Last Significant Update: 11-07-09

Welcome to the Top Hat/Goodfellows Pizzeria & Pub Softball team website. We are a group of guys from the Marion/Morrow/Richland county area in North Central Ohio that enjoy playing competitive softball. We have competed in three of the four major affiliations of softball (NSA, ASA, USSSA and ISA).
In League play for the 2008 season, we finished first in our first year in the Tuesday night Ashland league at Brookside Park with a perfect record of 25-0. It is unlikely we will return to play in this league for the 2009 season.
In tournament ball during the 2008 season our final record stood at 44-13 on the year which included a USSSA Northern Tavern state championship and the ASA B/C Bud Bash title. In addition, we finished a respectable third place in the highly competitive NSA C regional in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Our overall record for 2008 was 69-13. Finally, we would like to thank you for stopping by and/or particpating in our various fundraising activities and wish you good luck. Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers and endorse our sponsors, who, without them we wouldn't be able to play as frequently. Also, utilize our links page to research any/all tournament information.

Coors Light/Custom Siding runner-up in NSA Grand Slam Qualifier (06-02-03)

COLUMBUS- Playing in only their second tournament of the young 2003 season, Coors Light netted runner-up honors in the second leg of an NSA "B" grand slam qualifier held at Berliner Park in Columbus. The Silver Bullets compiled a 4-2 record with the second place finish.
Coors Light began tournament play against Square News of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Silver Bullets got off to a good start and grabbed an early lead in the top of the first scoring five runs for a 5-1 score after one inning of play. Coors Light scored two more runs in the third inning to extended their lead to six. After holding Coors Light scoreless, Square News cut into the Silver Bullets lead by scoring three runs in the bottom half of the fourth for a 7-4 score. Square News again held Coors Light scoreless in the fifth inning and managed to score a single run to make the score 7-5 after five. The Silver Bullets then struck for three runs in the top of the sixth and two in the seventh meanwhile holding Square News to a single run for what appeared to be a comfortable six run lead entering the bottom of the seventh inning with the score at 12-6. It wasn't enough however, as Square News scored seven runs without making an out in the bottom of the seventh and sent Coors Light to the loser's bracket off a three run walk off homer.
The Silver Bullets next faced Club 185 of Columbus in their first losers bracket game. Club 185 jumped out to 4-0 lead in the top of the first but Coors Light came right back by scoring five of their own in the bottom half. Club 185 scored three runs in the second to reclaim the lead and extended it by scoring a single run in the third inning. After a scoreless second inning, the Silver Bullets scored five runs in the bottom of the third for a 10-8 lead after three complete innings. In the fourth, Club 185 added five runs to take the lead one final time but it didn't last long as Coors Light also scored five runs for a 15-13 score after four complete innings and took the lead for good. The Silver Bullets held Club 185 scoreless the remainder of the game and went on to win 23-13.
Advancing in the loser's bracket Coors Light next took on Budweiser of Columbus. Budweiser started hot in the top of the first scoring six runs but the Silver Bullets were hotter as they scored sixteen runs in the bottom half for a 16-6 score. Budweiser scored five runs to cut into the deficit and held Coors Light to an "egg" to make the score 16-11 after two complete innings. The Silver Bullets returned the favor in the top of the third holding Budweiser scoreless and then proceeded to blow the game open by exploding for thirteen runs in the bottom of the third and advanced with a 29-18 triumph.
The victory over Budweiser set up a rematch with Square News with Coors Light looking to get a small measure of revenge. The Silver Bullets did just that jumping out to a 9-0 lead after one inning and didn't look back enroute to a 21-11 victory.
Down to the last three teams, Coors Light next faced Twohig III of Cleveland in the loser's bracket title game. With the hammer, the Silver Bullets held Twohig III scoreless and built and early lead in the bottom of the first scoring four runs. Twohig III however, erupted for ten runs in the top of the second inning and one in the top of the third inning while holding Coors Light scoreless in the bottom half of the second for a 11-4 score entering the bottom of the third stanza. The Silver Bullets plated four runs to cut into Twohig III's lead for a 11-8 score after three complete. Coors Light scored seven in the fourth to reclaim the lead while holding Twohig III to an scoreless for a 15-11 score after five complete. Twohig III evened matters at fifteen all in the top of the fifth scoring four runs and again holding the Silver Bullets scoreless. Coors Light took a two run lead in the bottom of the sixth and was enough for the win but not without some defensive heroics in the top of the seventh. With two outs, a runner on second and a home run to use, Twohig III's number two batter belted a shot to right field where Eric Workman made a spectacular over-the-fence catch to rob a home run. The grab by Workman sealed the victory for Coors Light and advanced to the championship game.
In the championship, the Silver Bullets faced R & D Softball based out of Lima. Coors Light struck first scoring five in the top of the first but R & D Softball countered with six runs for a 6-5 score after one complete inning. The Silver Bullets however, couldn't keep their good fortunes rolling as R & D Softball scored in every inning and the Silver Bullets couldn't keep up. The end result was a 19-9 defeat and a runner-up finish.

Another disappointing ending

PANAMA CITY BEACH, FL- The result was the same only the venue was different. Competing in the 2009 WSL C North American Championship at Frank Brown Park in Panama City Beach, Florida Top Hat/Goodfellows Pub ended with an 0-2 finish. The Wise Guys dropped their tournament opener to HH Softball of Tennessee 20-10. Top Hat/Goodfellows Pub led 6-5 after three innings before a nine run uprising by HH Softball put the Wise Guys away. Ian Craze paced Top Hat/Goodfellows Pub with three hits and three RBI. In the loser's bracket the Wise Guys faced EAP of Cincinnati. Playing in a steady rain and sloppy field conditions Top Hat/Goodfellows struggled offensively losing 14-5. Scott Carr was the only bright spot for the Wise Guys with three hits in the loss. Top Hat/Goodfellows Pub conclude the 2009 season with an overall record of 65-30.

Top Hat/Goodfellows Pub 3-2 at ASA C East Nationals

doug1-09
Doug Virden blasts a double versus EMR/Plant Detail.
COLUMBUS- You could call it A Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Top Hat/Goodfellows Pub struggled with inconsistent play over the weekend in the ASA C East Nationals scoring as many as twenty-nine runs to as little as four. Despite the difference in play, the Wise Guys avoided a repeat of last year's 0-2 finish in Virginia and managed to finish a respectable 13th place with a 3-2 record. Forty-eight teams from the eastern half of the United States traveled to Berliner Park in Columbus for a chance to play in the ASA National Championship in Oklahoma City next month.
Top Hat/Goodfellows Pub began tournament play Friday evening with a matchup versus National Gold/RAC of Rhode Island. The Wise Guys held a 5-1 lead after four innings of play and that's when the bottom fell out. National Gold/RAC erupted for ten in the fifth and thirteen more in the seventh to whip Top Hat/Goodfellows Pub 24-8. Eric Workman had three hits while Tito Workman cranked a pair of homers to go with five RBI in the loss.
The Wise Guys returned to Berliner Park Saturday afternoon with a loser's bracket clash with EMR/Plant Detail of Cincinnati. Lethargic play continued as Top Hat/Goodfellows managed to squeak out an 8-5 victory. Doug Virden led the way with three hits. Jeremy Barker and Tito Workman each collected three RBI in the win.
Moving on the Wise Guys faced Steve's Sports/Canman Carting of Connecticut. It was in this game that the bats finally came alive for Top Hat/Goodfellows Pub as they crushed Steve's Sports/Canman Carting 20-5. Scott Carr, Jeremy Barker and Eric Workman paced the Wise Guys with three hits each. Ian Craze, Barker and Workman drove in three runs in the victory.
Top Hat/Goodfellows Pub next faced HH/A & J Construction of Indiana and continued their hot hitting ways. The Wise Guys rode the momentum of a thirteen run first inning to a 29-5 demolition of HH/A & J Construction. Ian Craze and Eric Workman led the charge with four hits each. Scott Carr, Jeremy Litteral, Mike O'Neil and Tito Workman followed with three hits each. E. Workman drove in a game high seven runs. Cory Moore contributed with six RBI while Jeremy Barker batted in four.
Down to the sweet 16 Top Hat/Goodfellows Pub faced A Plus Appraisal of Cleveland in a Sunday morning contest. Unfortunately, the Wise Guys saved their worst for last by dropping an 18-4 decision to A Plus Appraisal. Top Hat/Goodfellows Pub batted a horrendous .304 in the defeat.
Top Hat/Goodfellows Pub will conclude their 2009 season this weekend with a trip to Panama City, Florida to compete in the WSL C North American Championships. The tournament will be streamed live over the internet by Softball Kingdom. 2009 Mansfield World Series Champions
MANSFIELD- Top Hat/Goodfellows Pub lived up to the hype and took top honors in the 31st annual Mansfield World Series held at Cyclops Circle last weekend. Winning the championship was expected by many but earning it wasn't easy. 16 of the Mansfield area's best softball teams competed in this annual event.
The Wise Guys opened tournament action against Mullins Tavern. After Mullins Tavern built a 7-0 lead after half inning of play, Top Hat/Goodfellows Pub put up 22 runs in the bottom half of the first to squash any hopes of an upset enroute to a 36-21 triumph. Scott Carr led the hit parade with five hits. Tito Workman followed with four hits while Cory Moore, Jeremy Barker and Jeremy Litteral each banged three hits. Carr and T. Workman each batted in seven runs followed by Jeremy Barker (5), Josh Wickline (4), Kenny Berkshire (4), Cory Moore (3) and Eric Workman (3).
In the second round versus Willard Main St. Carryout the Wise Guys jumped out to an 11-2 lead after two innings and cruised to a 16-8 win. Eric Workman led the way with four hits including a pair of homers and seven RBI. Jeremy Litteral and Doug Virden each smacked three hits. Virden collected three RBI in the win.
In the winners bracket semi finals Top Hat/Goodfellows Pub faced Joez Lounge/Shag-A-Lee's. Trailing 8-6 after three innings the Wise Guys used a nine run outburst in the top of the fourth to take control and go on to a 22-12 victory.     Fluff & Ed's Restaurant emerged from the losers bracket for another crack at Top Hat/Goodfellows Pub for the championship. Fluff & Ed's Restaurant wasn't ready to relinquish the title as they downed the Wise Guys 14-10 to force the winner take all "if" game. Doug Virden and Mike O'Neil stroked three hits while Eric Workman drove in three runs in the setback.
In the championship game both teams traded punches until the last inning. Clinging to a 21-19 lead, Top Hat/Goodfellows Pub used a seven run uprising in the top of the seventh and held off a late rally to outlast Fluff & Ed's Restaurant in a 28-24 slugfest to win the championship. Jeremy Litteral carried the hot stick for the Wise Guys with five hits followed by Doug Virden with four hits. Ian Craze, Cory Moore, Scott Carr, Jeremy Barker, Tito Workman and Eric Workman each cracked three hits. Virden cranked a pair of dingers to with six RBI. Buck Workman fires a throw to second as Cory Moore looks on.
MAPLE HEIGHTS- Top Hat/Goodfellows Pub returned to Stafford Park in Maple Heights to try and repeat their success from the last time they played there back in June. Unfortunately, there was no happy ending this time around as the Wise Guys went 3-2 to finish in third place. Seven teams competed in this WSL B/C qualifier.
Things got off to a great start for Top Hat/Goodfellows Pub with an opening round thumping of Dina's 24-11. Doug Virden and John Stuart led the charge with four hits each. Cory Moore, Buck Workman, Jeremy Barker, Jeremy Litteral and Eric Workman followed with three hits. B. Workman collected five RBI while Moore, Barker and E. Workman followed with four in the win.
On to the second round where the Wise Guys faced Pepco and turned a "180". With only nine hits and batting .375 for the game Pepco roughed up Top Hat/Goodfellows Pub 15-5. Jeremy Barker drove in three runs in the setback.
In the loser's bracket the Wise Guys quickly squashed the Playmakers 12-0 via run rule. Ian Craze paced the winners with a single and grand slam homer to go with five RBI.
Advancing on Top Hat/Goodfellows Pub faced Dina's in a rematch of the tournament opener. Looking to gain a measure of revenge Dina's jumped out to a 17-3 lead after three innings of play. On the verge of getting run ruled the Wise Guys erupted for seven run in the bottom of the fourth inning to get to within four at 18-14. The score remained the same until the bottom of the sixth where Top Hat/Goodfellows Pub exploded four nine runs to claim a 23-18 and held Dina's to two runs in the top of the seventh inning to earn a hard-fought come from behind victory 23-20. Eric Workman carried the big stick with five hits. Mike O'Neil and Tito Workman followed with four hits. Ian Craze, Doug Virden, Jeremy Barker and Bobby McCormick each contributed with three hits. Barker and E. Workman each knocked in five runs. Mike O'Neil drove in four runs in the win.
Advancing to the loser's bracket final the Wise Guys earned a rematch with Pepco. The game was close until the fifth inning with Top Hat/Goodfellows Pub clinging to a 10-9 lead, Pepco used an 11 run outburst to boot the Wise Guys 20-10 by run rule. Jeremy Litteral and Tito Workman led Top Hat/Goodfellows Pub with three hits. Doug Virden and Workman both knocked in three runs in the loss.

FAIRBORN- Top Hat/Goodfellows Pub made their final trip to the Dayton area for the 2009 season by participating in the WSL C state held at Jack Stewart Fields in Fairborn. The Wise Guys finished in third place in this six team event with a 2-2 record.
In the tournament opener Top Hat/Goodfellows met Columbus Premier League rival HLS Bonding/Harpers. Unable to get some offensive momentum going, the Wise Guys dropped a 19-7 decision to HLS Bonding/Harpers. The offensive display was so bad that Top Hat/Goodfellows Pub batted a putrid .345 for the game.
After a forfeit win over no show EAP, the Wise Guys took on local squad P&G Softball. P&G Softball took control early with a 7-3 lead after two innings. Top Hat/Goodfellows Pub scored six in the top of the third inning to take a 9-7 lead. P&G evened the score plating two runs in the bottom half of the third. That's a wrap!

gfellowslogo09
COLUMBUS- Top Hat/Goodfellows Pub wrapped up the 2009 Columbus Premier League season last night at Berliner Park with a pair of games in the post-season tournament. The Wise Guys knocked off top seed Mojo/Creative Stucco in the losers bracket final 20-19 but dropped a 14-13 decision in the title game to Search 2 Close/Team Mojo. It was a respectable finish considering the league is perhaps the most balanced league in the state and the fact that it's USSSA sanction with circus style pitching rules.
In the first game against Mojo/Creative Stucco, Top Hat/Goodfellows Pub led 20-12 in the bottom of the seventh and held off a furious rally by Mojo/Creative Stucco to edge out a 20-19 victory. Josh Wickline and Mike O'Neil led the charge with three hits each. Wickline, Ian Craze, Scott Carr and Eric Workman each drove in three runs in the win.
In the nightcap versus Search 2 Close/Team Mojo, the Wise Guys claimed an early 4-0 lead in the top of the first. Search 2 Close/Team Mojo answered with seven run in the bottom half of the first. From there, whenever Top Hat/Goodfellows Pub mounted a threat, Search 2 Close/Team Mojo had an answer and held off the Wise Guys 14-13. Ian Craze and Eric Workman paced Top Hat/Goodfellows Pub with four hits including two home runs apiece. Doug Virden followed with three hits. Craze, Jeremy Barker and Jeremy Litteral each collected three RBI in the setback.
