TWO OF FOUR WHO GO DOWN UNDER FROM MARIAN
Spinner, Women’s Lacrosse four-some heading to Australia for 2006 Down Under Cup

Dolphins to follow up successful 2006 season by competing in prestigious international tournament

5/30/2006 - (Riverdale, NY) – While the Mount Saint Vincent Women’s Lacrosse season ended at the ECAC Upstate Semifinals on May 13, for Head Coach Mike Spinner and four members of the team, the 2006 lacrosse campaign is not over. In fact, the year is taking an exciting twist as Spinner, along with a Mount Saint Vincent four-some will travel to Melbourne, Australia on Wednesday, May 31 to compete on behalf of USA Athletes International at the 2006 Down Under Cup.

The tournament begins play with the opening ceremonies on Saturday, June 3 and ends on the morning of Thursday, June 8, and will involve more than a dozen different countries from all around the world. After the June 8 Championship Game, the team will fly to Brisbane, Australia for four days of site-seeing on Australia’s beautiful coastline.

“This is an amazing opportunity for all 15 members of the USA team, particularly for the four members of the Mount Saint Vincent team who will compete,” said Spinner, the only Head Coach in the history of the Mount Saint Vincent Women’s Lacrosse program, who led the Mount to a 9-8 regular season record in 2006 and losses in both the Skyline Conference and ECAC Upstate Semifinals. “It’s always been a dream of mine to coach lacrosse all around the world, and it is very satisfying to give some of the members of my team at the Mount the chance to go. After all, without their hard work and success on the field, I never would have been chosen to be the Head Coach of this team.”

Spinner, who will be assisted by Guilford College Head Coach Matt Grosso in Melbourne, chose freshman attacker Ciara O’Donnell (Bethpage, NY/Kellenberg), sophomore attackers Amanda Nadhir (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Marian) and Marie Garcia(Medford, MA/Medford HS), and sophomore midfielder Maureen Payne (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Marian) to compete on a team that includes membership from some of the premier Division I, II, and III programs in the country. Spinner said he feels confident that the Mount Saint Vincent group will represent their program well in international play.

“I wish I could have brought more from Mount Saint Vincent, but between summer schedules and NCAA regulations concerning tours such as these, it wasn’t in the cards, but there were certainly a few more who deserved to be on this trip. At the same time, I feel great about the four we are bringing. They all have been integral part of the building of this program from a first year program to a Conference Championship contender, and each one of them earned their way to Australia,” Spinner said.

USA has never found its way to the winner’s circle at the Down Under Cup, but Spinner said he is confident that the 2006 team will be in the hunt once play begins.

“We started putting this team together in September and the goal was to pick a team that would not just see this is a vacation in Australia, but an opportunity to compete on a pretty big stage and compete for a championship against some of the best competition in the world. We also wanted a group with good enough lacrosse backgrounds that will allow them to rise to the occasion once we get there. I have no idea what to expect from our opponents in Melbourne, but I do feel pretty good about this team,” Spinner said. “Win or lose, this is going to be the experience of a lifetime, and it is an opportunity none of us would have had without our efforts at Mount Saint Vincent. It’s amazing that 26 months ago, this program did not exist. Roughly two years later, we’ve had two winning seasons, a trip to both the Conference and ECAC playoffs, and now the opportunity to go all around the world and play. It’s overwhelming to think about all we have done in such a short time, and my only hope is that the four young ladies traveling with this team can take with them that in two years they have done more than most people get to do during their entire athletics careers. I am very proud of them and I cannot wait to get to Melbourne.”

CONGRATULATIONS AMANDA NADHIR: 100 CAREER POINTS!
With a five-point effort during a 22-9 win over St. Joseph's (CT) on April 24, Mount Saint Vincent sophomore Amanda Nadhir became the first Women's Lacrosse player to reach the 100-point plateau. With a 32 goal, 12 assist season in 2006, Nadhir has now amassed 107 career points and is the all-time leading scorer in the brief history of Women's Lacrosse at the Mount. Amanda was presented with the game-ball from the April 24th game prior to the Mount's 2006 finale against Cazenovia College.

Women’s Lacrosse falls to top-seeded Red Hawks in Skyline Conference Semifinals
Dolphins outscored 12-0 during second half of first-ever playoff game; Balingcongan: 10 saves

4/26/2006 - (Montclair, NJ) – When it was all over, the scoreboard may have declared an 18-1 Montclair State victory in the Skyline Conference Women's Lacrosse Semifinals, but there were volumes it could not speak.

The final score said nothing of the fact that the visiting team had only come into existence 13 months earlier, and had a starting line-up without a single player older than sophomore year. And not only was this the Mount’s first time in the playoffs, it marked the first time during the 2005-06 academic year that a Mount Saint Vincent team in any sport had advanced to the Skyline Conference playoffs. With a young roster and a spirited 8-8 season under their belts, Wednesday’s game was not nearly as important as the experience the team gained as they try to reach the upper echelon of the Skyline Conference. And for a while on Wednesday, it seemed like the Mount had done just that.

Unlike last Saturday’s 17-3 loss to the Red Hawks in which Montclair jumped all over the Mount from the opening draw, Wednesday’s first half was a competitive affair with both teams seeing golden opportunities to pull ahead. After Montclair scored only two minutes into the game, the Dolphin defense suffocated the potent Red Hawk attack for more than 10 minutes before a beautiful transition goal put Montclair ahead 2-0 at 18:59. However, during the 10 minutes without a goal, Mount Saint Vincent gained confidence and actually controlled time of possession. And when Dolphin sophomore Maureen Payne (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Marian) found the back of the net at 13:07 to make it a 2-1 game, the Red Hawks were forced to call timeout.

The Dolphins won the ensuing draw and generated a quality shot, but a terrific Montclair save led to a fast break the other way and a Red Hawk tally made it 3-1. Three minutes later, it was 6-1, but Montclair’s efforts to blow the game open were thwarted by the Dolphin defense until the end of the first half, and the game remained 6-1 after 30 minutes.

The second half was a different story as the Dolphins simply ran out of gas. Montclair turned up the pressure and their vaunted transition game came to the forefront. The Red Hawks scored at 29:50, and then at 29:37 to make it 8-1. Exactly nine minutes later, it was 12-1, and the rout was on. Montclair finished the second half outscoring the Mount, 12-0 as a 21-3 shot advantage and 9-5 ground ball edge during the final 30 minutes gave the Red Hawks all of the scoring opportunities they could ask for. Freshman goalie Alexis Balingcongan (Glen Cove, NY/Glen Cove HS) was stellar between the pipes, for the Mount, making 10 saves, six of which came during the first half to keep things close.

Montclair advanced to Saturday’s Skyline Conference Championship where they will host second-seeded Manhattanville College at 7:00 p.m.

But for the young Dolphin team, the consolation prize was that not a single senior took the field in blue and gold. In other words, Wednesday’s first-ever playoff appearance was just the start for one of the newest teams in the region. And despite the loss, the 2006 season has not ended. Mount Saint Vincent will take the field one final time on Saturday, May 6 when they host Cazenovia at 1:00 p.m. The 8-9 Dolphins will look to reach .500 or better for the second consecutive season and keep their faint ECAC post-season hopes alive.

Women’s Lacrosse sails past St. Joseph’s (CT), 22-9, to improve to 8-8
Garcia nets career-high six assists while O’Donnell chips in six points; Dolphins to face Montclair State in Skyline Semifinals on Wednesday

4/24/2006 - (Hartford, CT) – Sophomore Marie Garcia (Medford, MA/Medford HS) registered a career-high six assists, and freshman Ciara O’Donnell (Bethpage, NY/Kellenberg) chipped in four goals and two assists as the Mount Saint Vincent Women’s Lacrosse team raced out to a 15-3 first half lead en route to a 22-9 win over St. Joseph’s (CT) during a game played on Monday at St. Joseph’s. With the win, Mount Saint Vincent improves to 8-8 for the 2006 season with one regular season game to play.

Mount Saint Vincent jumped all over the Blue Jays on Monday, scoring only 31 seconds after the opening draw, and six times overall during the first six minutes of play. Sophomore Amanda Nadhir (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Marian) scored five times during the first 17 minutes of the game, and Mount Saint Vincent enjoyed a 15-3 lead with 7:05 remaining in the first half before putting the breaks on and headed into halftime with the 12-goal lead.

The second half allowed the Dolphin reserves and defense to join the scoring rush, and freshman Jenna McColgan (Malverne, NY/Malverne HS) tallied her first career multi-goal game, while sophomore defender Michelle Yarger (Chantilly, VA/Chantilly HS) netted two goals and an assist during her first action on the offensive half during the 2006 season. Garcia put on a show during the final 30 minutes, registering five of her six assists as Mount Saint Vincent set a season high for goals.

Also having big games for the Mount were sophomore Cyndi Adams (Mechanicsville, MD/Chopticon HS) who had a goal and three assists, and junior Elizabeth Clark (Silver Spring, MD/St. John’s Prep) had two goals and an assist.

Mount Saint Vincent dominated every facet of the game statistically, outshooting St. Joseph’s 41-17, and winning 28 of the game’s 33 draw controls.

Women’s Lacrosse sees two-game winning streak snapped, 17-3 by Skyline Conference leading Red Hawks
Nadhir scores twice but Dolphins fall to 7-8, 3-3 Skyline Conference after trailing 11-2 at halftime

4/22/2006 - (Montclair, NJ) – Sophomore Amanda Nadhir (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Marian) scored her 24th and 25th goals of the 2006 season, and goalie Tara Staples (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendahowa HS) stopped six out of 12 shots during the second half of play, but the Mount Saint Vincent Women’s Lacrosse team saw their two-game winning streak snapped, 17-3 at the hands of Skyline Conference leader Montclair State during a game played at Montclair on Saturday. With the loss, the Dolphins drop to 7-8 for the 2006 season and finish the season 3-3 in Skyline Conference play, but still secured the fourth seed for next week’s Skyline Conference playoffs when they will travel to face top-seeded Montclair State on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.

Mount Saint Vincent actually controlled play for the game’s first six minutes, but were unable to score on their first three shots. From that point, Montclair went on a roll, outscoring the Mount 7-1 during a 3:40 span to take a commanding lead only 10 minutes into the game. The lone Mount tally during the early going was by sophomore Maureen Payne (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Marian) on a free position shot at 21:57. Down 7-1, the Mount actually held the Red Hawks scoreless for more than 12 minutes late in the opening half, but Montclair outscored the Mount 4-1 during the final seven minutes of the opening stanza to take an 11-2 halftime lead.

The second half saw both teams tighten up on the defensive end as Staples entered the game and stopped the first five shots she faced, but a relentless Red Hawk attack allowed Montclair to extend the lead to 14 goals, with their final tally coming with 2:27 remaining in the game.

Turnovers plagued the Dolphins all afternoon as Mount Saint Vincent turned the ball over 31 times compared to Montclair’s 20, while the Red Hawks enjoyed a 20-11 ground ball edge. Mount Saint Vincent was also unable to take advantage of numerous Montclair fouls as the Dolphins were 1 for 7 on free position shots.

Women’s Lacrosse cruises to second straight win, 17-4 over Western Connecticut; now 7-7
Dolphins race out to 12-1 halftime lead and never look back; Eight different Dolphins score goals

4/19/2006 - (Riverdale, NY) – Sophomores Marie Garcia (Medford, MA/Medford HS) and Cyndi Adams (Mechanicsville, MD/Chopticon HS) combined for nine points, and freshman Ciara O’Donnell (Bethpage, NY/Kellenberg) registered her seventh hat trick of the 2006 season as the Mount Saint Vincent Women’s Lacrosse team downed Western Connecticut 17-4 in a non-conference home game played at Maritime College. With the win, the Dolphins improve their record to 7-7 for the 2006 season, and have three regular season games remaining along with the Skyline Conference playoffs.

Garcia was sensational during the early going, registering two goals and three assists during the first 11 minutes of play as the Mount jumped out to a 7-0 lead en route to a 12-1 advantage at halftime. Both Garcia and Adams – who scored four times – did all of their scoring during the first half of play as Mount Saint Vincent out-shot the Colonials 23-9 and won 10 out of 14 draw controls during the first 30 minutes of play. O’Donnell became the first Dolphin to break the 30-goal mark this season as her three-goal output gives her 31 goals and 36 points this season, both team highs.

Also having big games for the Mount were sophomore Chanel Comis (Durham, NC/Cardinal Gibbons) who scored three times, and Amanda Nadhir (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Marian) found the back of the net twice. Eight different Dolphins scored during the game, and the Mount combined for seven assists as a team. On the defensive end, freshman goalie Alexis Balingcongan (Glen Cove, NY/Glen Cove HS) earned the win in net as she stopped 13 out of 17 Western Connecticut shots.

Mission Accomplished! Women’s Lacrosse downs Cyclones to clinch Skyline Conference playoff berth
Dolphins race out to 9-0 halftime lead en route to sixth win of 2006

4/18/2006 - (Riverdale, NY) – Three years later, the Mount Saint Vincent Women’s Lacrosse program has finally reached a height once dreamed about when the sport was introduced as a club program during the Fall of 2003. There were major steps to be taken. 2004 was the program’s club season. 2005 was the team’s first at the varsity level. And 2006 marked the first time Mount Saint Vincent entered a Conference for Women’s Lacrosse as the Skyline Conference sponsored the sport for the first time this season. And after three years of building a Women’s Lacrosse dream from scratch, Mount Saint Vincent is heading to the post-season. With Tuesday’s 16-4 rout of Centenary, the Dolphins have clinched the fourth and final seed in next week’s Skyline Conference playoffs to go along with their 6-7 overall record and 3-2 mark in Conference play.

Freshman Ciara O’Donnell (Bethpage, NY/Kellenberg) scored four goals and added an assist while Cyndi Adams (Mechanicsville, MD/Chopticon HS) netted a hat trick, and Chanel Comis (Durham, NC/Cardinal Gibbons), Amanda Nadhir (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Marian), and Stacie Tripp (Glen Cove, NY/Glen Cove HS) found the back of the net two times each as the Mount raced out to a 9-0 halftime lead and never looked back.

O’Donnell’s goals came in a hurry as the rookie scored at 25:27 of the first half to make it a 4-0 game, and then scored three times in a 5:18 span late in the first half to increase the lead to nine. The second half saw six different Dolphins combine for seven goals during an outstanding effort as eight total Dolphins scored during the rout. The Mount defense was also outstanding, holding Centenary (1-11, 0-4 Skyline Conference) to 14 shots and four goals. Junior goalie Tara Staples (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendahowa HS) made seven saves, while her counterpart, Laura Davis (Oak Ridge, NJ/Vernon Township HS) was incredible between the pipes, making 15 saves.

Sophomore Nicole Becker (Randolph, NJ/Randolph HS) scored twice for the Cyclones, while Lauren Feldman also added a pair of goals.

FIRST AND SIXTH IN SCORING LIGHTING UP THE WAY

Adams, Nadhir lead Women’s Lacrosse to second straight Skyline Conference win, 18-8 over Farmingdale State

Sophomore duo combines for 14 points as Dolphins improve to 5-6; Dolphin defense holds opponents to single digits for sixth time this season

4/10/2006 - (New York, NY) – Sophomore Cyndi Adams (Mechanicsville, MD/Chopticon HS) scored a career-high six goals and added an assist, and fellow sophomore Amanda Nadhir (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Marian) added four goals and three assists as the Mount Saint Vincent Women’s Lacrosse team won for the second straight game, 18-8 over visiting Farmingdale during a game played at Wien Stadium at Columbia University.

The game was all Mount Saint Vincent from the start as the Dolphins jumped out to an 8-0 lead before holding a 9-2 lead after 30 minutes. The Rams went on a run of sorts and at one point the score was 11-6, but the Dolphins scored seven of the game’s final nine goals to put the game out of reach. Eight different Dolphins found the back of the net as Marie Garcia (Medford, MA/Medford HS) and Ciara O’Donnell (Bethpage, NY/Kellenberg) each scored twice with Garcia netting three assists and nine ground balls.

The Mount Saint Vincent defense also had another solid outing as the Mount held an opponent under 10 goals for the sixth time during 11 games this season. Goalie Tara Staples (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendahowa HS) allowed seven goals and made six saves before freshman Alexis Balingcongan (Glen Cove, NY/Glen Cove HS) came on in relief and stopped six out of seven shots during the final 12 minutes of play.

Women’s Lacrosse gains historic first Skyline Conference win, 15-9 over Kean University during 2006 home opener
Women’s Lacrosse gains historic first Skyline Conference win, 15-9 over Kean University during 2006 home opener

Dolphins race out to 8-3 halftime lead en route to huge Conference win; O’Donnell: 4 goals 2 assists, Garcia: 4 points

4/8/2006 - (New York, NY) – There are few words or phrases to describe the magnitude of the win in the larger context of the development of the Mount Saint Vincent Women’s Lacrosse program other than the fact that Saturday’s 15-9 triumph over Kean University was simply the biggest win in the history of the program. Two years after falling 27-4 to Kean as a club team and a year after dropping a 16-15 heartbreaker to the Cougars as a first-year varsity program, Mount Saint Vincent entered Saturday’s home opener as a team on a mission to not only keep its hopes at a Skyline Conference playoff berth alive, but to earn respectability over the NJAC powerhouse and arch-nemesis of Mount Saint Vincent for the last two years. By halftime, both goals were all but reached as the Dolphins jumped out to an 8-3 lead after 30 minutes, and never looked back. With the win, the Mount improves to 4-6 overall and 1-1 in the Skyline Conference with two huge Conference games coming this week.

Freshman goalie Alexis Balingcongan made 15 saves as the Mount Saint Vincent Women's Lacrosse team downed Kean University 15-9 on Saturday for their first ever Skyline Conference win. The Dolphins are now 4-6 overall and 1-1 in Skyline play. They host Farmingdale State on Monday at 4:00 p.m. at Columbia University's Wien Stadium.

Mount Saint Vincent wasted little time pulling away as the opening draw produced an outstanding defensive stand, and Marie Garcia (Medford, MA/Medford HS) notched what would become her third game-winning goal of the season just over a minute into play to give the Dolphins the lead. Seven minutes later, the lead was 4-0, and with just over five minutes remaining in the first half, the Dolphins enjoyed a 7-1 advantage. After trading goals, Kean scored on a free-position shot during the final five seconds of the first half to make it an 8-3 lead at the break.

The Dolphins quickly scored the first two goals of the second half to make a 10-3 lead, and then held off several Kean attempts at a run to make things close. The closest the Cougars would get was 12-8 before the Mount scored three of the final four goals to secure the win. Garcia finished with two goals and two assists and was a huge part of the Mount’s transition game that featured four fast break goals. Freshman Ciara O’Donnell (Bethpage, NY/Kellenberg) scored a career-high four goals for the second time this week and added two assists for a career high six points. The Mount was also led by a trio of hat-trick scorers as sophomores Amanda Nadhir (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Marian), Cyndi Adams (Mechanicsville, MD/Chopticon HS), and Chanel Comis (Durham, NC/Cardinal Gibbons) each found the back of the net three times. Nadhir also added an assist.

But the story of the game on the Mount Saint Vincent side was the play of the Dolphin defense. Led by freshman Alexis Balingcongan’s (Glen Cove, NY/Glen Cove HS) 15 saves and an incredible effort by sophomores Michelle Yarger (Chantilly, VA/Chantilly HS), Erin Davies (Islip, NY/Islip HS), Cynthia Osorio (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside HS), and Alexis Alessi (Rockville Centre, NY/Oceanside HS), the Mount held an opponent to less than 10 goals for the fifth time in 10 games this season.

Despite a stunning 11-10 triple overtime loss to Manhattanville last Tuesday, Mount Saint Vincent is still very much in the mix for a Skyline Conference playoff berth thanks to Saturday’s win.

Women’s Lacrosse drops triple overtime heartbreaker to Valiants in Skyline Conference opener
O’Donnell scores four goals, Balingcongan makes 16 saves; 3-5 Dolphins face defending National Champion TCNJ on Thursday

4/4/2006 - (Purchase, NY) – Just when it seemed like the Mount Saint Vincent Women’s Lacrosse season was beginning to slip away, the young Dolphin team did everything on Tuesday to prove that they are very much alive and kicking … everything except win their Skyline Conference opener against Manhattanville College. After losing consecutive games to Babson and Vassar last week by a combined 22 goals, the Dolphins suited up Tuesday afternoon for their first ever Conference game against a Valiant team that on Saturday stunned the Skyline lacrosse world with an upset win over Stevens. And when halftime hit and Mount Saint Vincent trailed 6-3, the Dolphins seemed to be down and fading away.
However, an incredible second half comeback led to one of the most fantastic finishes of 2006 as the Mount not only overcame the deficit, but they also took a 10-9 lead with 1:32 remaining in regulation. Ultimately, Manhattanville tied the score in the final minute of regulation, and then emerged from a triple overtime battle with a 12-11 win. The loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 3-5 having lost three straight games.

The game belonged to two Dolphin freshmen as attacker Ciara O’Donnell (Bethpage, NY/Kellenberg) scored a career-high four goals, while goalie Alexis Balingcongan (Glen Cove, NY/Glen Cove HS) made an incredible16 saves, many of which were of the spectacular variety. Two of O’Donnell’s goals came during a 35 second span of the second half as the Mount erased an 8-5 deficit and trailed 8-7. Two minutes later, sophomore Chanel Comis (Durham, NC/Cardinal Gibbons) completed the comeback with a spectacular goal to tie the score.

Manhattanville took a 9-8 lead with 10:17 remaining, but goals by Cyndi Adams (Mechanicsville, MD/Chopticon HS) and Amanda Nadhir (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Marian) in a 1:09 span gave the Mount a 10-9 lead with just over a minute to play. After gaining the ball off the ensuing draw, a Mount Saint Vincent turnover gave Manhattanville a fast break, which the Valiants converted to tie the score and force the first two extra sessions. O’Donnell scored her fourth goal of the game during the first overtime to put the Mount ahead, but a late goal in the second overtime by the Valiants forced the sudden death third overtime. The Valiants ended things at 5:02 of the third overtime with a controversial free position goal.

While down, the Mount Saint Vincent team that saw all 11 goals scored by freshmen or sophomores is certainly not out. Besides O’Donnell’s and Balingcongan’s heroics, Comis and Nadhir each scored twice, while Adams scored a season-high three goals, doubling her season goal total to six.

Saturday, April 1
Women’s Lacrosse drops second straight game, 18-9 to Vassar; now 3-4
Dolphins fall behind 13-4 at halftime; Nadhir: 3 points; Comis, Payne: 2 goals apiece

4/1/2006 - (Poughkeepsie, NY) – Sophomore Amanda Nadhir (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Marian) had a goal and two assists, and fellow sophomores Chanel Comis (Durham, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) and Maureen Payne (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Marian) scored two goals each, but the Mount Saint Vincent Women’s Lacrosse team suffered its second straight loss, 18-9 to Vassar College on Saturday. With the loss, Mount Saint Vincent falls to 3-4 for the 2006 season.

Things got off to a promising start for the Mount as the Dolphins won the opening draw, moved the ball well for more than two minutes and Nadhir found the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. However, things fell apart quickly for the Dolphins as Vassar reeled off six straight goals and 10 of the next 11 tallies and took a 10-2 lead en route to a 13-4 halftime advantage. The second half saw a much more competitive effort by the Mount as the teams played to a 5-5 tie, but the rough first half was too much for the Dolphins to overcome. Vassar controlled possession thanks to a 48-32 ground ball advantage, and an 18-11 edge in draw controls.

Women’s Lacrosse drilled by Babson 17-4, now 3-3
Dolphins allow five goals during closing minutes of the first half; Garcia scores twice

3/30/2006 - (Babson Park, MA) – Sophomore Marie Garcia (Medford, MA/Medford HS) scored twice, and fellow sophomores Chanel Comis (Durham, NC/Cardinal Gibbons) and Amanda Nadhir (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Marian) scored a goal apiece, but the Mount Saint Vincent Women’s Lacrosse team fell to 3-3 after a 17-4 drubbing at the hands of Babson College during a night game played at Babson. After falling behind 5-1, the Mount battled back to make it 5-3, and the two teams remained at that score for nearly 10 minutes. However, Babson scored five goals during the final 4:37 of the opening half to break the game wide open.

Babson’s five-goal run was increased to nine to make it 14-3 four minutes into the second half. Nadhir’s tally brought the Mount to within 10, but Babson scored the games final three goals. Mount Saint Vincent was outshot 40-9 during the game and committed 25 turnovers to Babson’s five. Freshman goalie Alexis Balingcongan (Glen Cove, NY/Glen Cove HS) made 13 saves to keep the game close.

Payne, Tripp named to Skyline Conference Honor Roll for Women’s Lacrosse
Riddle leads Conference weekly awards winners by being named HVWAC Player of the Week for Softball

3/29/2006 - (Riverdale, NY) – Mount Saint Vincent freshman softball pitcher Jessica Riddle (Billerica, MA/Billerica HS) was named the Hudson Valley Women’s Athletic Conference (HVWAC) Player of the Week this week after an impressive week of play despite an 0-2 record on the mound. The honor was the first conference award for the rookie who is currently 1-6 on the mound for Mount Saint Vincent. Riddle was not the only Dolphin athlete to be honored this week by a Conference as Women’s Lacrosse sophomore Maureen Payne (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Marian) and freshman Stacie Tripp (Glen Cove, NY/Glen Cove HS) were both named to the Skyline Conference Honor Roll.

Riddle was impressive on the mound during starts on consecutive days at USMMA-Kings Point and St. Joseph’s (LI) – two powerhouse programs in the Skyline Conference. She pitched a combined 10.2 innings and allowed 10 earned runs while striking out four. Mount Saint Vincent was swept during both doubleheaders, but rebounded on Tuesday against Baruch as Riddle notched her first career win on the mound during a brilliant performance. She pitched a complete game and allowed only two earned runs as Mount Saint Vincent broke an 11-game losing streak with a 6-3 win over the Bearcats. For the season, Riddle is 1-6 with an 8.50 ERA, but leads the Dolphins with 18 strikeouts in 42 innings. Riddle is also batting .259 with a team-leading five runs scored at the plate.

Payne and Tripp had outstanding weeks for the Dolphins as the Mount finished the week 2-1 after a 15-9 loss to FDU-Florham on Tuesday before defeating Keuka 13-2 on Saturday and Medaille 20-5 on Sunday. After not registering a point against FDU, Payne had a combined seven goals and an assist during the weekend at Keuka and Medaille. She also had a terrific weekend as the Mount’s center. Tripp saw her first extensive playing time for the Mount and was phenomenal. After coming off the bench to score twice against FDU on Tuesday, she celebrated her first career start on Sunday with a four goal, three assist effort against Medaille. Mount Saint Vincent is currently 3-2.

Women’s Lacrosse sweeps upstate New York trip with big wins over Keuka, Medaille
Dolphin defense allows seven total goals during back-to-back games; Tripp nets seven points during first career start on Sunday

3/27/2006 - (Riverdale, NY) – Sophomore Maureen Payne (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Marian) netted eight points during two games and was dominant as the Mount’s Center, and a Dolphin defense led by sophomore Michelle Yarger (Chantilly, VA/Chantilly HS), sophomore Erin Davies (Islip, NY/Islip HS), and freshman Megan Fleri (Islip, NY/Islip HS) held two opponents to a combined seven goals as the Mount Saint Vincent Women’s Lacrosse team improved to 3-2 with a weekend sweep of Keuka College and Medaille College during a trip to upstate New York. The Dolphins opened play with a 13-2 win over Keuka on Saturday at Hobart College, and then took to the field 24 hours later and crushed Medaille, 20-5 on Sunday.

Sophomore Maureen Payne had a huge weekend with seven goals and an assist, and was dominant at the draw circle as Mount Saint Vincent swept a weekend trip to upstate New York, 13-2 over Keuka on Saturday and 20-5 over Medaille on Sunday. Mount Saint Vincent is now 3-2 and travels to Babson on Thursday night.

Payne was incredible on Saturday, scoring twice during the first 2:30 to put the Mount ahead. The game went back and forth throughout the first half and Mount Saint Vincent led 5-2 after 30 minutes. However, the Mount exploded during the second half, outscoring Keuka 8-0 during that stretch as Payne netted her third of the game, and Chanel Comis (Durham, NC/Cardinal Gibbons) scored a hat-trick, while Amanda Nadhir (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Marian) and Marie Garcia (Medford, MA/Medford HS) each scored twice and added an assist. Mount Saint Vincent outshot Keuks 32-15 for the game.

The Dolphins wasted little time Sunday jumping all over Medaille, scoring four goals during the game’s first two minutes and then cruising to victory. The game saw the emergence of freshman Stacie Tripp (Glen Cove, NY/Glen Cove HS), who celebrated her first collegiate start with an unbelievable four-goal, three-assist effort. Nine different Dolphins scored during the win as Payne tallied four more goals and added an assist, while Nadhir scored a hat-trick, and Comis added two goals and two assists. Junior Beth Clark (Silver Spring, MD/St. John’s Prep) tallied a career-high four points with two goals and two assists.

Women’s Lacrosse wins 9-8 thriller over Puget Sound to finish Spring Break trip 1-1
Garcia scores winning goal with 1:21 remaining; Balingcongan makes 16 saves during collegiate debut; Dolphins play two one-goal games during Spring Break 2006

3/16/2006 - (Wellington, Florida) - If the first week of the second season of Women’s Lacrosse at Mount Saint Vincent proved anything, it made it clear that the 2006 season is going to be a thriller for the Dolphins. Coming off of a remarkable inaugural season in which they finished 12-4, the Mount headed south this week to Wellington, Florida to play their first two games of the year. The games were near carbon copies of each other with the Mount dropping a 7-6 heartbreaker to SUNY Potsdam on Tuesday night before winning a 9-8 thriller over Puget Sound on Thursday. The Dolphins now return home with a 1-1 record heading into Tuesday’s game at FDU-Florham.

Thursday’s game was nothing short of a roller coaster ride with neither team holding a lead of more than two goals. Puget Sound opened the scoring early before a Chanel Comis (Durham, NC/Cardinal Gibbons) goal evened things at one. After the teams traded goals, Puget Sound stormed ahead for a 4-2 lead. However, Mount Saint Vincent scored three straight goals to end the first half, and led 5-4 after 30 minutes.

The second half saw both teams tighten up their defenses as the goals were few and far between. Mount Saint Vincent led 8-6 with five minutes remaining, but Puget Sound tied the score with just under two minutes remaining in the game. That’s when sophomore Mare Garcia (Medford, MA/Medford HS) stepped in and took the hero’s title, scoring a spectacular goal with 1:21 remaining to give the Dolphins the dramatic 9-8 win.

Garcia finished the game with two goals and an assist, and freshman Ciara O’Donnell (Bethpage, NY/Kellenberg) scored her first career hat trick in a winning effort. But the story of the game was the Mount Saint Vincent defense as the Dolphins held their opponents to single digits for the second straight game. Sophomore Cynthia Osorio (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside HS) had a spectacular game with 11 ground balls and a tremendous defensive effort, while fellow sophomores Michelle Yarger (Chantilly, VA/Chantilly HS) and Alexis Alessi (Rockville Centre, NY/Oceanside HS) were equally impressive. The game also featured the first career start for freshman goalie Alexis Balingcongan (Glen Cove, NY/Glen Cove HS), and the rookie was nothing short of sensational, making 16 saves, including an outstanding one-on-one stop with less than a minute remaining in the game to preserve the win.

The win helps the Mount overcome a difficult 7-6 loss to SUNY Potsdam on Tuesday night to start the 2006 season. Despite a 31-20 advantage in shots, a heavy edge in ground balls and time of possession, and more than 40 minutes of play with the Mount in the lead, the Dolphins allowed three goals during the final seven minutes of play, including the game-winner with 32 seconds remaining for a shocking loss. Garcia scored twice, and sophomore Amanda Nadhir (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Marian) chipped in two goals and two assists. The Mount Saint Vincent defense, led by junior goalie Tara Staples (Clifton Park, NY/Shenandahowa HS), who made 12 saves, was stellar, allowing only three goals during the first half and four during the second half.

MARIAN'S US LACROSSE HIGH SCHOOL 2005 ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICANS
Congratulations to Christie Burnett, goalie, Caitlin Conway, mid, Jill Dery, mid, Lauren Gaer, defense, Taylor Griglak, mid, and Maggie Wagner, attack, for making this year's academic all-american squad. Players selected for the honor must have a minimum grade point average of 3.6 or higher, have taken a minimum of 50 percent of college preparatory classes at an honors or AP level, be a starter or key reserve, and be a junior or senior.

FRIZZO NAMED US LACROSSE ALL-AMERICAN
Congratulations to Lauren Frizzo. She is Marian's second All-American in the last two seasons. Lauren earned Honorable Mention honors along with Alexis Pavle from Grosse Pointe South. They are the only two All-Americans from Michigan this year.

Lauren is planning to play for Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio next season. Ohio Wesleyan is a DIII school and member of the North Coast Athletic Conference. OWU won their first conference tournament title in 2005 and made their first NCAA appearance as a result of earning the conference automatic tournament bid. Lauren will join another Marian grad, Ashley Gaer, who is finishing her collegiate career at OWU in 2006.

CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS
Marian ended their season early and unexpectedly when handed a resounding defeat by the Powers Catholic Chargers. 11 seniors played their last game for Marian that day. Some took it harder than others.

In the end, it was a season of peaks and valleys with just a few more ups than downs. The eleven win and nine loss season reflects how good Marian could be one day and how poorly they could play on another. Still, a Marian team has never finished below 500.

One thing no other team in the state can say about this longest exhibition season of meaniningless games and the first season of MHSAA sanctioned lacrosse playoffs is that the only team to beat all four finalists this year was Marian.

The Mustangs defeated the Academy of the Sacred Heart twice this past season while losing to them when three goals were called back and ASH scored on four free position shots, so much for the Division 2 champions. Detroit Country Day, the other Division 2 finalist, lost to Marian in their only meeting between the two teams this season. Grosse Pointe South split their series with Marian and opted up to Division 1, clearly the weaker of the two divisions this year, to claim their third straight state championship. Troy Athens, the other Division 1 finalist, lost to Marian 17 to 6. The 17 goals given up by Athens were the most scored against Athens all year and the six they scored against Marian were the fewest Athens scored in any game this year. Is Marian an MHSAA sanctioned playoff champion? No. But they are a true Champion nonetheless.

Go and goodbye Mustangs.

COURAGEOUS CRANE-VARKS SUCCUMB TO MUSTANGS
Bloomfield Marian 12, Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood 6 @ Cranbrook

For a half, Marian and CK traded goals like boxers trade punches. Play moved quickly from one end of the field to the other as both teams showed tenacity, strength and speed. The first half ended with Marian hanging on to a slim 6 to 5 lead. The second half had all of the same characteristics plus some chippy play by both sides but the scoring in the second half found Marian able to put in 6 more shots while CK was able to find the back of the goal only once.

Maggie Wagner led the Mustangs with three goals and three assists. Jill Dery scored three goals with one assist and Christie Burnett made 13 saves. Marian stands at 11 and 8 while CK ends their season with a record of 1-12-2.

Marian moves on to the Pontiac Notre Dame Prep regional final to be played on Tuesday afternoon, June 7, at 5pm. The opponent will be the winner of today's Flint Powers versus Pontiac Notre Dame Prep match.

MARIAN 10, GROSSE POINTE SOUTH 12
Marian put up a gallant fight on a typically cold night for lacrosse in Grosse Pointe at South. Our goalie, Christie Burnett, injured her knee in the pre-game but fought on until she couldn't endure the pain anymore. She was replaced by, Rachel Rourke, who volunteered for duty above and beyond the call and accorded herself quite well in her first game experience at the position. One of our defenders was involved in a car accident on her way to the game with her mom and they were getting checked out at the hospital during the game. We hope Shona Lindsay and her mom are okay. Lauren Frizzo had three goals with several other two and single goal scorers but it wasn't enough.

MARIAN 14, BIRMINGHAM 7
At Birmingham, Lauren Frizzo scored six goals, Taylor Griglak scored three goals with one assist for Marian (6-4) and Natalie Yatsko scored three goals for Birmingham (2-6-2).

MUSTANGS DEFEAT DCD
Our guests for the second Michigan game of the season weren't very well behaved to begin the game taking the lead early and often before Marian fought back for a hard-earned 10 to 5 victory.

Where to start? How about the continually improving goalie play of Chritie Burnett? Or maybe, it's the offensive punch provided by Molly Henry, Maggie Wagner and Melissa Fontenesi. Let's not overlook the defensive play of the entire unit in front of our goalie.

We'll need to continue to improve in view of Flint Power's victory over Ann Arbor Pioneer and Ann Arbor Pioneer's 4 to 4 tie with Grosse Pointe South. The times they are a changin'.

Not to be overlooked is the 6 to 4 victory by the Mustang junior varsity over the DCD jv.

We'll see you next Tuesday at 4:30pm on Marian's home field at Brother Rice's Ambrose Field for our games against the Academy of the Sacred Heart.

MARIAN STARTS MICHIGAN SEASON WITH A WIN
Marian's Mustangs started off on the right feet. Marian succeeded in defeating the Birmingham United varsity by a score of 13 to 4.

The junior varsity battled back to salvage a 3 to 3 tie.

See you Thursday for the game against DCD at Brother Rice's Ambrose Field, Marian's home field.

SHORTHANDED MUSTANGS ENDURE TWO LOSSES
Holding a major lacrosse tournament on a national testing day can cause some problems and present some opportunities.

Marian was without five of its juniors including a number of starters. That didn't help in the 7 to 3 loss to Dublin Jerome or the 10 to 4 loss to Worthington Kilbourne. On the other hand, it gave younger players an opportunity to learn in game conditions and play positions they might not normally play. The did well. Our goal keeping was solid. Our defense played well, even with the loss of our defensive captain to a sprained ankle suffered in the warm up for the entire Kilbourne game. The offense showed flashes of exciting possibilities.

The opposition played the usual tough, disciplined and tenacious lacrosse we have come to expect from the teams to the south. They had great quickness, an attacking defensive strategy, a continuously moving offense and a will to win that wouldn't be denied Saturday.

The season begins for Marian officially on Tuesday with a game against Birmingham at Seaholm. The junior varsity plays first at 5:30pm followed by the varsity at 7pm.

LACROSSE MAKES DEBUT AS A SANCTIONED SPORT
Tuesday, March 29, 2005

Burning Questions

61 boys teams and 38 girls teams pad up for rough activity in Michigan this year.

By Tom Markowski/The Detroit News

Q. What is your take on lacrosse, which debuts this spring as a Michigan High School Athletic Association-sanctioned sport?

A. It's a rough, fast-paced sport that can be entertaining, even if you don't know all the rules (and I will admit that I don't).

It won't draw huge crowds; most spring sports don't, except for a few state finals. But I do expect the sport to grow. This season there are 61 boys teams -- 32 in Division 1 and 29 in Division 2 -- and 38 girls teams, equally divided between the two divisions.

STICKS UP OHIO THOUGHTS ON APRIL 9 COMPETITION
The two Marian opponents, Ohio Division 1, at the HGT are:

Number 10 Worthington Kilbourne - Wolves were hurt by graduation, but return enough experience to catch some teams overlooking them.

Number 11 - Dublin Jerome Look out for this first year program. They have a lot of experienced players.

It looks like Marian will have their work cut out for them.

THE 2005 HANNIGAN GALIPAULT LACROSSE TOURNAMENT

The world of sports would be unpleasant. It is necessary to have sportsmanship."

CAPTAIN SCORES SCHOLARSHIP
Lauren Gaer is one of the nine spring sport athletes awarded the MHSAA Scholar Athlete scholarship from Farm Bureau Insurance. She was recognized for girl's lacrosse. Gaer is the first recipient for girl's lacrosse because this is the first year the MHSAA is sanctioning the sport. She will also be the only recipient ever because the format will change next year and awards by sport will not be given. Lauren Bennett is another Marian award recipient for girl's track and field.

Marian is one of only three schools with two sports recipients recognized for carrying at least a 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale) grade-point average, and who have previously won a letter in a varsity sport in which the Michigan High School Athletic Association sponsors a postseason tournament. Other requirements for the applicants were to show active participation in other school and community activities and produce an essay on the importance of sportsmanship in educational athletics. The other schools with two recipients are Harbor Springs and White Lake Lakeland. The Catholic High School League is represented by three girls. The two from Marian and a third from Harper Woods Regina.

You go girls!

TRI-CAPTAIN NAMED MHSAA SCHOLAR-ATHLETE AWARD FINALIST
One of Marian's lacrosse tri-captains, Lauren Gaer, was named a finalist for the Michigan High School Athletic Association's Scholar-Athlete Award. Lauren is one of two girls selected for lacrosse and one of 124 girl and boy finalists for all MHSAA recognized sports. It includes a $1,000 scholarship. The award recipient will be announced on February 15. Lauren shares captains' duties with Lauren Frizzo and Casey Roff for the 2005 season scheduled to begin in March. Marian's other finalist is Lauren Bennett in Track & Field.

WHO CAN CARRY THE BIG STICK?
An excerpt from an article by Dana Czapnik about Michigan's Jackie Fu titled "Small Frame, Big Heart" on page 84 of the January/February issue of Lacrosse Magazine

The Goalie. Lacrosse's unsung hero. Keeper of the net. Last line of defense. A player whose contribution never shows up on the scorboard at the end of the game, but whose efforts may well have determined the outcome.
They say that there is a personality - a "type" that tends to choose the same position on the field. Attackers like the limelight. Defenders crave physicality. Midfielders like a sampling of both. And goalies only function with the weight of the world on their shoulders. After all, goalies are people who voluntarily put themselves directly in the line of fire. And the good ones never even flinch.

MARIAN IN FINAL
The Birmingham Eccentric

The Birmingham Marian High School lacrosse squad played in the recent Division A championship game at Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook against Grosse Pointe South.

The Mustangs lost 18-11 despite the efforts of team most valuable players Katie Popovich (offense) and Lauren Frizzo (defense). Popovich was named All-American and is one of only two girls from Michigan to gain that honor this season.

Marian also had four Academic All-Americans, including Caitlin Conway, Frizzo, Lauren Gaer and Maggie Wagner.

The Mustangs, which won state lacrosse crowns in its first two years of competition, have never had a losing season. Marian completed the 2004 season with an 18-5-1 record.

THANK YOU COACHES
The Marian lacrosse family offers a hardy welcome to the new varsity coaches, Ginny Heth and Claudia Duerr. We know that they will usher in a new era in Marian Mustang Lacrosse.

And, you did. You took us back to where we should have been, the Oval.

We can't thank you enough for restoring the pride in Mustang Lacrosse.

SEASON ENDS ON HIGH NOTE IN OVAL
Victory would have been nicer but the Mustangs can hold their heads high as they lost 18 to 11 to the 2003 and 2004 Michigan Division A state champions, Grosse Pointe South Blue Devils. Marian battled back to within four goals but the relentless Blue Devils dropped it into another gear whenever Marian would make a charge and kept the game in hand.

Katie Popovich closed out her Marian career as the runner-up team's offensive MVP and Lauren Frizzo was named the defensive MVP for Marian.

Marian closes out the year at 18-5-1. It was a great performance by any measure but even more impressive when you know three of the losses were to Grosse Pointe South along with one to Loyola Academy, the second place team in Illinois with 26 victories on the year and Hathaway Brown, one of the best teams in Ohio with 17 wins on the season. Grosse Pointe South is currently the ninety first rated team in the country, the twelfth rated team in the Midwest and the number one team in Michigan. More impressive are the losses, if losses can be impressive, to Loyola Academy ranked number 23 in the nation, number two in the region and number one in Illinois or Hathaway Brown who is ranked number 59 in the country, number seven in the region and number three in Ohio. Marian's .750 winning percentage is one of the best ever in the short, five year, but successful history of Mustang lacrosse. Marian is ranked at 221 nationally, 25 in the Midwest and number two in the state of Michigan. You go girls!

This was also a year of many firsts and onlys. It was the first year we beat ASH, not once but three times, the last time, June 11, to qualify to play in the Oval. It was also the first time we have beaten Birmingham United. Marian won the first Catholic Schools lacrosse tournament. We had a player, Katie Popovich, on the US Lacrosse Great Lakes 1 region tournament team that went to the National Tournament at Lehigh University. Katie scored 18 goals and had six assists there. We are the only Michigan team to beat Grosse Pointe South, two-time Division A champions, in the past two seasons. It was at the Midwest Schoolgirl Lacrosse Association tournament at Shady Side in Pittsburgh. We also have three girls listed on LaxPower going on to play in college. They are Maureen Payne, Katie Popovich and Amanda Nadhir. This was our third trip to the Cranbrook Oval in only five years of existence. We have two state championship trophies and a runner up plaque to show for it. Who could ask for anything more from a team that has never had a losing record?

Hold your heads up and high. You made everyone proud. You should be too.

Your Marian lacrosse legacy is written and clear. You are winners!

MHSAA LAX NEWS
A three-tiered post-season tournament will debut in lacrosse in the spring of 2005, the first year the MHSAA will provide schools with services in that sport, raising the number of tournaments sponsored by the Association to 28, 14 for girls only and 14 open to both girls and boys.

There will be two divisions of post-season tournament play based on the enrollments of the participating schools. Two MHSAA Lacrosse Committees, one for girls and one for boys, will meet twice each during the school year – the first time in February to choose host sites for tournaments and place teams into Regions based on geography and program strength; the second time in May to set the pairings in each Region and select officials.

A third tier of the tournament will take place each year from 2005 to 2007 if a minimum of eight schools which are establishing their lacrosse programs for the first time declare prior to the February meeting of the Lacrosse Committee their intention to compete in this developmental level of competition.

“In order to provide schools with equitable competition opportunities in lacrosse, the Council has approved committee recommendations which may appear contrary to past positions the MHSAA has taken in regard to the seeding of tournaments,” said John E. “Jack” Roberts, executive director of the MHSAA. “A key to attracting schools to sponsor interscholastic lacrosse teams, allow them to grow and retain them in our ranks was to develop a start-up program for that sport which promotes such growth.”

It is expected that the first post-season tournaments in 2005 will consist of approximately 32 teams in each boys division and 16 teams in each girls division. The inaugural MHSAA Lacrosse Finals will take place on June 11, 2005.

SOUTH SHOWS MARIAN WHY IT'S TOP-RANKED LACROSSE TEAM
Web-posted May 26, 2004

By NATHAN MUELLER
Special to The Daily Oakland Press

BEVERLY HILLS - The Grosse Pointe South girl's lacrosse team continued its dominance of the state of Michigan with a 13-7 win over Birmingham Marian Tuesday.
The win assures the Blue Devils the No. 1 mark in the state, improving to 14-3 overall. South's three losses have come to out of state teams.

"This was not our best game," said South coach Debbe Pavle. "We are not seeing a lot of competition in the state this year."

Marian (11-4-1) came into the game ranked No. 2 but all hopes of an upset were quelled early. Grosse Pointe scored four unanswered goals, two by senior Allison Ambrozy, to take a 5-1 lead and command of the game.

Ambrozy finished with three goals and was constantly making things happen on the offensive end.

"She plays all over the field and is a beautiful player," Pavle said. "She's probably the top player in Michigan."

Fellow senior Casey Scavone also made her presence felt, scoring a game-high five goals. Scavone was aggressive going to the net and it paid off.

South led 6-2 at the half and that was the closest Marian would get. The Eagles put together a second half run, but every time they scored, Grosse Pointe had an answer. Usually in the form of Ambrozy or Scavone.

"They have a lot of skill and are very talented," Marian coach Ginny Heth said. "This is what happens when a team can gel and be together for four years."

Another major key to the game was the Blue Devils defense.

Marian was often cycling the ball in their offensive zone, but was unable to get a quality shot on net.

Pavle said that her depth is a major asset, and she was pleased with the way her team defended.

They held Marian to only two first half goals and five in the second half. The Eagles received two goals apiece from Lauren Frizzo, Katie Popvich, and Maureen Payne.

This is the second time this season that Grosse Pointe has defeated Marian, the other coming via a 16-8 win early in the season.

South seemed to be riding the momentum of its second place finish at the Midwest Tournament.

They defeated a team that was 19-0, before losing in the finals. It is the best finish a Michigan team has had in the tournament.

"We are playing awesome right now," Pavle said.

These two teams could meet again in the state finals, and with the way they have cruised through play in the state, it is almost sure bet.

Pavle doesn't underestimate the importance of this win because it gives them the No. 1 seed in the state tournament as well.

Marian is looking forward to a possible third match up and Heth said they will have to make some changes if they are going to be successful.

"I think every team has a little bit of a slump and that is where we are," she said. "We will change a few things and hope to step it up."

MARIAN DEFEATS ELLIS 8 - 6
Marian moves on to the winner's bracket to face second seeded Hathaway Brown, the defending MSLA Tournament champion. Hathaway Brown is a private all-girls' school from the Cleveland area with a record of 15-0-1. Gametime is 12:30pm, May 22.

WORDS FOR THE WISE
1. Win the race to the ball.
2. Win the one on one battle for the ball.
3. Play your position and let your teammates play theirs.
4. Play your position and the ball will come to you.
5. Make smart plays with the ball.
6. Don’t pass because you think you need to, pass because it is the right play.
7. Don’t be afraid to make a mistake.
8. Work together as a team. It’s not an individual game.
9. Be alert on the bench, know who you are replacing and covering on the field.
10. Be involved and in the right spot. Don’t stand still and watch.
11. Shoot the ball when you have a shot. A shot on goal is never a bad play.
12. Many goals are scored on rebounds. Go to the net on every shot looking for a rebound.
13. Mids help out defensemen in your own end by being in position for a pass when we get the ball.
14. The first pass in your own zone is the most important. Make sure it is on the stick.
15. Never turn your back on the ball. Know where it is at all times.
16. Don’t stand still with the ball. Get moving and make a play.
17. Work just as hard in your own end as you do in the other team’s end.
18. Our goalie should only have to make the first save. Clear rebounds quickly.
19. Don’t get yellow or red cards.
20. Play hard and play smart.

WHATEVER IT TAKES!
That's what the Mustangs say. Whatever it takes! What does it mean? Commitment, dedication, effort, laughter, pain, joy, tears and sacrifice are some of the things it means.

The 2004 Marian lacrosse teams say it means them too. Today is the day they begin to prove that they are going to do whatever it takes to achieve the goals they have as a team. That means they will do whatever it takes for each player individually and as a teammate to the rest of the girls on the teams to live up to their commitments to themselves, their coaches, their friends and classmates, their parents, the administration and to their opponents. They promise to do whatever it takes.

It's their legacy.

Whatever it takes! It takes whatever!

Have a great season Mustangs!

Saturday, July 5
GOODBYE SUSAN HOLLAND, BRUMBY/MARIAN LACROSSE COACH AND AD
Susan Holland, the first lacrosse coach in Brumby and Marian Mustang lacrosse history has left her Marian Athletic Director position for new chanllenges. We will miss her and the significant contributions she made to lacrosse and Marian athletics.

Susan helped to start lacrosse as a club, Brumby, for Marian student athletes. She gave them the spirit and will to learn the game as a scrimmage squad their first year. Those who stayed with Susan prospered with a State Championship in the second year as Brumby Lacrosse. She took Marian's first varsity lacrosse squad to a second consecutive Division B State Championship and elevation to Division A in just two seasons. Susan then stepped down as head lacrosse coach to devote her full attention to the Athletic Director's position.

Thank you!

2003 LAX SEASON DRAWS TO A CLOSE
It ended much the same way it started. Girl's lax being played on a cold, drizzly gray day in a month that started with M. The problem was that it was May not March but the temperature was struggling to reach 50 degrees. Under the dreary sky with the wind howling, the 2003 girl's lacrosse championships were played out in the Crabrook oval.

In the first game, Division B, at 10 AM Saturday morning, Flint Powers overpowered Farmington United by a score of 9 - 6.

In the second game that held great interest for Marian players and fans, Grosse Pointe South prevailed over Birmingham United by the same 9 to 6 score. Marian can take a little more satisfaction out of the season because they were the only Michigan team to beat South this season, during the MSLA tournament in Pittsburgh. In addition to having beaten South, Marian also defeated Powers Catholic in an inter-divisional game. So, with an 11 - 11 season record, two of the victories were recorded over divisional state champions. Good work Mustangs.

On Friday, May 30, Ladywood won the Division C title with a victory over Swartz Creek.

Wednesday, May 28
SEASON STOPS SHORT
Marian ended their season much too early with their worst loss at the worst time to the ASH Gazelles. Sacred Heart scored 13 goals to Marian's 2 to halt the Mustang's season at 11 - 11.

MUSTANGS WIN THREE AFTER LOSS TO HIGHLY RANKED SEWICKLEY ACADEMY

Saturday, Marian had a daunting task as the 16th seed going up against one of the best teams in the country in Sewickley Academy. The Mustangs did extremely well being the first team this year to hold Sewickley to single digits in an exciting and encouraging 9 to 1 loss. We followed it up with an afternoon game against a Pittsburgh school, Ellis, who were the ninth seeded team coming into the tournament. Ellis came away surprised and disappointed as the Mustangs beat them convincingly by a 7 to 5 score. That ended the day for Marian with a one win and one loss record and put us in the consolation bracket for Sunday. We went to bed knowing we would face an old nemesis in Grosse Pointe South who had already beaten Marian soundly twice this season. Maybe it was the 8:30 AM start time but South left the field 7 to 4 losers to the Mustangs. That meant that we would play Western Reserve Academy from Ohio for ninth place in the tournament, as high a position as we could achieve. In one of the most exciting games in the history of Marian lacrosse, we scored the winning goal with under 8 seconds remaining on the clock and controlled the ball for the remaining seconds to win the consolation bracket. The entire team did a great job bringing home such an awesome record while finishing ahead of Grosse Pointe South, Birmingham and Ann Arbor Pioneer in the final standings. Marian had the second best record of the five Michigan teams taking part in the MSLA tournament.

Thursday, May 15
VARSITY LOSES, JV WINS
The varsity ended their regular season with a 15 to 8 loss to Grosse Pointe. The defeat left them with an 8 win and 9 loss record going into this weekend's Midwest Scholastic Lacrosse Association tournament.

Our Junior Varsity ended a highly successful campaign with a stirring 8 to 7 victory over Grosse Pointe South. Their record is 8 wins, 0 losses and 2 ties in Division A. They are 9-1-2 overall. The Marian Mustang JV are the undefeated Division A champions!

Wednesday, May 14
ANN ARBOR PIONEER, MARIAN JV WIN
The Marian varsity played catch up all afternoon but ran out of time in a 10 to 8 loss giving us an 8 and 8 season record.

The JV continues their winning ways with a 9 to 2 victory and an 8 win, 1 loss, two tie record for the season with one game to play.

Wednesday, May 14
NUMBERS DON'T TELL THE WHOLE STORY
So how does the tenth ranked Sewickely Academy team Marian faces Saturday stack up against our 802nd ranked Mustangs? Well, the strength of schedule rating indicates that our schedule is considered the 214th toughest but that Sewickley's is only the 234th most difficult. We play some tough competition.

The great thing is that the game will be played on the field not in hardware or software. So until the clock indicates that the game is over, the team that scores the most will win. The score starts 0 to 0 and our chances are as good as theirs.

GO MUSTANGS!

Monday, May 12
BUSY WEEK
The week started off with a hard fought away victory over Mercy followed by a huge come from behind home win over Country Day. The Mustangs then lost to ASH at ASH by giving up a big lead in the second half of the Thursday game. Saturday, after the prom, we had to face top ranked Grosse Pointe South at 2 PM at South and lost, only to beat Grosse Pointe University Liggett in a 4 PM game at their field. A three win, two loss record isn't too bad for the week that was.

Monday, May 12
DOESN'T GET MUCH BIGGER, CAN'T GET MUCH BETTER
The sixteenth seed Marian Mustangs drew the top-seeded Sewickley Academy team in the first game of MSLA tournament in Pittsburgh this Saturday, May 17 at 11 AM. The game will be followed by a contest between Marian and either Nichols or Ellis at 2 PM.

GP SOUTH & GP UNIVERSITY LIGGETT
The games with Grosse Pointe South and Grosse Pointe University Liggett are varsity games only. Both games will be played in Grosse Pointe at each schools' respective home field.

The Grosse Pointe University Liggett game will be played at 4 PM at the University Liggett field. Directions are also available on this web site.

Both of these games are state playoff qualifying games, so get over to the east side and support the varsity in their hunt for the best possible seeding for the state tournament.

Friday, May 2
BIRMINGHAM TRIPS UP MARIAN
Birmingham proved to have a little too much for the Mustangs for the second time this season. Marian went down early and never caught up in a tough 8 to 6 loss.

Wednesday, April 30
MUSTANGS START SECOND SEASON
The break from lacrosse for Spring didn't start off too good. Marian went down to Cranbrook by two before they returned from the break to struggle to a 5 to 5 halftime score. It was a different story in the second half when the Mustang varsity came roaring out with three quick goals and ended up on the right end of a 14 to 8 victory.

Friday, April 4
OH, SO CLOSE, YES
The Mustang JV prevailed in their own version in the late game when fading light made it difficult at best. Marian's young players continually fought hard and managed to score the last goal with just 33 seconds remaining for an exciting 8 to 7 victory over their counterparts, the Academy of the Sacred Heart Gazelles.

Friday, April 4
A BIG ONE THAT GOT AWAY
In what can only be described as a spirited bout between two lacrosse heavyweights, Sacred Heart's team speed and anticipation early in the game enabled them to later hang on for a hard fought 9 to 7 win over the Mustangs.

Wednesday, April 2
MUSTANGS ROLL
Cranbrook broke into the scoring column first but in the end Marian had too much firepower. The varsity came back from an early deficit to put 19 goals up on the board. Katie Popovich had 5 goals, and an assist and Amanda Nadhir added three and two assists. The JV produced a fun-filled 10 to 4 victory in their game.

Thursday, March 27
MUSTANGS AND MAPLES IN MORE CLOSE ONES
The varsity and junior varsity games between these two programs continue to be hard fought. The varsity game went down to the wire with Birmingham surviving a late game rush by the Mustangs for an 8 to 7 victory in the first outing of the season for Marian. The JV fought back from a 3 to 0 halftime deficit to tie the game at 5 each. Way to keep battling teams. The best is yet to come.
