Rush Memorial Day Soccerfest Fourpeat! |
|
NEWS BRIEF: The Freedom competed in the Rush Memorial Day Soccerfest. The Freedom had won the previous three championships. Virginia Beach has been very good to the girls. They enjoy playing at the tournament and have had many fine matches down there. The tournament has been very relaxing for all the families and coaches and we all enjoy going there every year. The girls put together a nice run of games and came away with a 4-0 record with 13 goals for and 1 against. The Matt Freedom girls have won the tournament over the past four years. Fourpeat! The offense got things going and never stopped. Way to go girls. Congratulations on a well deserved tournament win!
Thank you Rush for a great tournament and thank you to all our opponents for hard fought games.

| Way to go, Five in a row! |
|
FIVE IN A ROW! The Freedom just returned from the Jamestown Cup Memorial Day Tournament, held in Williamsburg, Virginia. The team started off a little slow going down 1-0 in the first game to the Virginia Legacy Phoenix Elite but soon took the lead and was never behind for the rest of the tournament. The girls played hard and came away with all three wins and the championship medals. That makes five straight Memorial Day Championships! The team scored 17 goals and only gave up 2 in the three victories. Thanks to our hosts and opponents for a great tournament. |
| Fall Tournament action |

The Freedom Girls played in the Dulles National Soccer Tournament, August 26-27 2006. The teams played on a new synthetic surface. The team must have loved the surface scoring eight goals in three games and making the finals versus the Herndon Sting. The team could not keep the scoring going and lost 2-0 in final to come away with second for the weekend. Congratulations to the Sting on a well deserved win. Way to go Freedom.
The girls played a rain shortened Labor Day weekend PWSI Invitational Tournament. The team did not fair as well and ended with a 1-2 record and did not play in the finals. The team is looking forward to starting the WAGS Fall 2006 season.

| Freestate Spring Breakout & PWSI Icebreaker Tournaments |
| Freestate Spring Breakout - Freestate on March 18 & 19 - U12 Girls – Potomac Division Schedules and Results - Field Direction Page NEWS BRIEF: The Freedom played in some frigid, and windy weather over the weekend. They started off playing the TSC Thunder Extreme and lost 3-1 to the eventual tournament champions. The girls went on to post a tie and a win to finish 1-1-1 for the weekend. Congratulations to the Extreme on their tournament victory. |
| ICEBREAKER UPDATE - From Quantico, VA: The coaches went over all scenarios on Saturday night after a disappointing set of games on Saturday. The girls were not playing like the Freedom we all know and love. The finals looked absolutely impossible. We had already played two very tough teams in West Windsor Plainsboro Twisters from New Jersey and the Sterling Avalanche. The day ended in a 0-1-1. The other three teams were pretty confident that they could make the finals. The team we played on Sunday could lose and still play in the final game.
All planets aligned for the Freedom on Sunday. They needed a bunch of scenarios to fall just right on Sunday. We needed some help. We could finish 1-1-1 but we needed the first game on Sunday to be a tie. The game did end in a tie… was there hope? There was just a sliver of hope for the girls. We needed to win to win by a score of 2-0. That was no easy task. We were playing a very good team and the team that only needed to score a goal to secure a final game. Could the Freedom score 2 goals? We were able to win the game 3-0 and we secured a place in the final against division one WAGS, PWSI Courage ’93 Red. The final was a nail biter. PWSI is a very strong team that is used to winning. We went toe to toe with them for the first half and were down 0-1 at half. We picked up the intensity in the second half and did finally get one into the net on a set play just outside the box and just over the keeper’s hands.
The game ended in a 1-1 tie and remained 1-1 after the two five minute overtime periods. The game was decided on penalty kicks 3-2. Thanks to PWSI for hosting a great tournament and congratulations on a much deserved win. |

| Freedom finishes with a 1-2 record at the August Cup. Playing in the U13 division, the Freedom girls traveled to Maryland to play in their second preseason tournament of the year. Rain was falling steadily on Saturday morning and the team was just happy to get the game in. The fields were draining well and the girls had little trouble adjusting to the larger ball and wet conditions. The girls played extremely well in the morning game and came away with a 5-1 win over the GRLF Majestics. The afternoon game was a bit less rainy, but the score did not go the girls’ way. The Freedom lost to the SYC Spirit 2-1, but gave them a tough game. The Spirit only gave up that 1 goal going into the finals. The Sunday game went much like the previous as the girls really could not get much going on offense and lost to a scrappy ASC Wildfire team 1-0. It has been a long summer and the girls are getting used to playing 11v11 but look to be turning the corner as league play starts in September. |
| The Freedom Girls played a bit shorthanded at the Cardinal Cup, but still managed to be a finalist after a nail biter semi-final game against the BRYC Pride. Yet another PK shootout to end the game... This time it took eight Freedom girls to step up to the penalty spot. The fifth goal was enough for the victory. I think the parents take it harder than the players. The final did not fall the Freedom's way. The SWYA Freedom look in midseason form. After the final whistle the score was 4-0 in favor of the SWYA Freedom. Thank you to the SWYA Freedom and club for a nice tournament. Congratulations to on your victory. Thanks to all the parents that changed their plans to be there. Thanks to Carly for helping us out. Hope to see you again real soon. Great job girls! Keep working hard and good luck at August Cup. |

| The Freedom did it again. This was our third hard fought victory at the Virginia Beach Memorial Day Tournament. We missed our friends the MSC Mustangs, but they were replaced with a tough CDSA Synergy team from Delaware. The Freedom had a tough semi-final game with the McLean Liberty. We have met a few times over the years and have always enjoyed playing. McLean played very well and both teams really deserved the victory. After going scoreless in regulation and two five minute overtimes, the Freedom were able to get the final two penalty kicks to go in for a 2-1 win in PK's. The final was just as much of a nail bitter. The Synergy tied the score late in the second half and it looked like overtime until a nice passing combination ended in another score for the Freedom and the game ended in a 2-1 score. The Freedom would like to thank our hosts for a nice tournament. We all really look forward to coming to Virginia Beach in May. We would also like to thank all the teams we played Beach FC Surge, Calverton Tornadoes, McLean Liberty and the CDSA Synergy for some terrific soccer and hard fought games by the girls. |
