Championship Game Summary    by Dave Mitchell
The Baltimore Bucs coached by Norman Wesson for the past 5 years finally got over the hump and captured their first crown in 9-man flag-football.

The Bucs scored first on a 20y run by running back Ron Burley giving them early momentum and confidence, not to mention the lead 6-0. Quarterback, John McGraw of the Packers came back substantiating the next drive hitting go to guy, the speedy Charles Smothers to make the game 7-6. The Bucs had plenty of opportunitys blown as they dropped at least 3 potential interceptions they could have ran back for touchdowns. Packer defensive tackle George Cannida was leading the Packer defense with deflaggings and helping them control the line of scrimmage.

Otherwise those highlights, the game stayed between the 20's going into the half and for the third quarter in this hard fought contest. Until on 3rd and long at the Bucs 35 McGraw hit former Buc running back Bryan Carter out of the backfield in the flats. Carter who caught the ball slightly behind him made a good spin move and scampered all the way to paydirt giving the Packers a 13-6 lead.
The Bucs who had found themselves on the shortend of the stick before in hard fought games of this magnitude now faced 8 minutes and a 3rd and long. With confidence and poise Bucs quarterback Mike Fitzgerald stepped back and let the ball go down the right side of the field as William 'Moonie' Blue got up between 2 Packer defenders from 45 yards away in the endzone to bring it in and pulling the Bucs to within a point. The Bucs who seemed foolishly to try for 2 and the lead lined up in the oklahoma wishbone offense, play actioned and failed to convert or even get the ball off as Fitzgerald was sacked.
The Packers then marched down the field and proceded to put the nail in the Bucs coffin with a little over 2 minutes remaining, eating time and yardage in their quest for back-to-back titles. But that would all be twarted when a stingy Buc defense would stop the Pack, forcing them to punt. Mike Randolph would then return the biggest punt of the year or maybe his career as he got behind a huge Bucs return wall made a couple of moves and raced all the way down the left sideline to the Packers 5 yard line before being pushed out of bounds. The Bucs with that surge seemed to look like they were going to pull it out and pull it out they did as on 2nd down they ran a mix direction play and threw backside to open running back Ron Burley who made one move to get passed a Packer defender and up and into the endzone. The Bucs this time converted the extra point when Fitzgerald hit Blue in the back of the endzone for 1 point. Blue however,in his escapation, drew an unsportsmanlike conduct foul tossing the ball at a Packers defensive back who was laying on the ground, thus the Bucs had to kick back at their 25 yard line after the penalty was assessed. The Bucs caught a break on the kickoff as the Packers muffed the ball and started from inside their 30 yard line just outside a minute remaining. The game was earned by the Bucs when they forced the Packers to burn their last 2 timeouts by deflagging their runners in bounds as McGraw tried to work the sidelines. The Packers got to the Bucs 25 yardline and had time for just 2 plays left. Mcgraw, who was pressured by his offensive unit choose not to just give what the Bucs gave him and go for a down and out or try to get a first down and stop the clock as the Buc cornerbacks were playing off
the Packers receivers 10 yards, instead threw 2 shots to the endzone. The last one, a post corner route to Bryan Carter, in all irony which sailed wide over his head and out of the endzone.
The Bucs in their elation and final satisfaction after their game won with overall class as they began speculating this was a sign of many titles to come!
CB Mike Randolph was named the games MVP.

SCORPIONS UPSET COLTS FOR TITLE
In the biggest game of the year between the two teams, what would be more fitting than it come down to last minute drama on the last play of the game that had spectators and players hold their breath as Colts QB Dave Mitchell's pass sailed errantly out of the endzone sealing their fate for the season.

Mitchell and the Colts came out kicking in the first half as Mitchell was 12/16 for 180 yds. and 2 TD's. His first strike came on a 30y scoring strike to Gary Chapman after a 50y connection to Adrien King to set up the play.
After a botched extra point attempt the score remained 6-0. The Colts ensuing kickoff was returned all the way to their own 30y line by Reece Williams, but 2 plays later Colts LB Rob Elliott picked off Davis to set up another Colts drive. The Colts then scored with just a minute to go before the half when Mitchell connected with TE Rob Elliott on a 40y pass to get the Colts to the Scorpions 3, in which Mitchell found his other TE Hue Bibbs on a play action fake to make it 12-0 Colts on top. But the Colts failed to convert their extra point again as the Scorpions blocked the PAT, so the scored remained 12-0.
The Colts kicked the ball out of bounds to the Scorpions 40y line. On the next play, Reece Williams took a halfback option pass and threw back to Scorpions QB Tony Davis to get the Scorpions to the 15y line with only 16 seconds remaining in the half. Two plays later, Davis then hit Noel Duhalney at the 2 who jaunted in for the Scorpions first score as time expired in the half. The Scorpions were thwarted on their extra point also as the game went into halftime 12-6.

Both the Scorpions and Colts put drives together in the 2nd half but were unable to score, until Scorpions QB Tony Davis rolled right and hit Noel Duhalney at the Colts 30y line who somehow made a move and broke open free to paydirt tying the score at 12. On the conversion Davis dropped back severally under pressure and saw a man in the middle of the endzone open. Colts FS Jeremy Paguta came up to knock the ball down instead deflecting it on a line drive ricochet that flew back to the 3y line where an alert Reece Williams snatched it out of the air and walked into the endzone making it Scorpions 13-12.

The Colts then started a drive from their own 10y line to the Scorpions 23, where then penalties killed their drive and a questionable Mitchell to Chapman connection that was called incomplete at the 18y line in which Chapman was called out of bounds after hauling in a diving catch, gave the Scorpions the ball back with just under a minute remaining at their own 38. Colts Captain Dave Mitchell then quietly told his team to let them score, so they could get the ball back as the Green Sting handed it off to RB Reece Williams who raced 60y for the score. The Colts stopped the extra point and were in business after the kickoff at their own 23y line with :29 and 2 TO. Mitchell then hit Chapman on a 25y completion and Elliott and H-back Eric Defelice on another. A roughing the passer penalty also aided in another 15y putting the Colts on the Scorpions 21y line with :02 to go. Unfortunately Mitchell's launch sailed a few yards out of the endzone where 4 would be Colts receivers could only look in disbelief as their Championship hopes also sailed down the drain.

"I really feel like Jim Harbaugh of the '95-'96 Colts when his life on and off the field both synchronized one another and his last second desperation pass to Aaron Bailey in the AFC Championship game didn't convert. Its a bad feeling on the field and in your life when your flying high for months and then it falls down around you. This game just is an epitome of my life this past year, but I have God, the Lord Jesus Christ and a perfectly healthy son Xavious to raise. So, I will go on"..."I made some poor throws the 2nd half and we didn't capitalize when we had opportunities. I also should have prepared better in pre-game on the kicking game that has helped all year. I take responsibility for the loss. I also want to congratulate the Scorpions on a classy win. I did not hear any trash talking on in your face kind of ill-will, to the contrary only humble comments and I appreciate and honor them for that attitude" said Mitchell.

Mitchell is planning to come back this fall, however 7 year teammate and kindred spirit 51 year old Hue Bibbs marked his retirement after the game (2000 Baltimore Sun article), leaving behind a long and lustrous career. The loss puts Mitchell 1-6 in Championships and 0-5 as a starting QB. The win gives former Estillo Viper and Corinthian Tiger Coach/Captain Alvin Booze his first Championship in his first season running the team.

Glen Burnie COLTS 29   Catonsville BOMBERS 26 4(OT)

In one of the longest games in Bulldog Flag-football history (nearly 3 hours), the Colts came out on top the Bombers 29-26 to advance to the league Championship game against the Charm City Scourge.
The Colts came out kicking with QB Dave Mitchell leading a 12 play 82 yard drive in which he was 7 of 9 and capped with a 5y scoring strike to Newman Thompson. The Bombers who had edged the Colts 14-13, 15-6 in earlier contests during the season came right back with a QB Nick Mariner TD of his own to TE Tim Mulligan tieing things 8-8 as both teams made a 2 point conversion. The Colts responded as Mitchell hit Thompson yet again, this time a 40y timing strike to the pylon. The Bombers kept the momentum at even keel and came back yet again with Mariner evening things up before the half at 14 as he hit WR Paul Sellars. The Bombers receiving core stepped it up throughout the game being down their #1 guy in in injured WR Doug Johnson who had plagued the Colts earlier in the season with big scoring plays.
The Colts came out in the 3rd quarter and picked up where they left off as Mitchell hit Gene McGill this time with a 35 yarder to paydirt. The Bombers refused to quite though and responded with Mariner throwing another score to Sellars. Both running games were nulled as Bombers DT Elijah Swartz lead the way and also put alot of pressure on Mitchell. However, Mitchell hit McGill with a big 3rd down pass in the seems from 25y out and the Colts appeared to be heading to the game winning drive as they got into FG position at the Bombers 10y line with the Colts letting the clock wind down calling a TO with just :04 seconds left. Jeremy Palguta came on and kicked what would have been a game winner as time expired but referee Paul Sneeringer rulled the snap and hold a muff which deleted the attempt and sent the game into OVERTIME.
In a Kansas shootout format neither team scored on its first 2 drives, inspite of both teams getting an extra series of downs on roughing the QB penalties. The Colts faked a FG in the second OT, but Mitchells pass sailed over an open Eric Defelice's head. The Bombers took advantage of the opportunity when Mariner hit Sellars to force the Colts to score. Mitchell then miscomunicated with McGill and it looked like the Bombers were advancing as Paul Richards appeared to pick off an erand low pass, but it was overruled a trap and gave the Colts new life as Mitchell used his scrambling abilty and ran it in from 10y out. The Bombers did not score and were then twarted by a Colts defense who played extremely well with Bernard Adams, Jerae Fletcher, and Anthony White on the defensive line. Anthony "Smokey" Workman also made some good plays from his CB position.
The game looked like it was headed into its 5th OT as Mitchell was sacked and the Colts were facing a 4th and goal to go at the Bombers 21y line. The Colts then turned and put their faith into kicker Jeremy Palguta who was automatic in the spring season but struggled this fall due to the timing of poor consistent snaps. However new snapper Elisio "Chief" Feaster put it right on the money and Palguta nailed the kick giving the Colts the win. Frustrated Bombers players could only grumble as they retreated to their sidelines. The Colts players were emotionally spent for the most part in a dramatic game that went back and forth to the wire, only to be succeded by an array of plays and calls that went from extremeties of feelings of defeat to the highs of exuberant elation.

PLAYOFFS

SCORPIONS 14 HITMEN 0

Scorpion QB Brandon Scarborough who was in for the hurting John McGraw, after last weeks Clinton NIT Tournament and the incumbent Dmitri Dickerson, had a 10y run for a TD in the second quarter. Scarborough performed admirably as he did in the 2004-5 Nationals throwing another scoring strike to Noel Duhanley. Scarborough should have had a 300y passing day according to Coach/player Alvin Booze, referring to the several passes that were dropped for scores. The Scorpions pressured an unsettled Hitman QB Corey Goodwin also recorded several sacks. The Hitmen did have their opportunities in Scorpions territory but failed to capitalize on them. Curt Anderson sealed the game with a sack as the Hitmen were pinned back on their 1y line.

BLAZE 12 COLTS 6

The Colts came out firing on their second possession as QB Dave Mitchell threw a curl pass to Gene McGill who in turn lateralled it to Franky Shaikah who then raced 70y for the Colts score. However sure footed kicker Jeremy Palguta missed the PAT which kept the score 6-0. The Colts offense then blew 2 more scoring opportunities deep inside Blaze territory, one time at the 1 yard line before the half, in which they missed 2 FG's. KR Davon Cruz gave the Blaze great field possession on his returns, but the Colts stingy defense kept the inferno in check once again.
With about 7 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter the Colts were once again driving into Blaze territory when Mitchell choose the worst time of the year to throw a bad pass pass as he went to hit TE Rob Elliott in the flat and didn't see CB Corey Shaw which picked off the throw and ran all the way down to the Colts 10y line. Blaze QB Greg Proctor then lofted a score to Mike Rodgers. This also recharged the Blaze and got them back in the game in which on their next possession Proctor lateralled to Mike Rodgers who hit WR Carlton Orem from 25y out to put the Blaze up 12-6. The Colts then got thwarted in the 4th quarter and with under 2 minutes remaining as they dug themselves out a hole from their own 3y line but Mitchell was again picked at the Blaze 40y yet again by Corey Shaw with :39 seconds to go as he tried to hit WR Odell Torrence on a comeback route. Mitchell quoted "I'm the sickest man in America right now" (referring to Jackie Smith via Cowboys v. Steelers SB), "My team played very, very well against a team that averages 30 points a game and it was my fault that we lost"
