Memphis Youth Hockey:MYHL Divisions

Memphis Youth Hockey

Select Season:
High School
The High School Division of the Memphis Youth Hockey League started with the 1997-1998 season and is classified as a club sport. It presently has four teams and is open to anyone attending High School in West Tennessee, Eastern Arkansas and Northern Mississippi.

Our four teams High School teams for 2008-2009 are:

Christian Brothers Purple Wave - Tad Carroll, Director
Collierville Dragons - Steve Puckett, Director
Germantown Red Devils - Karla Habben, Director
North Mississippi Monarchs - Tom Rose, Director

North Mississippi and Germantown are 'At-Large' teams that open up the league to high school players not attending schools with their own teams. At the beginning of the season, new 'At Large' players attend a try out and are then drafted by North Mississippi or Germantown.

The High School committee is made up of the following positions:

Division Co-Directors, Ken Chambers and Don Armour
Treasurer, Carolyn Carter
The Four Team Directors (as listed above)

Each High School Team has a Head Coach, Director, Manager, Treasurer and Game Night Coordinator.

Each team can roster thirty players and can dress up to twenty players, including two goaltenders.

Most of our teams are in need of players. We are actively recruiting within the schools to boost our numbers and encourage any hockey player entering high school to try out.

We usually start the high school season with an opening night jamboree which includes skill competitions and short exhibition games. At about the mid season point we have an all-star game with the players chosen by the team coaches. Both of these events are quite popular with the players. The High School Board plans to maintain these as annual events.

The High School Division has the annual Memphis Cup Tournament. Depending upon the availability of ice, this is either a single or double elimination tournament that determines the MYHL High School Divison Champion. The winner of the Memphis Cup and either the tournament runner up or the regular season team champion (if not different) will progress to the Tennessee State Championship playoffs (The Predators Cup Tournament).

The Tennessee State Championship is called The Predators' Cup Tournament and is sponsored by the Nashville Predators. This tournament began after the 1999-2000 season and has grown to include teams from Memphis, Nashville and Knoxville who battle for the state championship. Our own Metro Warriors won the inaugural Predators Cup Championship.

High School Hockey is a great fun to both play and watch as it includes a good cross section of our local high school aged talent. The competition between the high schools is intense and unparalleled.

Recreation - Jr. RiverKings - Mites
The Recreational Division of the Memphis Youth Hockey League serves as the first contact for hockey in the greater Memphis area. We encourage anyone that is interested in hockey to give it a try. The kids that start with our program generally stick with it because its such a great sport and many go on to play throughout high school. Regardless of your skating ability, we will provide you or your children a great experience with hockey. We strive to teach each child sportsmanship, respect and teamwork through this great sport. Our number one goal is that every player and parent has FUN.

To help with new parents in our youngest division (mites), we will rent you all of the equipment that you will need except for skates and personal items. This makes it an inexpensive way to get started and try the sport of hockey.

We would love to have each player start at age 5, but we enroll kids through high school. Roller hockey players starting at any age have found it to be a fairly easy adjustment and have done great in our program.

Our age group breakdown for 2008-2009 is as USA Hockey directs:
Mites: born in 2000 or later
Squirts: born in 1998 - 1999
Peewees: born in 1996 - 1997
Bantams*: born in 1994 - 1995.

*exceptions can be made for older kids.

We typically have three to four teams in each age group. Along with those teams, we have incorporated the youth hockey groups from Tupelo, Mississippi and Little Rock, Arkansas in our program. Each of the Memphis teams makes an overnight trip to each location and the other programs come here to play. These are great family fun weekends.

Once again our biggest focus is on having fun, learning good life lessons and learning the great game of ice hockey. We provide a fun experience for players that want to some day play high school hockey, travel (competitive) hockey or even go to a higher level.

If you would like more information about Recreational hockey please feel free to contact Jack Rogers our Recreational Director. You can E-mail him at jcjrogers@bellsouth.net

Travel-Memphis Blues
The Memphis Blues MYHL competitive Travel Teams , Squirt through Midget, represent the greater Memphis area at the A level of Youth Hockey. The “A” indicating level of play, not age classification. Some of the cities represented in our SAHA league include Atlanta, Nashville, Huntsville, Birmingham and Knoxville.

Our season typically begins in late August with tryouts and runs through early March with League and District tournaments. Several additional tournaments are also played throughout the year and the teams have traveled to St. Louis, Tulsa, Oklahoma City, and Indiana, to name just a few.

We welcome anyone who is interested in playing hockey at a high level to join us at our preseason conditioning skate and tryouts in late August or September. Watch this website for further times and dates for this and it will also be provided in our initial newsletter of the year in August. This is a great opportunity to come see the level of play if you are unsure about your abilities and an opportunity to meet with coaches to learn more about Travel expectations.

Squirts: born in 1998 - 1999
Peewees: born in 1996 - 1997
Bantams*: born in 1994 - 1995.
Midgets: born in 1990 - 1993.

Participation in the Travel program is a wonderful experience on and off the ice for players and their families. The road trips are wonderful bonding sessions for families and loads of fun.

If you think you may be interested in our Travel program but would like more information or have questions, please feel free to contact our travel director.
