New Volunteer Program Information

MCLL has launched a brand new Volunteer Program for the 2010 baseball season. Please read below for some frequently asked questions. Click here to view entire Volunteer Program Packet.

Murphy Canyon Little League is a 100% VOLUNTEER NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION whose mission is to provide our community with a recreational baseball league so that every child may play in a safe and friendly environment.

To keep our program running smoothly, we must rely on YOU, our MCLL families to help run the everyday operations of the league. In order to do this effectively we have launched the MCLL Volunteer Program that requires each family to assist the league by volunteering for a minimum of 8 hours in one of the listed volunteer positions. A Volunteer Program Fee Deposit of $50.00 per family will be charged at the time of registration and will be refunded after a minimum of 8 hours of volunteer service has been logged by your family.

Why does my family have to volunteer?

First and foremost, you should do it for your children. By volunteering you are helping make MCLL a better place to play baseball. When you register your children to play in the league and make a decision not to volunteer your time and talents, you need to understand that your children will notice what you are modeling for them.  Our children are incredibly perceptive and will know that, while you think there is some value in your child's participation, the league activities are not worthy of your own active participation.  You need to decide if that’s one of the messages you want them to take away from the baseball experience.

Murphy Canyon Little League is run 100% by volunteers. Without parent and family volunteers to help with the enormous task of running the league, it falls on only a few volunteers and the league as a whole suffers. Teams may not have enough coaches to help teach the children correctly, games may not have qualified umpires to judge a fair game, the concession stand stays closed and fundraising opportunities for the league are lost. These are just a few ways the league suffers without volunteers to step up and help out, but all lead to the overall decline of a league.

When do we have to volunteer?

As part of supporting your child while he/she participates in MCLL activities, the MCLL Volunteer Program allows you to volunteer your time during activities spanning from pre-season organization through the regular season play. It is easy to say that you work full time or that you have a busy schedule, almost everyone does! MCLL offers a range of positions making it easy to find one that fits your schedule. All volunteer hours must be logged before the 2010 MCLL Closing Day Ceremony.

How much time does volunteering take?

Your volunteer commitment is per family, not per child participating in the program. Each family is expected to volunteer for a minimum of 8 hours during the regular season. You can divide the 8 hours any way that will work for your family. There are some positions including Board Members, Managers and Coaches that require a higher level of commitment, but most volunteer positions are flexible in their time commitments. There is an average of 15-20 games played for each team from March-June. There will be many opportunities to complete the 8 hour commitment.     Regardless of the position, the reward for all volunteers is allowing your children to enjoy the experience of participating in a first rate Little League program while having fun working with other families in our community.

How do I know what I’m signing up for?                                                                                                                                                                                      A detailed description of each position is available on the Murphy Canyon Little League website at www.MurphyCanyonLittleLeague.com.

What positions are available?

The lists of volunteer positions we need to fill during the regular season are listed below. The specific number of volunteers needed in each position is determined once the number of families participating in our program is known.

TEAM VOLUNTEER OPTIONS

LEAGUE VOLUNTEERS OPTIONS
Team Manager  Team CoachesTeam Parent     Team Umpire   Team Scorekeeper  Board Member    League ScorekeeperLeague Umpire    Field CoordinatorsConcession Stand WorkerAuxiliary Committee Member

What if I don’t know how to do any of the jobs?

All volunteer positions have training and support offered by board members. Check the website or contact MCLL Board members at MCLLBoard@MurphyCanyonLittleLeague.com to find out when the training sessions are going to be held so you don’t miss them. It is your responsibility to let the MCLL Board know if you need to be trained.

How do we sign up?

On the player registration form select the position(s) you prefer to volunteer for. During one of the MCLL Walk-up Registration & Verification Days bring the completed 2010 Volunteer Form and supporting documents to turn in. One must be submitted for each person volunteering for MCLL.

How will the MCLL Board verify the hours?

MCLL Volunteer Logs (Bright Pink Binders) are available in each concession stand as well as the score booths. All volunteers are required to sign in and out of the MCLL Volunteer Log and to have it initialed by a league official in order for the volunteer hours to count toward your volunteer service. It is the responsibility of each volunteer to have their volunteer service signed off by a league official at the time of the volunteer service.

When do we get the Volunteer Program Fee refunded?

As soon as a minimum of 8 hours of combined family volunteer time is accumulated. To process the refund, contact the MCLL Board at MCLLBoard@MurphyCanyonLittleLeague.com in writing with the family member’s names and where they worked their volunteer hours. As soon as the hours are verified, your check will be returned to you.

What if our family can’t volunteer?

If you know that your family is unable to meet the MCLL Volunteer Program commitment, you can pay the Volunteer Program Buyout Fee of $50 at the time of registration. This provision will allow families to simply agree to pay the $50 and subsequently avoid any volunteer obligations. You may choose this option during the registration process instead of selecting a category in which to volunteer. If this option is selected, all rights to the Volunteer Program Fee Refund are waived. NO EXCEPTIONS.

 DISTRICT 33 CLINIC

Big Al Coaching Clinic
January 29th and 30th 2010

Big Al District 33 is proud to host the 2010 "Big Al" Coaching Clinic featuring Al Price, formally of the Al & Al team. Al Price is known in Little League Baseball as "Big Al" was part of the "Al and Al" team that were the originators of the "Know Your Baseball" training program, which is the Little League Official Education Program for Managers and Coaches. Al's teaching philosophy comes from decades of experience he has culminated over the years into this comprehensive, easy-to-follow approach to learning the fundamentals of baseball, softball and tee ball. Each component of the program ties together principles of learning that have proven effective time and time again. Al has distilled his knowledge in a way that makes it easy for kids, parents and coaches to learn. Here's how he does it, in a nutshell: All the fundamental skills are clearly identified. Each skill is broken down into a series of simple, straight forward steps presented in a learnable progression. Skills are presented in a creative and motivating manner that is easy for anyone from the novice to the more experienced to follow. Above all, he never forgets that the game is supposed to be active - and fun. Big Al's step-by-step approach has helped both new and experienced coaches build Little League teams with a solid foundation of basic skills. Take advantage of this great, well-planned program: do it for the kids!

We are asking for all members of our local leagues board of directors that have not attended a coach's clinic to please attend this one. D33 requires that all managers and coaches attend both a coaches and a safety clinic every 3 years. Every team must have a coach that has attended a coaches and a safety clinic in 2010 in order to participate in our TOC. These clinic fulfills the D33 coaches? clinic requirement. Parents are welcome to attend as well.

These clinics will be held rain or shine. All participants should wear sneakers and bring a glove (if possible). This is a hands on clinic, but not physically hard. All adults are welcome whether they have a glove or not!

These clinics are free for all coaches, managers, board members in any of our local leagues. If you are not from D33 and would like to attend any of these clinics, please register at the site location on the day of the clinic. A $10.00 registration fee will be collected from non District 33 coaches for the ages 5 thru 12 clinics. A $25.00 registration fee will be collected from non District 33 coaches who attend the Advance Clinic, which includes a Big Al Advanced Instruction Manual.

We are asking everyone from D33 to register on-line if you are planning on attending. Although pre-registration is not mandatory, there are several reasons why we are requesting this; One, it will make your wait in line a lot shorter on the day of the event. Two, it will give us an accurate record of who attended for ASAP requirements. Finally, we would like to have a number, so we can have the right number of volunteers to help with the registration process. Registration closes on 1/28 for the Advance Clinic and 1/29 for the rest of the clinics.
REMEMBER: you must bring your receipt on the day of the clinic to check in.

If you have any questions please contact Ned Kern at
bigpapakern@yahoo.com
