Former Trojan Wins National Title - Again

Congratulations to David Snider ('06) for capturing the 2011 Canadian Senior Men's badminton championship for the second time. Snider, who spent 4 years in the the Trojan Club program, won his first Senior Men's badminton championship at the age of 18 (Canadian record) in 2008.

As a Trojan, Snider will always be remembered as the Power that delivered a knockout blow to a Westwood player on a hard hit ball to the back row in the WWAC 1/4 finals of 2004. The back row defender suffered no serious injury but the psychological affect on both teams was enough to end Westwood's hopes for a Provincial championship. Vincent Massey went on to play in the MHSAA Final Four, losing to MBCI in a hard fought 5 set battle.

No one will be surprised to see David competing in the Olympics sometime soon. He shows the determination, focus and drive that is required of every champion.

Massey's MacKenzie to Play for Wesmen

Kenny Mackenzie has committed to play for the University of Winnipeg Wesmen Men's Volleyball team for the 2009-2010 volleyball season. McKenzie has been a co-captain on the Trojans team for the past two seasons and has been a pivotal player for the team. He has been selected onto the Manitoba Men’s Provincial Volleyball team for the past three seasons and was named a Manitoba Volleyball Association Graduating All-Star in 2008.

"Kenny is a dynamic middle player who has the athletic ability to succeed at the university level. Along with Matt Schriemer and Devin Schmidt, Kenny is another strong Manitoba athlete we are pleased has selected our university and volleyball program”, added Wesmen Head Coach Larry McKay.

Kenny, a 6'4" middle, has been involved in the Massey Club program as well as the Winman program and the MVA Provincial team program. Massey Alumni Win CIS Championship
Congratulations to Trevor Shaw ('03) and Jon Kasdorf ('05), members of the Winnipeg Wesmen Men's Volleyball team that captured the 2006/2007 CIS Men's Volleyball Championship on Sunday, March 4/07. The #3 ranked Wesmen won the Tantramar Trophy after defeating the #4 Alberta Golden Bears 3-2 (22-25, 25-18, 25-20, 18-25, 15-10) in the Gold Medal match. The Wesmen had also defeated the Golden Bears on the previous weekend at the CanWest Final Four in the Bronze medal match. Click on the headline for all the details.

Massey Alumni Win Gold & Silver CIS Medals

Massey Alumni Mike Derocco (05) and Jon Kasdorf (05) were members of the Gold and Silver medal teams, respectively, at  last weekend's  2008 CIS Men's Volleyball Championships.  Derocco's Alberta Golden Bears defeated Kasdorf's  Winnipeg Wesmen in an exciting 4 set final  (25-17,  23-25,  25-23,  25-20).  The match was a re-match of last year's final that saw the Wesmen come out on top. Kasdorf had an outstanding tournament at the Libero position, finishing 2nd in digs per set and 3rd in total digs, as well as producing superb passing against the best the CIS had to offer. This was the Bear's 7th straight appearance in the final and with Derocco taking over the starting setter role next year we can expect to continue to see Massey Alumni at the CIS championships for a few more years to come. Congratulations to both players on your achievements. We look forward to seeing more of Massey Alumni join your ranks in the future.
