Chachi Mueller - Head Varsity Coach & Varsity Pitching Coach

Coach Mueller is returning for his ninth year as the Head Varsity Baseball Coach at Mt. Carmel High School.  He graduated from Mt. Carmel High School in 1996 playing on back-to-back CIF championship teams.  After graduating, Coach Mueller began coaching at Mt. Carmel High School as he attended San Diego State University.  He coached for the Sundevils for 6 seasons, beginning as a Freshman assistant coach and coaching his last two years as the Head JV coach.  After graduating from SDSU with a degree in English, Coach Mueller was accepted into the Teach for America program and began teaching middle school in Phoenix Arizona.  After his two year commitment, Coach Mueller returned to San Diego and began teaching and coaching at Westview High School.  At Westview, Coach Mueller served as the Head JV Coach for 2 seasons and the Head Freshman Coach for 3 seasons.  Coach Mueller has also coached with various travel ball teams in the community.  He is entering his 16th year of high school coaching.  According to Coach Mueller "I am looking forward to working with your young men and am honored to be part of their development."

Keith Johnson - Assistant Varsity Coach & Varsity Hitting Coach

Coach Keith Johnson graduated from Mt. Carmel High School and was recognized as All-San Diego County All-Academic Team in 2004.  He attended San Diego Mesa College in 2006, where he was coached by Kevin Hazlett.  He was awarded All-Pacific Coast Conference Honorable Mention in both his freshman and sophomore years.  Keith played two seasons at Oklahoma Baptist, coached by Bobby Cox, in 2007 and 2008, on athletic and academic scholarships.  Oklahoma Baptist was the #2 ranked team in the nation for four straight weeks in 2008.  That year, Keith led the Bison to the SAC Championship game to put them in the regional tournament.  During the Regional Tournament, Keith hit a game winning home run against Wayland Baptist, then ranked #18 nationally.  He graduated from Oklahoma Baptist University in May of 2008 with a Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Science, emphasis in strength and conditioning.

Jeff Johnson - Assistant Varsity Coach

Coach Jeff Johnson (Papa Johnson) is currently in his fifth season at Mount Carmel High School serving as an assistant coach at the Varsity level.  Amongst his other duties, last season Coach Johnson worked primarily with the catcher's defensive skill progression.

Jeff has spent numerous seasons coaching travel baseball here in Rancho Penasquitos.  Aside from Coach Kyle and Coach Keith, many players coached by Coach Johnson have moved on to play at the collegiate and professional levels.

Jeff brings a multitude of coaching experience to the program and is a great communicator with both young men and adults alike.  Currently, Coach Johnson is working with the San Diego Deacons, a travel ball program in San Deigo.  He is entering his 16th year of coaching.


Jim Scherer - Head JV Coach

Coach Scherer graduated from Mt. Carmel High School in 1997 after playing on one CIF Championship team (1996).  His senior year he was second team All-Palomar league and nominated for Athlete of the Year at Mt. Carmel.  After graduating, Coach Scherer began college at Chapman University where he spent one semester on the baseball team before returning to San Diego where he would get his degree in business from the University of San Diego in 2002.  During his college years he assisted Coach Mueller with the Mt. Carmel Freshman in 2000 and the JV team in 2001 before venturing into the business world full time.  Three years ago, he gave up his financial advisory practice to return to school in pursuit of his teaching credential.  He now teaches in the social science department at Mt. Carmel High School.

Nick Rodieck - Assistant JV Coach

Coach Rodieck graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Communication at the University of California, San Diego in 2009.

Nick was a three year varsity letter at West Hills High School.  In 2003, he was an honorable mention in the Grossmont South Conference.  Also, was named the team's Most Valuable Pitcher.  The same year, West Hills won their first and only league title in school history.  In 2004, Nick made first-team all league and received the team's Most Valuable Player award.

At Mesa College, Nick became the ace of the staff in his sophomore year.  He was named Pitcher of the Year at Mesa, made all-conference honorable mention and Athlete of the Week in 2006.  He recorded an 8-4 record while yielding 18 walks in 100 innings pitched.  He had a 2.90 overall ERA and a 2.55 ERA in the PCC with two complete games.

At UCSD, Nick did a little bit of everything.  He started, came in long relief and closed out some games as well.  In 2007, he was named the Triton's Pitcher of the Year with a 6-1 record and two saves.  He made 21 appearances, a 4.17 ERA, 73.1 innings and allowed only 14 walks during that span.  He helped the Tritons reach the CCAA Championship game with a victory over Chico State.  Also, with that win, the program reached their first ever Regionals in Division II.  Nick and his teammates continued a tradition of winning which helped propel UCSD in 2009 and 2010 by going to the Division II World Series.  UCSD is now considered a Division II baseball powerhouse and ranks in the top 15 in the nation.
