10U Black AAU Team Takes 2nd Place at Hershey Showcase
The Arlington Matrix 10U/5th Grade Black AAU team wrapped up its spring tournament season with an outstanding performance at the U.S. Junior Nationals Hershey Park Showcase, finishing in 2nd place in the 10U bracket.

On Friday, June 29, the team traveled to Hershey, PA to open pool play against the Mid-Atlantic Comets from the Philadelphia area. Against the Comets, the Matrix played tough pressure defense and created many easy opportunities on offense, and finished with a convincing 33-10 victory.

On Saturday morning, the Matrix took on the Lady Divas from Pennsylvania and were able to jump to a commanding lead at the start of the game. The girls battled through a couple of injuries during the game, but were able to cruise to a 53-11 victory thanks to torrid outside shooting. The next game on Saturday was more of the same for the Matrix, as they continued their hot streak, defeating the NJ Shorestars 58-12 behind their trademark fast-break attack and pressure defense.

The team had a long break after their games on Saturday, and the girls and their families were able to enjoy a fun trip to nearby Hershey Park for a full day of rollercoasters, rides, and plenty of sunshine.

On Sunday afternoon, the Matrix faced the Philly Belles, the other undefeated team in their pool, who are headed to the AAU Nationals as the #7 seed in the nation. Unfortunately, the Matrix struggled to adjust to the tougher competition after three easy wins, and had a tough time shooting against the bigger, stronger Belles, and the Matrix fell 43-18.

But the girls had no time to hang their heads, as they had less than one hour to prepare for a rematch with the Comets in the 10U semifinals. The Matrix returned to form, and walked away with a 41-12 victory to earn a spot in the tournament final and a rematch with the Philly Belles later that evening.

The tournament final got off to a worrisome start for the Matrix, as they quickly fell behind by double digits. However, the girls kept playing hard and gradually began to wear down the Belles with their full-court pressure and relentless fast break.

The Matrix put on an exciting run in the second half, taking a one-point lead and prompting the Belles coach to use two timeouts to try to slow the momentum. Unfortunately, the Matrix hit a cold spell from the floor late in the second half, and the Belles were able to use clutch shooting from the field and the foul line to survive with a 44-34 victory.

The Matrix players returned home proud of their performance in finishing in 2nd place in Hershey, and for a very successful spring AAU season.
