Pacifica Runs Over Western, 41-14 on Senior Recognition Night

The Pacifica Mariners took on the Western Pioneers last Friday night and Western took first possesion and put together a long drive that ended up in a Pioneer rushing touchdown to go up 7-0.   The Mariners (6-2 overall and 2-2 in league play) answered with their own long drive culminating with Senior Running Back Cody Johnson scoring on a one yard touchdown run (extra point blocked).  The Mariners would not look back after that, adding a 21 yard touchdown run by C. Johnson with 6:37 left in the 2nd quarter to make the score 13-7 (extra point good by Senior Kicker, Alex Gladden).  Western proceeded to march down the field with their run orientated wing T offense to the Mariner 30 yard line, but Pacifica's defense, led by Senior Linebacker Ryan Dickison, did not break and the Pioneers gave up the ball on downs.  Pacifica took over on the 30 yard line and wasn't finished scoring in the first half. After a nifty 15 yard pass to Senior Wideout Joel Willis for a first down, the Mariners' outstanding offensive line (Junior John Shaw, Seniors Andy More, Albert Hughes, Louis Sunseri, Keenan Burt, and tight end Etan More) provided excellent blocking on a draw play up the middle to Cody Johnson who ran and somehow kept his feet on a 50 yard touchdown (A. Gladden extra point good) to make it 20-7 Pacifica at halftime.

To starth the second half, Senior Alex Duarte returned the kickoff to the Western 45 yardline.  Pacifica went on to score again on a 9 yard Cody Johnson run (his 4th td) to make it 27-7 (Gladden kick good).  Western's next drive was spoiled by Senior defensive back Marco Lopez's interception.  Western held Pacifica and forced a Cody Johnson punt (does this guy sell programs too?) which the Mariner defenders downed at the Pioneer 2 yard line.  Ater holding Western to very little gain, the Pioneers lined up to punt only to have their fake punt attempt stopped at the 5 yard line.  On the next play, Joel Willis ran it in on the left side for another touchdown (and a Gladden extra point) to make it 34-7, PHS.  On Western's next drive, Senior Defensive lineman, Andy More sacked the Pioneer quarterback on 4th down to get the ball back for the Mariners.  Pacifica once again drove down the field and scored on a five yard touchdown run by Senior running back Marco Lopez.  (Gladden extra point good)......41-7 PHS.  Western's next drive ended as Senior linebacker Ryan Dickison popped the Pioneer running back and forced a fumble and Senior offensive lineman/center Keenan Burt (My favorite Mariner) came up with the fumble.  Western had a fumble recovery for a touchdown to wrap up the scoring and a final score of 41-14 PHS.  Great game Mariners!

Mariners Pound Garden Grove High behind triple threat of Johnson, Willis, & Nava, 42-27

The Pacifica Mariner football team won it's biggest game of the year so far, 42-27, over cross-town rival, Garden Grove High School with some great offense and stifling defense.  Senior running back Cody Johnson ran for 240 yards and two touchdowns and senior wide-out Joel Willis had a 40 td run and a 16 yard touchdown reception.  Senior quarterback Mario Nava was a very efficient 17-20 for 197 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Willis started the scoring with a  40 yard td run highlighted by a sweet spin move around a potential Argonaut tackler to make it 7-0, Pacifica.  After GGHS tied the score 7-7, Cody Johnson had the first of his 2 touchdowns to make it PHS 14, GGHS 7.  GGHS came back on a short td run by Josh Webb to tie the game at 14 at the end of the first quarter.  It would be the last time the score was tied as Cody Johnson added another touchdown run to bring the score to Mariners 21, Argos 14.  GGHS was driving down the field on the Mariners when an errant lateral was pounced on by senior center/offensive lineman, Keenan Burt (linemen rarely get press)....Hardworking senior running back Michael Estrada cashed in on the first turnover of the game with a one yard td run with 5:31 left in the first half to make it a 28-14 lead for Pacifica.    The Mariners held GGHS to a punt to set up a solid drive and  senior tight end Albert Hughes, who had his first touchdown of the season with a 19 yard  grab from Mario Nava with just over one minute remaining in the second quarter for a 35-14 lead.  With time winding down at the end of the first half,  the Mariners turned on the heat with some nice defense.  Senior linebacker Ryan Dickison had two bone-crushing hits in a row.....one on a jarring  tackle and a monster hit to brake up a pass on the next play.

In the second half,  Pacifica kept the pressure on with defense as senior lineman, Preston Knowles, had a sack of the ever elusive  Argonaut QB.  Garden Grove High's Josh Webb had quite a game in a losing effort with 42 yards rushing and one touchdown, 77 yards receiving and one touchdown, and 84 yards passing with one touchdown.  Mariner quarterback Mario Nava connected on a screen pass to wide-out, Joel Willis, with the help of senior guard Andy More's  bone crushing block to clear the path for Willis to paydirt for PHS's final score and a 42-14 lead.  Senior place-kicker Alex Gladden made all of his six extra point attempts (just like he said he would).  Josh Webb helped GGHS score the next two td's to bring the final to 42-27.

Pacifica plays a big game this Thursday at Tustin High School @ 7pm.  See you there!

The Pacifica Mariners continued their good start to the season with an impressive victory over Whittier High School last Thursday at California High in Whittier.  The Mariners held the Cardinals on their first possesion and didn't waste any time as Cody Johnson scored on a 14 yard touchdown run.  Pacifica kept the heat on with a 22 yard touchdown pass by Mario Nava to wideout Joel Willis.  Willis led the Mariners with 91 yards receiving and some spectacular catches.  The Mariners kept the heat on when Trent Langham blocked a punt and picked up the football and ran to paydirt to run the score to 20-0.  Langham continued to stay hot with a 35 yard touchdown reception from Mario Nava (Kicker Alex Gladden added extra point) to run the score to 27-0 the first quarter......Pacifica added another score with a one yard touchdown by fullback Chad Pojar in the second quarter to make it 34-0.  The Mariners where not quite finished with their scoring barrage......Running back Michael Estrada (PHS's leading rusher with 55 yards)  scored a touchdown on a two yard run in the third quarter to finish up the Mariner scoring and a 41-0 lead.  The Mariners kept it on the ground with a well balanced attack with Cody Johnson's 41 yards and running back Marco Lopez's 48 yards.  Next week is a big showdown with former rival Garden Grove High School.....see you at the game!
