Rich Lorence - 2006 Coach of the Year
Sportsmanship Awards in Spring Soccer and T-Ball
Children who participate in sports are better prepared for life by learning teamwork, sportsmanship and about communication with one another. I feel it is a huge privilege to have children that not only want to participate in youth sports but want me to be involved with their sports and want me to coach. The first thank you for this award is to them. Like any parent, I feel that it is important to be involved in my children's lives, and I am grateful to them for allowing me to spend this time with them.
The next thank you is to Jennifer, my wife. She offers great advice and understanding while I am coaching. She asks questions just like any other parent and gives me a different perspective on games, practices and other matters of the game.
I also have a lot of people who have helped me coach or gave me advice to become a better coach. So many of you are more deserving than I am of this award!! Also, a big thank you to all the parents who have put up with me through great T-Ball, Basketball, Flag Football and Soccer Seasons. You have kept me sane and levelheaded (for the most part) through all of those season and have helped me in so many ways - thank you to all of you.
The Mason City Parks and Recreation staff and volunteers are great people who have alot of hard questions tossed their way. They are there for us and I thank them for all of the support and encouragement.
Finally, the real reason why I coach and the biggest thank you of all goes to all of the young athletes that I have had the pleasure coaching. All of you coached me just as much as I coached you. All of you are winners!! I hope that you will treasure the memories that we have made together as much as I do. This is a very big honor for me to be named the 2006 Coach of the Year. Thank you to everyone who has made this possible.
