Two Matrix Teams Advance to Title Game; 3rd Team Falls One Point Short
Congratulations to our two Matrix teams that have advanced to the Fairfax Stars Summer League championship games tonight – the 11U Black team and the 10U Black team.

Both games are at
8:45 at Lee High School in Springfield.

And in a heartbreaker, the 10U Green team fell one point short of setting up an all Matrix final in the G9-10 division.

11U Black Ties #1 Seed Chantilly at the Buzzer and Wins in Overtime
Despite only having 6 players in a boiling hot gym, the 11U Black team came from 4 points down in the final 31 seconds, tying the game with a bank shot at the buzzer by Lauren Dresser after a steal created by the pressure D of Melissa Hunt and Brooke Rippy.  The overtime was just as tight; with just 20 seconds remaining, Brooke drove down the lane and scored the winning basket on a lay-up.

Congratulations to Coach Kevin Brown’s team and a special thanks to Bill Batdorf for coaching the girls to two great victories this week while coach Brown was on vacation.  In Monday’s first round game, the Matrix 11U Black squad recovered from a 21-6 deficit to take a four point victory.

T
he 11U Black team plays in the Main Gym at Lee High School at 8:45
on Thursday.

10U Black Team Comes From 7 Points Down Late in 2nd Half to Top
Vienna
In a reversal of recent games in which the 10U Black team raced to early leads only to see them slip away in the 2nd half (the team had three 2-point losses, two in OT), the #8 seed Matrix came from 7 points down twice in the second half to prevail 28-27 over the #5 Seed Vienna.

The 10U Black team used full court pressure to close the gap two or three times during the game.  The team was led by Angela “Rip” Mestre’s double-double (17 points and 11 rebounds).  Kate “the Great” Spaeth scored the game winner with 30 seconds to go on a driving lay-up.

The 10U Black team, coached by Jim Butler, plays in the Auxiliary Gym at Lee High School at 8:45 vs. #2 seed Braddock Road.

10U Green Team Battles to Final Buzzer and Falls 1-Point Short in 16-15 Loss to
Braddock Road
The 10U Green team sports the best regular season performance of all 10 Matrix teams as they finished with a 7-4 record.  In a testimony to their grit, they won 5 of their 7 games by 2 points, almost all of the come from behind variety.  One such win came against its sister 10U Matrix Black team in which the Green team pitched a 2nd half shut-out.

So, the 10U Green team wouldn’t have their semi-final game any other way – they fell behind and battled back in a low scoring game marked by their trademark tenacious defense and never-say-die mentality.  In the end, they just couldn’t get the winning shot to drop as they fell to the #2 seeded
Braddock Road squad.

With their two playoff wins, the Green team ended their summer league with a strong 9-5 record.  Jaimie Bleck, assisted by Dan Zachem, coached the 10U Green team to a great season.
