adopting a feedback system to ensure we are meeting and exceeding your expectation
- Building a Public Relations ‘center’ and actively marketing our league and recruiting new playerso
- Enhancing our board and volunteer opportunities to help increase awareness of our league in our area
- Implement fund-raising ideas to help offset cost
- Utilize the media and other ‘grass roots’ marketing techniques to grow our league
Here are some announcements and events to put on your calendar:
First, save the date of Sunday, August 16th as we plan to have our first annual MYHL Hockey Expo event at the DCC. More details to follow as we solidify our plans, but this will be a great opportunity to come and meet the new board, learn more about how the league operates, spend some time with fellow players and families, meet the coaches and referees, and enjoy some great hockey camaraderie. Registration will also be open that day. In addition, we will also be hosting an equipment consignment swap and sale, for everyone to stock up for the season. Skate Sharpening will also be available.
Second, the MYHL will be taking over management of the Memphis Adult Blues City Hockey League. By bringing adult hockey under the MYHL umbrella, we have a better collective voice to help sell our league to potential developers willing to build a rink.
Third, travel and high school tryouts will be held in successive weekends in Decatur, AL, August 22 & 23 and then August 29 & 30 respectively. There will be more details to follow.
Fourth, we are targeting our first ice to be available at the DCC on October 5th. Mark your calendars!
There are many more things that we can do to enhance our league and ensure our kids have another phenomenal season. But all of these initiatives require your input and help. There are plenty of volunteer opportunities available, from leading a sub-committee, to helping with various events, helping to raise funds, recruiting friends and neighbors to join the league, or simply just offering your time. Look for announcements in email and postings on the MYHL website as these opportunities come to light. The success of our league is largely dependent on you and the strength of your commitment to ensure our league has a bright future. Please let me know if you desire to help. Speaking on the board’s behalf, we welcome your thoughts and your input and we look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you for visiting the homepage of the Memphis Youth Hockey League. We provide an avenue for children of all ages to learn the great sport of ice hockey. We have teams that are very skilled and participate around the Southeast. We also have teams at several of the area high schools. Our biggest division is our recreational league. Our recreational league has teams for children as young as 5 years old to high school students. EVERYONE IS WELCOME TO PLAY. NO EXPERIENCE IS NEEDED! Our recreational league begins in mid October and goes through early March. Come join us for some great fun at the rink. If you have anymore questions, please email us at info@memphisyouthhockey.com. If you have any questions about our league please contact Russ Beatse, our Chairman.
We have teams from Mite through Bantam, of all abilities, and the name of the game is FUN! The MYHL supported 5 High School hockey teams this past season. Three of the teams were academic while 2 teams were open to players throughout the Memphis area. If you have any questions about the High School program contact High School Director, the MYHL High School Division Director. MYHL announcements and news can be found on our News page. We also have division specific news on our High School News page, Travel Blues News page and Recreation News page. Schedules can be found here also. Please feel free to E-mail us if you have any questions or suggestions. You will find E-mails posted throughout this site for board members, directors for all three divisions of the MYHL and various volunteers handling jobs within our league. Go to our Message Boards if you are looking for equipment or have some to sell. We also would appreciate your feedback here and we are interested in your fundraising ideas. MYHL is a non-profit USA Hockey organization dedicated to the development and promotion of youth hockey in the Greater Memphis area. The MYHL is a member of the Southern Amateur Hockey Association, SAHA, and the Southeastern Amateur Hockey Association, SEAHA, making up the Southeastern District of the United States.
