Tuesday, January 6 East Brunswick Middle School Tourney The MAMS Huskies traveled to Churchill Junior High School to participate in the East Brunswick Middle School Wrestling Tournament. Nineteen Huskies took part in the adventure, and twelve Huskies returned to Matawan with medals. The young men of MAMS represented their town, their school, and themselves very well. The Huskies were lead by the leadership of Glen Cross who took 1st place and Chris Hartigan who took 1st place. Impressive on the day was 6th grader Billy Rodriguez who also took 1st place for the Huskies at his weight class. Chris Menture 8th place Monday, February 27 Middle School Season Matawan-Aberdeen Middle School Wrestling Team Ends With a Record Breaking Season!!! This year’s Huskie wrestling team has been no doubt one of the most well-balanced and talented in Matawan History. The middle school wrestling team concluded their season with a record of 14-2, shattering a school record for wins in a season. The only two losses the Huskies suffered this year came by the way of League Champion Long Branch. Much can be said about this team who has come a long way since finishing with a dismal 2 victories in the 2003-2004 season. Matawan also set another team record this year by advancing 10 out of 20 wrestlers to the final round in the league tournament at Hazlet where the Huskies finished in 2nd place. Two Notable performances of the year are awarded to 7th graders Chris Menture, 70 lbs. (15-0) and Zeke Vega, 105 lbs. (16-0). Both wresters finished the season with undefeated records in league matches as well as 1st place honors in the end of year tournament. The Huskies would also like to recognize the following 8th grade wrestlers who have achieved a great deal of success during their three year tenure with the program: Johnny Short, 110 lbs. (15-1), Jordan Long, 115 lbs. (10-1), and Nick Proto, 100 lbs. (13-3) Two other Eighth Graders, who in their first year, contributed greatly to the team was John Kozman, who took third at the league tournament, and Chris Carillo, who took fourth at the league tournament. We would like to wish all 8th grade wrestlers the best of luck in high school and their quest on becoming a New Jersey State Champion!! Ahead af all three Howell Middle schools, Manchester, Southern Regional and Lake Riveria in Brick. Lets take some time and commend the improvement of the middle school team this season. While it has not translated into many wins, the improvement is there.
