Martin County Swimming: About Us

 Martin County Aquatics is a member of Florida Gold Coast Swimming which consists of 49 swim clubs in Martin, Palm Beach, Broward and Dade counties.   Meets are held throughout the year at different venues hosted by various clubs.  Martin County Aquatics traditionally hosts two meets per year,  one in September and the other in January.  Parents are encouraged to participate and volunteer at meets.

Martin County Aquatics has been teaching children of all ages to swim

competitively since 1973.  Three head coaches have led the team over the years,

including founding coach Gary Shelt (1973 to 1980); coach Dick Wells

(1980 to 1995) and current coach, Jim McCombs.

Jim McCombs - Seniors Head Coach

Coach McCombs graduated from the Milford Area Senior High School in

New Hampshire in 1977.  Coach McCombs competed in club swimming

and also  with the U.S. Army, making the 1980 Olympic Trial Cuts in the 100,

200, 500, and 1650 Freestyle.  Unfortunately, the USA boycotted the 1980

Olympics.  His 30+ year coaching career has taken him from New Hampshire

to Georgia and Florida.  Coach McCombs has been the Head Coach of Martin

County Aquatics  since 1995 and also serves as the Head Coach

of the Martin County High School Swim Team.

 Gordon Laing, Jr. - Juniors Swim Coach

Coach Laing was a member of the swim team at North Plainfield High

School in New Jersey.  He has over 11 years coaching experience and has

been Martin County Aquatic’s Juniors Coach since 2002.  Coach Laing also

serves as the Martin County High School Swim Team Assistant Coach.

   Michael Murray – Diving Coach

Coach Murray participated on the swim and dive teams at Miami

High School and was on the dive team in college at California

State-Fullerton.  Coach Murray has been a USA Diving Coach

since 2009 and is also a Florida High School Athletic Association

(FHSAA) dive coach, serving as Martin County, Jensen Beach and

South Fork High’s dive coach.


Each year, USA Swimming recognizes its members who excel both in the

classroom and in the pool.  The Scholastic All-America Team is made up of high

school student-athletes who have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher and

who have achieved the required time standard in a single event.  Martin County

Aquatics is proud to recognize the below team members who

were named USA Swimming Scholastic All-America Team members:
