BlackCats
"NEVER QUIT, NEVER SURRENDER"
Welcome to the Mayfield Hillcrest Rugby Club Website
The Mayfield Hillcrest Rugby Club (MHRC) 'BlackCats' were established in 1999 as an independent community Club activity with no direct school affiliation. The Club draws from the surrounding Hillcrest area and welcomes all boys under the age of 19, enrolled in High School, to participate and play. We greatly appreciate the continued support of the office of the Mayfield High School Athletic Director and the Mayfield Area Recreation Counsel for supporting this youth sports activity. Thank you!
BlackCats Rugby is dedicated to teaching young men the correct play and ethos of the great sport of rugby. Rugby is the second most played game in the world and is growing rapidly in America! MHRC is a charter member of the Northeast Ohio High School Rugby League and competes in a Spring season against the Member Clubs located throughout Northeastern Ohio, fielding 29 teams. (Avon Lake, Avon, Amherst, Brunswick, Canton, Copely, Coventry, Elyria Catholic, Mayfield/Hillcrest, Medina, Mentor, Midpark, Highland, Hudson, Ignatius, Lakewood, Parma, Shaker, St Edwards, Strongsville, Revere, Westlake)
Rugby is a safe sport. This is evidenced by the fact that this is the fastest growing womens sport in America's highschools. A recent Harvard Medical study indicated that high school rugby produced less significant injuries than football and because of the less severe nature, that the athletes recovered from the injuries more quickly. This is due in large part to the Coaches and the Referees maintaining rigid guidelines ensuring safe practices and game play. Because football players can benefit from the all around fitness required, especially the speed and running conditioning, some college football coaches are recommending that their players play Spring rugby to improve their general athleticism.
Rugby does require extreme fitness and all around athleticism. Each Team fields 15 players and this allows that there are positions for varying sizes of athletes; large and small; faster and not so.... Because every player must be able to pass, run, kick the ball and tackle, rugby players are called the "Special Forces" of sports. The BlackCats motto of "Never quit, Never surrender" speaks to the game's attitude and the desire required to achieve the levels of fitness needed to play; One can never stop trying, never give in and surrender to the struggle of the effort.
Do you have what it takes to play rugby? Practices are every Tuesday and Thursday evenings, beginning at 8:30 PM, at the Mayfield High School Field House located behind the school off Wilson Mills or Lander Rd.
