Congratulations National Super 10's for an excellent showing, 2nd place finish, at Sub-District and a Third place finish at District.
The Super 10's fell about 1" short of advancing to the regional tourney Tuesday night in Ville Platte against a scrappy Oakdale team. In a pitchers duel Oakdale took a 3-1 lead into the top of the 6th. Moss Bluff had their number 7-9 hitters up, who had produced in the clutch most of the tourney. Gabe Buxton lead off the inning with a first pitch single in the hole between third and short. Mckenzie Roofner then came up to bat and went down on three straight inside fast balls. Then first year player Bryce Rodriguez, who was getting his first start in the top 9 since sub district, came to the plate and hit a sharp grounder to the pitcher who turned the 1-3 play, but moved Gabe to 2nd. Back to the top we went with Will Underwood at the plate, Will got a piece of the first inside fast ball then on the second inside fast ball he turned on it, but was just a little out front hitting to 3b. The 3rd baseman however mishandled the ball and was not able to complete the play (on a close call at first). So with two out and Bre Doucett at the plate, Bre lead the team with OBP for the all star season, Bre went down quickly 0-2 on a couple of fast ball on the outside half of the plate. Bre then battled back to 3-2, finally the pitcher from Oakdale made a mistake leaving a fastball up on the inner half of the plate, which Bre promptly pulled down the 3rd base line, unfortunately for Moss Bluff the ball was just foul by an 1" or so. Bre went down on a called 3rd strike on the outer portion of the plate that left the top hitter for Moss Bluff on the on-deck circle and the tying run stranded on first. As Moss Bluff's 10 year old tournament season came to an end.
Overall Moss Bluff had a very good tournament season going 7-3 with two wins over the talented Sulphur National team. As a team they batted 0.343 with an OBP of 0.511. Moss Bluff scored 88 runs while allowing 61 runs. 30 of those runs came in two games (12 of the 15 in one inning against Sulphur Cont at Sub and then 15 in a very poor showing against Ville Platte). As a team they committed 35 errors in the 10 games in a 129 chances (for a 73% conversion - not bad for a team of 10 year olds). Between the two main work horses on the mound (Chris Haggard and Conner fontenot) they allowed 22 ER in 42 IP for a 4.71 ERA.
Memorable Moments --
Gabe Buxton diving stab on a line drive down the third base line which he turned into a 5-9-3 double play (yes 9!!!)
Joel Aucoin's catch of a pop fly in foul territory on the fence to help get Chris out of an inning against Sulphur National at district Moss Bluff won 6-4.
Moss Bluff coming back from a 14-3 score to lose 15-10 (but had runners in scoring position with top of order up -- coaches error at 1st and 3rd on the same play ended the game)
Beating Westlake 7-3 and watching Bre snag 3 line drives to LC -- Awesome job.
In same game against Westlake watching Chris snag a line drive between SS and 3rd to kill an inning. And then watching him due it again against Sulphur Amer. which was their last solid hit of the game.
Watching Conner/Bre/Joel turn a 5-4-3 against Oakdale (okay blue called runner on 1st safe, but it sure looked like he was out by a half step)
Watching Chris in his 1st AB in district take Vernon Cent's pitcher to dead center hitting the yellow line on the wall (which ultimately was not ruled a HR)
Watching this team grow from 1st day of practice when we didn't know how to short hop and complete a relay correctly to becoming a very competitive team in district -- thanks guys for a good year!!!!
