Tuesday, February 10 JP Stevens Fights The fights at JP Stevens had four teams. Scotch Planins-Fanwood, Matawan, Summitt and JP Stevens. Matawan Wrestlers dominated their way through the night. Steve Varsanyi, Mike Cunningham, Ryan Berg, Matt Morenz and Malik Gumbs all went 2-0 on the night to pace the Huskies. Going 1-0 for Matawan was Dylan Boettinger, Dave Silverman, Anthony Holliday, Jimmy Alvarez, Hakan Yuksel, Dashaun Allan and Timmy Birch. Tom Barr went 1-1 on the night. This was a much improved showing for the JV team than the last time we went to JP Stevens. Improvement is happening. Monday, February 9 JV's Dominate Don Bosco The JV wrestling team dominated the Don Bosco Ironmen. Winning for the Huskies was Mike Cunningham, Dashaun Allan, Steve Varsanyi, Jimmy Alvarez, Dylan Boettinger, Dan Salib, and Hakan Yuksel won two matches. Tuesday, January 6 Vero wins First Match Against Marlboro, the highlight of the JV bouts was Joe Vero's first period pin. After a takedown, Joe used a half nelson to turn and pin his opponent . That was only one of the 26 JV bouts on the night. Winning by pin were Timmy Birch, Mike Cunningham, Mike Green, Kenny Brown, Tom Barr, Dave Casserly, Anthony Holliday, Malik Gumbs, Francis Palumbo, Jimmy Alvarez, Dave Silverman and Matt Morenz. Steve Varsanyi won by a major decision and Ryan Berg won by decision. The total team score of all the JV bouts was 85-51 in favor of the Huskies. Great job. Wednesday, December 31 Vega shines at the Zoo After a years absence from the mat, Zeke Vega dominated his way through the Brick Memorial Zoo for his first High School tournament championship. He capped his day with a 20 second pin in the finals. Four other Matawan wrestlers made the finals but came away with second place. Tibor Ross, Jimmy Alvarez, Francis Palumbo and Steve Varsanyi. Tibor had a takedown at the buzzer for the win but did not get the call. Several Matawan wrestlers placed. Malik Gumbs, Mike Green, Devon Rust and Matt Morenz placed third. Dylan Boettinger, Deshaun Allan and Timmy Birch placed fourth. Mike Cunningham and Dave Silverman placed 5th each earning two wins on the day. Tuesday, February 17 Jimmy Alvarez takes second at Raritan The Raritan JV tourney has become the toughest JV tourney in the state. Brick Memorial, Southern, Howell, Long Branch, Camden Catholic, Jackson Memorial, Jackson Liberty, Ocean, Wall, CBA, and many other top teams' JV squads are there. Placing in this tourney is a good barometer of future varsity success. Former Matawan wrestlers who placed here were Rob Sousa, Andy DeNardo, Vic Mabin, Jon Santiago, Chris Howley, Andy Mizerak, Sean Carnahan, Nikko Montecillo, Chris Carrillo and Mike Lawrence. Matawan's lone placer was Jimmy Alvarez's second place finish, falling to a southern Wrestler in the Finals. Jimmy won by fall, a 1-0 decision in the semi-finals before losing 7-0 in the finals. Matawan had several wrestlers win matches and make it to the quarterfinals. Some of the brackets had more than 30 wrestlers in them. |
