Congratulations Fairfax County Champion of Character Award winners: Matthew Hayes and Barry Leopold
The Champion of Character award is given to honor youth, coaches and parents for extraordinary service in pursuing victory with honor. It shows that despite the headlines of bad sportsmanship in sports that there are many positive examples in our community today.
Matthew supported his team and teammates despite suffering an injury that prevented him from playing for over half of the season. Most players, when finding out their last season in Little League was finished, would have quit the ball field. Matthew did the reverse: he helped out at practices, led the team in the dugout and coached first base while waiting to recover from his broken arm. Matthew recovered in time to play a couple games and participate in the All Star tournament.
Barry has had a sustained run of 10 years coaching, mentoring and guiding MDLL players, coaches and managers. Barry's boundless energy and enthusiasm while teaching and overwhelmingly positive attitude in working with the players have been enjoyed by many a Phillie. A frequent sight at the ballfields is an old player dropping by to check in with Coach Leopold. He has unique talents for motivating our players and has mentored many of our current managers and league principals. Thanks to Barry, MDLL has had a robust training program for our coaches for the past 5 years.
