The Grays claimed their second league title in three years and advanced to the National AAABA Tournament. The Grays opened the season with six straight wins to establish themselves as contenders early in the season. However, the Grays dropped six of their next nine games and fell back into a cluster of teams battling at the top of the standings. Grays manager Chris Pfeil commented, "We came out of the gate 6-0 and were playing good fundamental baseball. Then we hit a little skid where we were making crucial errors and it caught up to us. All of a sudden we were 9-6." The Grays regained their focus by winning six of their next seven to improve to 15-7. The Grays were beaten by Galliker's 6-4 on June 30 to leave them with a 15-8 mark heading into July. According to Pfeil, "We were definately happy to be in first place heading into July. We felt we were starting to click as a team and thought we had a run in us." The Grays rattled off a 10-game win streak to move to 25-8 and lock up the AAABA League regular season title. The Grays outscored their opponents 74-24 in that stretch. After Delweld broke the win streak, the Grays won the final two regular season games to finish with a 27-9 record, the best in franchise history. "We played at a high level down the stretch, but knew we were going into the playoffs with a target on our backs," Pfeil commented. The Grays swept Galliker's 3-0 in the Best-of-Semifinal Series to earn a trip to the league championship series for the third straight year. It was also the third straight season the Grays swept Galliker's in a playoff series. After splitting the first four games of the AAABA League Championship Series, the Grays and Delweld met in a decisive Game Five on August 4. The Grays defeated Delweld 11-1 to earn a trip to the National AAABA Tournament. Pfeil added, "To get back to the tournament was a great feeling. Once you've been there that is the goal every season. We were real confident that we could make some noise." The Grays quickly showed the rest of the field that they were contenders with a 17-0 opening night pounding of Zanesville. The Grays followed that win up with a 12-5 win over Philadelphia and a 15-0 win over Brooklyn. The Grays became only the second Johnstown team in history to open the tournament 4-0 when they knocked off Livonia. "At that point, there were only three teams left in the tournament. We had a ton of momentum and felt confident that this could be the year," Pfeil said. However, the Grays suffered a disappointing 6-3 loss to New Orleans. The Grays commited eight errors in the game after taking a 3-0 lead. "It was very uncharacteristic of us. We had been playing excellent defense down the stretch. We were disappointed, but knew we were still alive," Pfeil commented. With a trip to the National Championship Game on the line the Grays took on Baltimore. The Grays fell behind 4-1 heading into the bottom of the ninth. The Grays pulled off a dramatic comeback and tied the game 4-4. However, the winning run was thrown out at the plate and the game was sent to extra innnings. Baltimore put up four runs in the 12th inning to end the Grays season. According to Pfeil, "It was probably the most exciting inning for a Johnstown team in the history of the tournament. It came down to a bang-bang play at the plate. If it goes our way we move on to the title game." "It was a tough loss. We really felt we had the best team in the tournament. I was real proud of this group of guys. They battled until the end." Despite a disappointing 13-20 regular the season, the Grays were able to pull together and sweep Gallikers 3-0 in the league semifinals. However, the Grays were unable to defend their 2002 league title, losing to Delweld in the league championship series. Sixth-year manager Chris Pfeil commented, We are real hungry to get back to the national tournament. Sometimes when you lose something it helps you realize how important it is. Scott Goss, 20, will be back for his third season with the Grays. Goss will play first base and bat in the clean-up spot. Goss was a First Team All-AAABA League selection in 2002. Adam Miscik, 20, will handle second base for the Grays in 2004. Miscik is a four-year starter for the Grays and will be called on to provide veteran leadership. Darren Horton, 19, will join the Grays and play shortstop. Horton was a 2003 First Team All State selection at Central High School. Horton will also be used out of the bullpen. Matt Petrowsky and Ben Watkins, both 17, will be competing for playing time at third base. Both are versatile and will see time in both the infield and outfield. Watkins will add depth to the bullpen. Both played in the City Colt League last season. Jordan Rehar, 19, will handle the designated hitter duties. Rehar will be used out of the bullpen and also be called on as a corner man in the infield. Rehar comes to the Grays from Stoystown American Legion. Derek Mechling, 19, comes to the Grays from Homer Center American Legion to handle the catching duties. Mechling will help solidify the middle of the batting order and is a solid defensive catcher. Alex Shroyer, 19, will add depth behind the plate and in the outfield. Shroyer played for Stoystown American Legion last summer. Arek Zambanini, 20, returns for his second year with the Grays. Zambanini will make the move from second base to left field in 2004. Last season, he hit .310 and was named First Team All-AAABA League as a utility player. Jesse Leonard, 20, is back for his second year with the Grays. Leonard brings speed and a strong arm to the Grays outfield. Doug McNulty, 19, joins the Grays from Homer Center American Legion. McNulty will play the outfield and first base for the Grays. He will be called upon to add an offensive punch and to help solidify the bullpen. Ryan Gindlesperger, 20, is back for his second season with the Grays. Gindlesperger played well down the stretch last year and adds speed to the lineup. Pfeil commented, We feel one through nine we will have as strong as a lineup as anyone in the league. We have some guys that can drive the baseball. Our biggest concern will be a lack of speed. The Grays will go with a five man pitching rotation in 2004. All five starters are 20 year-olds and four of them are left-handed. Pfeil added, We have 12 legitimate pitchers we can put on the mound. With the doubleheaders added to the schedule this year, we are going to have to rely on our pitching staff to step it up a notch. Mike Tatarko is back for his second season with the Grays. The 20 year-old left-hander will get the call on opening day. Tatarko is the only returning starter in the rotation. Joe Shrift, 20, will return for his third season with the Grays. The left-handed Shrift has been a key reliever the last two years, but will move into the starting rotation this year. Matt Ogrodnik, 20, comes to the Grays from Kiski Valley American Legion. Ogrodnik is a hard throwing left-hander, with a good mix of breaking pitches. Tim Latham, 20, is the lone right-hander in the starting rotation. Latham played a key role at Potomac State College this spring, helping the Catamounts advance to the Junior College World Series. Brenton Gilmore, 20, comes to the Grays from the Indiana County American Legion. Gilmore, another left-hander, has good movement and velocity on his pitches. Ryan Altimore, 19, will be called on as a right-hander out of the bullpen. Altimore, entering his third season with the Grays, provides valuable experience in relief. Alex Gett, 19, comes to the Grays from the Punxsutawney American Legion. Gett will help solidify the bullpen and will be used as a spot starter. According to Pfeil, There is a competitive balance in the league this year. We are going to have to play at a high intensity level every night. The toughest thing about this league is that you have to come to play every night or you get knocked off. Pfeil added, We have high expectations coming into the season. The goal is to make it to the national tournament. The talent level is there, its just a matter of finding the chemistry and consistency. Pfeil will be assisted by Patrick Hollern, Paul Knupp, and Ray Stenger. Larry Pfeil is the Grays General Manager. Paul Knupp, Sr. serves as the Recruiting Coordinator. The Grays are sponsored by Denny Altimore. 2003 SEASON WRAP-UP August 30, 2003 Despite getting off to the worst start in franchise history, the Johnstown Grays finished strong and earned a trip to the AAABA League Championship Series to defend their 2002 title. However, the Grays were unable to make a return trip to the National Tournament, losing to Delweld, the eventual National Runner-up. The Grays started off the season with a 3-1 win over P&H Architects. The Grays then dropped their next four to fall to 1-4. The Grays split their next eight games to move their record to 5-8. According to manager Chris Pfeil, We really didnt get off to the start that we had hoped. We were making a lot of mental mistakes and leaving a ton of runners in scoring postion. Things did not get better for the Grays as they dropped five consecutive games to put their record at 5-13. On June 26, the Grays learned of the death of former teammate, Matt Eppley. Eppley played for the Grays from 1999-2002 and was a vital part of the 2002 National Tournament team. Pfeil commented, I cant put into words what Matt meant to everyone associated with our organization. It really put things into perspective. It was a real emotional time for this team. We dedicated the remainder of the season to Matt and retired his jersey, which we hung outside the dugout for the rest of the year. The Grays lost their next two games, to extend the losing streak to seven games, putting their record at 5-15. The record was the worst start in franchise history. Pfeil added, We were 0-6 in one-run games at that point and had three more losses by two runs. Everyone was frustrated. We werent doing the little things to win the close games. But, the guys stuck together and were determined to turn the season around. The Grays did just that, starting with consecutive wins over P&H Architects and Gallikers to move to 7-15. Following a loss to Gallikers, the Grays beat P&H Architects and Delweld in a doubleheader to move to 9-16. The Grays split their next eight games to finish the season with a disappointing 13-20 record. The Grays were set to play Gallikers in the AAABA League Semifinals. The series was a rematch of the 2002 Championship Series. The Grays got a complete game, one-hit shutout from Jabbar Brown in Game 1 of the series to help propel them to a three-game sweep of Gallikers. Pfeil commented, We knew down the stretch we were playing our best baseball of the season. We put it all together in the Gallikers series. The players were really focused on getting back to the Championship Series to defend their title. The Grays lost the first game of the series to Delweld 3-1. In Game 2, the Grays overcame a 5-0 deficit to take a 6-5 lead. Delweld put up two runs in the eighth to take a 7-6 lead. The Grays loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the ninth, but were unable to score and fell behind in the series 2-0. Delweld beat the Grays 8-2 to complete the sweep and dethrone the defending champions. Pfeil commented, We let Game 2 slip away from us, which would have swung the momentum of the series our way. But, I was real proud of how this group stuck together all season and battled until the end. It just wasnt meant to be this year. The Grays now look ahead to the 2004 Season. Pfeil said, We have a good nucleus back and we are excited about the incoming recruiting class. Our goal is to make it back to the National Tournament. The Grays went 25-11 last year under manager Chris Pfeil. The Grays defeated Assure Home Equity in the league semifinals and moved on to sweep Gallikers to earn their first ever trip to the National AAABA Tournament. The Grays opened the national tournament with wins over New York, Altoona, and Livonia before falling to Washington, D.C. and New Orleans. According to Pfeil, What we accomplished last year was special. No one really thought we could win the league, let alone make it to the semifinals of the national tournament. However, that is over and we know we are entering the season with a target on our backs. The Grays will begin their title defense on Saturday, May 24, when they take on P&H Architects at the Point Stadium. Game time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Scott Goss, 19, and Dave Livengood, 19, will handle the first base and designated hitter duties for the Grays. Goss, in his second year with the Grays, was named First Team All-AAABA League designated hitter last year. Goss hit .317 and led the league with seven home runs. Livengood will begin his first year with the Grays. Livengood played the last two years for Somerset American Legion. Livengood will be called on to drive in runs. Adam Miscik, 19, returns to play second base in his third season with the Grays. Miscik is sound defensively and is a contact hitter. Miscik hit .291 during his rookie season in 2001. Landon Sinclair, 18, will move in to play shortstop for the Grays. Sinclair is a tremendous athlete and will provide an offensive spark. He played last summer for Ebensburg American Legion. Joe Pichler, 20, a native of Rockville, MD, joins the Grays for his first season and will play third base. Pichler was a First Team NJCAA All-American in 2002 at Montgomery College Germantown. He currently attends St. Vincent College, where he was named First Team American Mideast Conference this spring. Pichler will also be used out of the bullpen. Jesse Leonard, 19, joins the Grays for his first season. Leonard will play both infield and outfield. Leonard will be used as the leadoff man. He played last summer for Richland-Windber American Legion. Arek Zambanini, 19, will begin his first year with the Grays. Zambanini will be used as a utility player. Zambanini played last summer for Stoystown American Legion. Nate Crookshank, 18, and Joe Ostinowsky, 19, will handle the catching duties for the Grays. Crookshank hit .323 last year and was named AAABA League Rookie of the Year. Crookshank will also be used in the outfield. Ostinowsky comes to the Grays from Nanty Glo American Legion. Ostinowsky will be used in the outfield and out of the bullpen. Ryan Kabana, 20, returns for his third season with the Grays and will play centerfield. Kabana hit .352 last year and was named a First Team All-AAABA League outfielder. Kabana will see time as a relief pitcher as well. Steve Schrader, 19, will begin his first year with the Grays. Schrader can hit for power and will play left field. Schrader helped lead Meyersdale High School to the 2002 PIAA Western Finals. Ryan Gindlesperger, 19, comes to the Grays from Richland-Windber American Legion. Gindlesperger is a contact hitter and provides speed to the lineup. Mike Cardamone, 20, is back for his third season with the Grays. Cardamone was the 2001 AAABA League Rookie Pitcher of the Year and has a career record of 5-5 with a 3.33 ERA. Cardamone will get the call on opening night. Scott Riddle, 20, returns for his second season in the Grays rotation. Riddle went 4-2 last year with a 3.94 ERA. Josh Geiser, 20, will begin his second year with the Grays. Geiser went 5-1 last year with a 2.95 ERA and was selected First Team All-AAABA League. Jabbar Brown, 20, returns to the Grays rotation this year. Brown pitched for the Grays in 2000 and 2001, compiling a career record of 4-7 with a 3.83 ERA. He has 71 strikeouts in 71 1/3 innings. Joe Shrift, 19, returns for his second season with the Grays. Shrift made three appearances last summer after rehabbing from an arm injury. Shrift will add depth in the outfield. Ryan Altimore, 18, will begin his second season with the Grays. Altimore made three relief appearances last year and will be used out of the bullpen again this year. Altimore also will be used in the outfield. Mike Tatarko, 19, joins the Grays from Nanty Glo American Legion. Tatarko, a left-hander, will see time as a starter and out of the bullpen. According to Grays manager Chris Pfeil, The league is more balanced this year. Any of the teams is capable of winning the league and going to the tournament. Also, the addition of the inter-league games with Altoona should make things a little more interesting. Pfeil added, Our goal is to make it back to the national tournament and take the next step. We feel we have the talent, but the key will be whether we can stay focused and play consistent all season. Pfeil will be assisted by Paul Knupp, Ray Stenger, and Chris Zakraysek. Larry Pfeil is the Grays General Manager. The Grays are sponsored by Denny Altimore. 2002 SEASON WRAP-UP August 15, 2002 After four years in the Johnstown AAABA League, the Johnstown Grays won their first ever league championship and advanced to the National AAABA Tournament. The Grays entered the season picked by few to win the league title. However, the Grays jumped out of the gate quickly and went wire-to-wire in first place to earn their first championship. The Grays opened the season with a three game sweep of Assure Home Equity. Then the Grays took two of three from Galliker's and split a pair with Delweld to start off 6-2. According to Grays' manager Chris Pfeil, "Getting off to a quick start was huge for our confidence. We won a couple of tight games and our players started to really believe in one another." The Grays took two of three from both Delweld and Assure and split two games with Galliker's to move to 11-5. After beating Assure and Delweld, the Grays moved to 13-5 and had a two-game lead over Galliker's for first place. However, Galliker's laid an embarassing 13-1 loss on the Grays to move within one game. Pfeil commented, "I think that game served as a wake-up call for us. Our guys stuck together and used it for motivation the rest of the way." The Grays knocked off Assure twice to move to 15-6, setting up a showdown with Galliker's. Despite trailing Galliker's 5-1 going into the final inning, the Grays managed to rally to tie the game. With two strikes, Steve Siembak laid down a squeeze bunt to force home the go-ahead run. The Grays held on in the bottom of the seventh for the win and knocked off Galliker's the following night, 2-1, to move to 17-6. Pfeil said, "That absoulutely was the turning point of the season. We took a chance on the squeeze and it worked. From then on out, our guys believed that nothing was going to stop them from winning the league." Coming off the emotinal series, the Grays dropped two of three to Delweld to stand at 18-8. The Grays quickly regrouped and realed off seven straight wins to clinch their first ever regular season title. The Grays dropped their final three games of the season to finish the year at 25-11, setting up a semifinal series with Assure Home Equity. Assure stunned the Grays in the opening game, knocking them off 7-3 to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-5 series. Pfeil commented, "They definately caught us off guard. I told our guys that is was a long series and they needed to respond." The Grays did respond, winning three straight by the scores of 16-5, 7-2, and 8-3 to set up a showdown with two-time defending champion Galliker's for the league championship. The Grays took game one of the best-of-5 series with a 9-3 win. The Grays took game two of the series 5-2 to move within one game of a berth in the national tournament. With Galliker's leading 4-3 going into the bottom of the ninth, the Grays tried to mount one last rally. Steve Siembak led off with a single. Jeremy Shaffer pinch ran for him. Chris Minarcin sacrificed Shaffer to second. Chad Kamler's pinch hit single moved Shaffer to third. Jason Wos pinch ran for Kamler. Ryan Unger singled home Shaffer to tie the game and moved Wos to second with one out. Ryan Miscik grounded to short, but Ryan Unger broke up the double play, causing the throw to first to sail wide. Jason Wos hustled home from second to punch the Grays ticket to the 2002 National Tournament. Pfeil said, "It was an unbelieveable feeling for everyone involved in the franchise. Our kids battled and persevered all year and it paid off with a trip to the tournament." However, the Grays weren't satisfied with just making the tournament. Pfeil added, "We really felt confident that we could go a long way." The Grays did just that by winning the tournament opener 2-0 against New York. The Grays fell 5-3 in a hard fought game to end their season with a 34-14 record. Pfeil commented, "I think that eveyone in our organization will look back on this season and be real proud of what we accomplished not only by winning the league, but also by making it to the final four in the national tournament." The Grays will now look ahead to defending their league title in 2003. Pfeil said, "We will return 10 players next year that will provide us with a strong nucleus. Ryan Altimore, 17, will begin his first season in the Johnstown AAABA League. Altimore comes to the Grays from Hoops in the City Colt League. Altimore will add depth to the bullpen. According to Grays manager Chris Pfeil, There is a great deal of talent in the league this year. Every team has a good pitching and depth. I think the team that plays most consistently during the summer will put themselves in the best position to win the league. Pfeil added, We ended last season with a bad taste. Our guys are focused on what we want to accomplish. The key for us is to keep the focus each night and build momentum for the playoffs. Our goal is to represent Johnstown in the national tournament. Pfeil will be assisted by Paul Knupp, Ray Stenger, and Chris Zakraysek. Larry Pfeil is the Grays General Manager. The Grays are sponsored by Denny Altimore. 2001 SEASON WRAP-UP August 20, 2001 The 2001 season will be remembered as the year the Johnstown Grays established themselves as one of the elite teams in the Johnstown AAABA League. The season began with high expectations as the Grays returned 11 players from their 2000 squad that only missed the playoffs by one game. The Grays began the season with a dramatic 5-4 win over Assure, scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh. They split the final two games to start the season at 2-1. The Grays moved to 4-1 with two wins over Harbrack, but lost catcher Pete Vuckovich for the season with a torn MCL in a collision at home plate. The Grays went on a four game losing streak to stand at 4-5. The Grays regrouped to win five of their next six games to move to 9-6. They dropped two to Assure and beat Harbrack twice to move to 11-8. The Grays went on a five game losing streak to fall to 11-13. They only managed four runs in the five games. According to Grays' manager Chris Pfeil, "At that point, a lot of people were writing us off. I give the players all the credit in the world because they battled out of the slump and were able to turn the whole season around." The Grays did just that, reeling off six straight wins to move into third place with a 17-13 record. In the six games, the Grays offense came alive to score 56 runs. Pfeil commented, "Once we started getting a few hits to fall, our guys started swinging with confidence again. The whole lineup came alive." The Grays dropped two one-run games to fall to 17-15. They split a pair of games with Delweld and beat the Galleria to finish the regular season in third place with a 19-16 record. The Grays were set to began a much anticipated playoff series with second place Delweld. The two teams provided one of the most exciting playoff series in recent history. The Grays took the first game 10-2. Delweld scored a run in the top of the ninth to force extra innings and beat the Grays 5-3 in the second game. The Grays moved one game away from the championship series with another 10-2 win in Game 3. However, Delweld won the last two games of the series to end the Grays season. Pfeil said, "It was an unbelievable series. Both teams played great baseball, and unfortunately we came up short. The key to the series was our inability to hold the lead in Game 2." The Grays will lose six players from their 2001 team. Brian Cence, Matt Kozusko, Jason Merriman, Matt Perry, Kerry Pfeil, and Pete Vuckovich were all 20 years old. Pfeil commented, "They were all tremendous assets to this team. They provided the leadership and were the reason we were so successful. Brian and Matt joined the team this year and provided us a big lift. Jason played for us the last two years and was one of the top pitchers in the league. Pete was with us for three years and anchored our defense. His injury this year was a big blow to us. I coached Kerry and Matt for six years, since the Colt League. Seeing them leave us is real hard and it will be strange not having them next year. Both of them gave us 100 percent every time they crossed the line." The Grays now look ahead to the 2002 season, expected to be one of the favorites to represent Johnstown in the National AAABA Tournament. "We feel we have a great nucleus back. If we can sign a few key players we think we have a chance to take the next step." GRAYS NOTES: The Johnstown Grays had five players selected to the All AAABA League Team: Matt Perry (2B), Ryan Miscik (SS), Ryan Unger (OF), Steve Siembak (DH), and Kip Watkins (P). Hopefully our guys will take that experience and build off of it for this season." The Grays open the 2000 season with a three game series against Harbrack State. They will open up on May 23 at 6:00 p.m. at UPJ. Pfeil commented, "We are hoping to get off to a quick start and build off it the entire season. The league is solid from top to bottom, so we have to be prepared every night. The Grays will call on Greg Holtz, 20, and Jason Wos, 19, at first base. Holtz has had a solid AAABA League career and brings experience to the lineup. He will also be used in the designated hitter role and on the mound in relief. Wos adds an offensive spark and speed to the team. He played last year in the American Legion for Conemaugh Valley. Wos also can play the outfield and catch. Matt Hull (SS) and Matt Perry (2B) return to anchor the middle infield. Hull, 20, returns as the leading run scorer (18) and was second on the team with 13 RBI. Perry, 19, hit .304 last year and had a .944 fielding average. Both are sound defensive players and are a solid double play combination. Kerry Pfeil, 19, and Steve Siembak, 18, both return as valuable utility men for the Grays. Pfeil can play all nine positions and will allow flexibility in the lineup. Siembak is a big bat and can play third base and will see time in the outfield. Both will me major contributors on the pitching staff. Matt Eppley, 18, will handle the hot corner for the Grays in 2000. Eppley is explosive at the plate and will be counted on to spark the offense. He also has experience in the outfield. Drew Waligora, 17, will add depth at third base. Waligora provides power from the left side of the plate and will also see time at designated hitter and on the mound in his rookie season. The Grays return both of their catchers from last year. Pete Vuckovich, 19, is a solid defensive player and controls the pitching staff of the Grays. He will be called on to drive in runs at the plate. Tim Regan, 18, had a solid rookie year last season. Regan is developing into a solid catcher and has good strength at the plate. The outfield will be anchored by Ryan Unger in centerfield. Unger, 18, has great speed and controls the outfield well. He came on to provide a late season spark last year and hit .302 with 12 RBI for the season. John Bradley, 20, will make the move from third base to the outfield. Bradley led the team with 14 RBI last season. He is a big threat at the plate and has tremendous speed. He will also see time as a designated hitter and is a starting pitcher. Liren Hardison, 19, comes to the Grays from Conemaugh Valley American Legion. Hardison has a rifle from the outfield and has good speed. He will also be used out of the bullpen. Jarod Latch, 19, returns for his third AAABA season. Latch hit over .300 last year for the Grays. He is a solid contact hitter and is sound defensively. Dave Holtz, 18, will also by battling for time in the outfield. Holtz is a solid left handed stick and will be a huge contributor on the mound. Tyler Maluchnik, 17, is a tough out from the left side. Maluchnik will provide speed off of the bench and will be counted on to contribute in his rookie season. He will also see time out of the bullpen. The Grays will call on Jason Merriman, 19, to throw opening day. Merriman is a hard thrower, who was 8-0 for Conemaugh Valley Legion last year. He has a good arsenal of breaking pitches that keeps hitters guessing at the plate. Donnie Miller, 20, played the last two seasons for Sani-Dairy. Miller will throw the second game of the season. Miller keeps hitters off balance and brings playoff experience to the staff. Jabbar Brown, 17, will also be in the starting rotation. Brown was named Honarable Mention All-State last year as a sophomore for Bishop McCort and is considered one of the best pitchers in the area. According to Grays' manager Chris Pfeil, "I'm really excited about this group of guys. I feel we have good team chemistry and are focused on our goal of reaching the playoffs." Pfeil added, "The strength of this team is definately the speed. We should be able to keep opposing defenses off balance with the amount of speed we have. Defensively, we feel we are going to be able to cover a lot of ground and take pressure off of our pitchers." The Grays also will rely on their depth. Pfeil said, "From top to bottom we have guys that can play the game. Each player knows their role and as long as they contribute when we call on them, we will win our share of games." Pfeil will be assisted by Brian Gennett, Pat Hollern, and Chris Zakraysek. Larry Pfeil is the General Manager of the Grays. The Johnstown Grays are sponsored by Denny Altimore and Dr. Thomas and Debbie Cardellino. 2000 SEASON WRAP-UP August 1, 2000 The 2000 season will be looked back on as a springboard to the future for the Johnstown Grays. Despite a slow start, the Grays were part of one of the best playoff races in league history. The Grays started off the season by beating Harbrack twice. Then, Galliker's swept the Grays, leaving the Grays' record at 2-3. The Grays took four of their next five games before dropping two to Seward VFW to leave them at 6-6. After knocking off the Galleria twice, the Grays split games with Delweld, Harbrack, and Assure to put their record at 11-9. According to Grays' manager Chris Pfeil, "We knew at that point we were at the crossroads of our season. We knew we would have to start playing more consistantly to make a run at the playoffs." The Grays started their post season run with a come from behind, 3-2, win over Galliker's. After knocking off the Galleria, the Grays pulled off two dramatic wins over Wise Trailer Sales to push their record to 15-9. The Grays swept a two game set with Assure and knocked off Delweld to put their record at 18-9. Pfeil said, "Our guys put it all on the line. We played solid baseball and got a few breaks, and the next thing you know we were in control of our own playoff destiny." However, the Grays collapsed the last week of the season. The Grays lost six of seven to fall just short of the playoffs. Pfeil commented, " I think it was a combination of things. We were on such an emotional roller coaster ride and when things started going bad, they went real bad. The schedule down the stretch was not to our advantage. We played eight games against the playoff teams in six days. We just ran out of gas." The Grays finished their second season with a record of 20-15. Pfeil added, "I'm proud of our guys. We're all disappointed we missed the playoffs. All we wanted was a chance to control our own destiny at the end and we got it. We just came up a little short. We really closed the gap this season and proved we are going to be a title contender in this league for a long time." The Grays will lose four players from their 2000 squad. Greg Holtz, John Bradley, Matt Hull, and Donnie Miller all were 20 years old. Pfeil noted, "They will all be missed. They've done so much for this franchise and I want to thank them for having the faith in us when we were just getting started. They played major roles in laying the foundation for the future. I just wish they would have gotten a chance to reap some of the rewards." The Grays will now look ahead to the 2001 season. "There's no time off. The recruiting war is just beginning. We have a great group returning and if we can sign a few key players we expect to be there at the end next year," Pfeil said.
