Regatta tournament yields a few large bass

Jim and Craig Bushey won't be fishing in the Bassmaster Classic when it rolls into Pittsburgh on July 29-31, but some of the pros who will participate know a bit about them.
Or rather, about what they did.

The Busheys, a father-son team from Greensburg, won the inaugural Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta bass tournament last Saturday. They weighed in five bass with a total weight of 11.27 pounds.

To put the size of their victory in perspective, consider that the second place team of DJ Bishop and David Parise weighed in four fish with a total weight of just 6.16 pounds.

"It was one of those days when everything went right for us," Craig Bushey said. "We fished hard, stuck to our plan, and it worked out well for us."

The catch is impressive considering that most of the Classic competitors, in town last week to practice for the Bassmaster championship, struggled to catch many legal fish.

Those pros won't be back in Pittsburgh until a few days before the tournament, when they'll get one more day to practice. They're not allowed to solicit or receive information from any local anglers in the meantime.

They are, though, allowed to research the fishery on the Internet. In addition, several anglers mentioned in interviews this week that they had heard of the Bushey's success. They weren't convinced they would be able to duplicate it -- at least not for three successive days -- but Jim Bushey expects the pros will have some luck.

"I think they'll do well. They're the best there is, so they'll find fish," he said.

The Bushey's certainly did. They didn't catch the tournament lunker -- the team of Lawrence Hermes and Rick Vucina did that, getting a 4.32-pound largemouth -- but they did get the tournament's second biggest fish, a 3.62-pound smallmouth. They also caught another smallmouth that was almost as large.

The Busheys scouted the river about two weeks before the tournament. They found fish, though they bent the hooks on their lures so as to purposely not catch them.

"We were getting some bites, and sometimes those fish hold on long enough for you to make an educated guess about how big they are, and that seemed to work for us," Jim Bushey said.

When the tournament rolled around, the Busheys stayed in the Pittsburgh pool and fished crayfish-shaped crankbaits in deep water.

They didn't catch a lot of bass -- landing only two sub-legal fish besides those they weighed in -- but it was enough to far outpace the field.

Indeed, while anglers checked in with about 10 fish that weighed two pounds or more, not everyone caught fish. Of the 65 teams registered for the tournament, only 24 weighed in fish, said Jim Adams, president of the Pennsylvania BASS Federation's District V, which organized the tournament.

"It was nothing to write home about," Adams said.

"It was tough fishing in the heat," agreed Denny Tubbs, a District V member and aquatic resources program specialist in the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission's region office in Somerset. "But it was a decent turnout and a respectable weigh-in.

"If the pros can catch that kind of weight for three days, that would be pretty good."

Whether they can or not remains to be seen, but the Busheys hope to be among those watching. Jim Bushey will be rooting for Michigan pro Kevin Vandam to win the Classic, but he's just excited to have a chance to see the Classic so close to home.

"I'm really anxious," he said. "It's going to be great for Pittsburgh."
