Medfield Pack 113: My Site News: Popcorn Fundraiser 2008!

Popcorn Fundraiser 2008!

2008 Popcorn Fundraising Program for Medfield Pack 113

This year since our first pack meeting is after Popcorn sales can start, your den leaders will be distributing the order forms ahead of time to give you a head start!  Tigers will receive theirs at the first Pack meeting.

(If you did not pick up order form sheets at the First Pack meeting or need more,

Go to the "Handouts" section of this website and download one!)

What is it?
Medfield Pack 113 Scouts sell microwave and gourmet popcorn in colorful boxes and tins!

Why do we do this?
The registration fee that was paid to join the pack for the year covers Boys Life magazine, supporting the Boy Scouts of America, and expenses such as renting the Wheelock cafeteria for monthly meetings. However, we have a number of Pack activities that require us to have a bigger budget, and/or charge families a lot for participating in. For example, last time we did a trip to the USS Battleship Massachusetts it cost $40 per person!   And the Blue & Gold dinner costs more than the ticket prices. Our goal again this year is to raise funds and return it back in the form of high quality activities at lower costs.

We also do this to teach the boys the idea of “paying their own way”. Scouts have been fundraising for their packs for decades (maybe you remember Scouts selling garden seeds!) What is great about the popcorn is it’s a fun product that the boys can identify with and talk about enthusiastically. And the activity builds their ability to speak publicly. Finally, you should know that the program returns at least 35cents on every dollar to the pack! Another 25% or more goes to our local Boy Scout council.

This is NOT a mandatory Scout activity. If your family decides to skip this activity, please consider a donation to the Pack to help with our expenses.

When?
Sales can start October 1st, and end October 31st.

Who do we sell to?
Family, friends, relatives, neighbors, co-workers at Mom & Dads work places. Get innovative! Maybe a bank or store will let you set up a table!

SAFETY!
Always sell with an adult. Do not enter houses. Wear your uniform and hat proudly! Don’t tell people your last name. Don’t walk on the lawn; use their driveways and walksways!

How do we sell?
See below for a sample “script”. The Scouts will bring their order form to the customer, say their sales speech, and if the customer wants to buy, collect the money at that time (what this allows you to do is drop the popcorn off in November if they’re not home! In years past, Scouts/parents have experienced that the customer is all of a sudden “never home” when it’s time to collect) The order form shows the products and the Scouts fill in quantity, dollar amounts.  Make sure to collect the money, and checks are payable to Medfield Pack 113.

Sample Script (Smile!)
“Hi, I’m with the local Cub Scouts, Pack 113, and we’re selling popcorn so we can go camping! We have caramel, chocolate, and microwave corn! Here they are on this sheet…”

“They make great holiday presents! You can give them to your teacher, bus-driver, coach, or the mailman! Appetizers for Thanksgiving! They’re great anytime!”

“Thank you very much! Have a nice day!”

Prizes and Contests!
-Every scout who sells any popcorn will receive a patch.
-There are a variety of prizes for you to choose depending on how much you sell: binoculars, game-radio, walkie-talkies, digital camera, tent, electric scooter, or GPS! See the guide we handed out at the First Pack Meeting!
-Raffle for all sellers in our Pack!
        #1 To be announced
        #2 To be announced
        #3 To be announced!
You get 1 entry for the first $100 sold, and 1 entry for each $100 additional!
-Pie in the Face!
Mr. D’Angelo will be your target! You get to push a pie into his face if you’re one of the top 5 sellers of popcorn!

Delivery
-The Scouts deliver their order forms with choice of prize and full payments to their Den leader by November 1st. (All payments must be to “Medfield Pack 113”. If you collected cash, your family writes a check for that amount. It’s also a good idea to photocopy all checks and order forms before handing them in)  Each order form must be accompanied by complete payment.
-The leaders will get the popcorn on Saturday November 22nd and drop it off at the houses of their Scouts
-Scouts drop off the popcorn at their customers! If they’re not home, you can leave their order in a plastic bag in their storm door, door knob, garage, or other safe location!
(Being able to drop off the popcorn on the first delivery?  That's why we collect the money up front!)

Any additional questions? Contact your den leader. Have fun!
