TWO LADY MATADORS RECEIVE ALL-EAST BAY HONORS

December 23, 2009 – The Bay Area News Group has released the All-East Bay Girls Volleyball Team.  Juliana Stivanicevic received top honors, being named East Bay Player of the year.  Juliana finished the season with 492 kills, 333 digs, 157 blocks and 96 aces.  Mary Diamantidis was chosen to the All-East Bay first team.  She finished with 503 assists and 345 kills along with 186 blocks and 103 aces.

MIRAMONTE’S LADY MATADORS AMAZING SEASON ENDS
After one of the most successful seasons in its history, Miramonte’s playoff run ended with a 3-0 loss to visiting Drake High School last Wednesday. Miramonte finished the season with a record of 26 wins and 3 losses, capturing the DFAL title with a perfect 12-0 record which included a sweep of cross-town rival Campolindo high school.

After being ranked first in the North Coast Sectional (NCS) seeding, Miramonte received a bye in the first round and advanced to the semi-finals of NCS by defeating Sonoma Valley high-school at Miramonte 3-0 (27-25, 25-4, 27-25).  Against the Drake Pirates, Miramonte started slow and fell behind in the first game.  A late rally brought the Lady Matadors close, but they lost the game 22-25.  Miramonte took an early lead in the second game, but Drake took control of the game and won the second game by the same score.  In the last game of the match, Miramonte seemed unable to control Drake’s quick tempo and fell 18-25.  Drake will meet Bishop O’Dowd in the NCS final.

The Miramonte Lady Matadors also finished 1st in the Albany Invitational tournament, finished 3rd in the Northgate Invitational tournament and had six players receive DFAL All-League honors, which included all five graduating seniors.  Juliana Stivanicevic has been named league MVP for the second consecutive year.  Mary Diamantidis was named to the all-league for the third year, including first team honors for the second consecutive year.  Haley Sayres received first-team all-league honors and is on the all-league team for the second year.  Lissa Gilbert and Sarah Vaccarro were both named on the all-league second team, and Michelle Ent received honorable mention.Miramonte was ranked #2 in the Bay Area for most of the school season, behind only San Jose’s Archbishop Mitty High School, which was also ranked as the nation’s number one high school team.

First year head coach Shannon Ross exceeded everyone’s expectations, except perhaps her own.  The animated young coach, who was also a four-year varsity player at Miramonte high school not long ago,  was exceptional in managing a multi-talented team.  Ross will be tuning up her skills as coach of the Xceleration Volleyball Club’s 15s team during the high school offseason, before returning to coach the Lady Matadors again next year.

From the five departing seniors, two are pursuing college volleyball paths:  Juliana Stivanicevic has already committed to play for the California Golden Bears of UC Berkeley, and Mary Diamantidis is in the final stages of securing a spot at Ivy League’s Columbia University.

MIRAMONTE ADVANCES TO NCS SEMI-FINALS WITH WIN OVER SONOMA VALLEY HS

November 14, 2009 -- After receiving a bye in the first round of the NCS playoffs, the Lady Mats met a determined Sonoma Valley High School team as they begin their championship quest.  Sonoma’s Lady Dragons lead early and kept control of most of the first game, reaching game point at 24-23.  Miramonte fought back and great finishes by its “Fantastic Four” frontline secured the first game 27-25.

In the second game, Miramonte took control early and never let up, as Sarah Vaccarro closed out the game with several service winners.  The Lady Mats won that game 25-4.

In the final game of the match, the Dragons kept pace with the lady Mats for the entire game, reaching game point at 25-24.  Consecutive kills be Mary Diamantidis and Juliana Stivanicevic closed out the game, 27-25 and the match for Miramonte.

Miramonte will face the Sir Frances Drake Pirates on Wednesday night at Miramonte for the chance to compete in the NCS final and on to the CIF championships.  The Pirates defeated Campolindo HS 3-0 and are coming to face the team that beat them in the final of the Albany Invitational Tournament.

In the other NCS semi-final, Bishop O’Dowd will visit Analy, who they lost to in the final of the recently completed Northgate tournament.  Both teams advanced to the semi-final round with 3-0 wins at home.

Home court advantage seems to be extremely important in this year’s playoffs.  All four semi-finalists won at home, and all by winning 3-0.

COME CHEER OUR LADY MATS AS THEY TAKE ON THE PIRATES!!!

The Miramonte JV team had their best match of the season, hanging strong and beating the JV Acalanes Dons 15-12 in the third and decisive game.  Read story below, courtesy of Tom Wright. In arguably their most solid performance of the season, and using all of their deep roster, the Miramonte JVs took games one and three of a hotly contested, emotionally charged match with Acalanes at Acalanes.  Each game was settled by only a few points and all featured loads of big hits, tough defense (digs and dives, monster blocks), game winning rallies and crowd pleasing team work.  The match was a true barn burner. Miramonte took the first game with neither team ever leading by more than a handful of points.  Excellent team work and unselfish, steady play characterized the Mats victory.  Game two was much the same but wound up in favor of a strong Acalanes side.  So game three was forced and the girls were playing for all the marbles.  With the visitors'fans cheering on their team, the Mats played like their hair was on fire and stormed to victory 15 to 12 over the host Dons. Congrats on an inspired Mats victory over the rival Dons to Carlyn (what a way to celebrate her 16th birthday!!!!), Bri, Dom, Belinda, Hosanna, Emily, Ashley, Beryl , Hayley, Katie, Kathleen, Dana and coach Bonnie.

NOTHING COMES EASY WHEN RIVALS CLASH:

MIRAMONTE WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL OVERCOMES DOUBLE-VISION, FIRST GAME LOSS, TO DEFEAT CAMPOLINDO 3-1

October 22, 2009 - In a crucial match that has likely decided DFAL’s (Diablo Foothill Athletic League) Division III volleyball champion, the Miramonte Lady Matadors fought back after losing the first game and defeated the Campolindo Lady Cougars 18-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-23 at Campolindo High School in Moraga.

Miramonte Senior Setter and Blocker Mary Diamantidis was poked in the eye during warm-ups and played the entire match with blurred vision.  This didn’t stop Miramonte’s co-captain and court leader from recording 21 assists, 9 kills and 4 blocks.

Campolindo started the game strong and took a commanding 18-11 lead in the first game, with numerous kills from their formidable front row.  6’2” hitter Chandler Moore had three kills in the stretch, while outside hitters  Alex Shurtz and Abbie Noland also recorded kills. Miramonte closed the gap to 23-18, but Campolindo took control and finished the game strong, winning 25-18.  This was the first game that Miramonte has lost in the DFAL league in their ninth match of league play, after winning 8 matches and 24 consecutive games.

The Lady Mats regrouped and came out strong in the second game, taking an early 6-2 lead on consecutive kills by Juliana Stivanicevic, which they never relinquished. The game included several kills by Stivanicevic and an amazing one-handed back-of-the-fist block by Diamantidis of a Campolindo kill with her back to the net!

The third game can only be described as an epic battle.  Diamantidis opened the score for the Lady Mats on a quick set by Sarah Vaccarro, but she missed the very next point on a hitting error. Miramonte took a 2-1 lead on a Diamantidis block, but she herself was blocked two points later.  The game went on like a see-saw, with a barrage of hits by Stivanicevic and Haley Sayres of Miramonte and Alex Shurtz and Noland of Campolindo, blocks by Diamantidis, Kirsten Rutledge and Audrey Breitweiser of Miramonte and Rachel Eberhart and Anisa Smith  of Campolindo and spectacular digs by Miramonte’s Jane Siri and Lissa Gilbert and Camploindo’s amazing Alessandra Neason.  Neither team led by more than two points as the score was tied again at 17-17.  Stivanicevic then delivered an enormous hit past Neason and proceeded to server three service winners for a Miramonte 21-17 lead.  Three consecutive Miramonte errors brought the Cougars back to 21-20, but that’s as close as they would get.    Kills by Michelle Ent and Sayres, in between two hitting errors by Campolindo, sealed the victory for Miramonte 25-21.  That seemed to take the wind from Campolindo’s sails.

Miramonte took control of the fourth game early, building a 5-1 lead on four service winners by Sayres.  Campolindo stormed back and took the lead 9-7 on kills by Alex Shurtz and Noland.  After Miramonte tied the score at 9, the teams exchanged points and the score remained tied at 12-12. On the next point, Campolindo’s Middle Blocker Smith unleashed a tremendous hit.  Miramonte’s Vaccaro lunged at the ball and sent it across the net, winning the point for the Lady Matadors.  Vaccaro then served two winners and the tide shifted back to Miramonte who now led 15-12.  Miramonte continued with momentum and built what seemed to be an insurmountable lead at 21-15, aided by two kills each by Sayres and Stivanicevic.

But Campolindo wasn’t finished.  Libero Alessandra Neason, who defended Miramonte’s attacks with amazing digs all night long, served six consecutive winners to put Campolindo back up in the lead at 22-21.  A kill by Kirsten Rutledge pulled Miramonte even at 22 all, and Miramonte took the lead back at 23-22 after a Campolido hitting error.  After Campolindo called its final timeout, the Cougars Noland came again to the rescue, tying the score at 23-23.

Miramonte then got to match point on a simple ball dump over the net by Stivanicevic, which seemed to freeze the entire Campolindo team.  Miramonte’s defensive co-captain Lissa Gilbert served and after a couple of exchanges, Diamantidis sent a towering back set to Sayres who slammed the ball for the final point of the match.  Stivanicevic had 19 kills for the match, followed by Sayres who recorded 11 kills.  Sarah Vaccarro had 23 assists and 10 digs, and Lissa Gilbert and Jane Siri had 15 and 13 digs respectively.

Miramonte is now 16-1 overall and 9-0 in league play, one victory away from locking the DFAL title.  The Lady Mats are riding on a 16-game winning streak, and this is the first year in recent memory that they have swept their cross-town rivals.

MIRAMONTE DEFEATS DOUGHERTY VALLEY 3-0

October 20, 2009 - The Miramonte Lady Mats continued their winning ways last night, obliterating Dougherty Valley 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-16).  Coach Ross used her entire bench in this match, and everyone performed well.  Haley Sayres continued her excellent serving and offense, serving ten consecutive winners in the third game of the match which the Lady Mats opened with an 11-1 lead.  Isabelle Shapiro also served and dug well, as did Mollie Swan, who played the Libero position in the last game.  Margo Boyd, Maddie Higgins and Sophia Diamantidis all recorded blocks and kills in the front row.

Miramonte is now 15-1, and has a 15 game winning streak!!!

The most crucial match of the season is tomorrow at Campolindo.  All Miramonte students and families are URGED to come to Campolindo cheer our Lady Mats.
