Maksym earns All State honors

Manistee pitcher named D3 honorable mention

Julia Maksym was selected as a Division 3 All-State honorable mention by the Michigan High School Softball Coaches Association. She went 30-5 with a 0.68 ERA and 350 strikeouts. Offensively, she also hit .455 with 10 doubles and a triple.
“They look at her numbers and they also look at her academics,” said her dad and Manistee coach, Paul Maksym. “Academically, she’s got a 3.7 grade point average. They look at the whole player concept. Numbers help, but you want to be well rounded, too.”
The competition for the All-State team was stiff. She was in a tough class where a lot of the pitchers went on to win the semifinals and finals and were the All-State girls. Maksym worked hard these last four years and she was recognized for her hard work.

“If I didn’t have the team I did that backed me up, I don’t think I would have gotten this,” she said. “I never expected our team to be 30-5.”

With one season left in high school, Julia is hoping to reach a number of milestones. She was three wins and 10 strikeouts shy of the minimums for being placed in the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s single-season record books. Oh, and the Chippewas had eight games rained out this season. While Julia would like to reach those lofty numbers, and also has 1,000 career strikeouts in her sights next season, she’s more focused on team goals; winning regionals next year.

Chips end successful season at Regionals against Pine River
Julia Maksym matched Pine River's pitcher step for step for five innings in the Division 3 softball regional semifinals at Lakeview High School. The game was scoreless after five innings before a combination of the Bucks finding a bead on Maksym and the Chippewas having problems fielding the ball resulted in a five-run inning for Pine River in the top of the sixth.
“I predicted a closer score than that, but ... we made some big errors,” Manistee coach Paul Maksym said. “They were quick on the bases and got us into some situations where we had to think where to throw the ball and made some mistakes. They’re a good team and we knew that coming in.”
The Chippewas came back with a threat in the bottom of the inning and eventually scored two runs on a ground ball by Rhiannon Robker that got out of the infield to draw to within 5-2. Pine River put the game away in the top of the seventh with three more runs, thanks in part to three Chippewa errors and a two-run double by Pine River.
“We’re a young team and hopefully our girls learned from it,” said Paul Maksym, noting that his roster includes three juniors, five sophomores and three freshmen.
Manistee finished with six hits, including three by Kristen Merkey and two by Rhiannon Robke. Maksym finished with 11 strikeouts and just two of the Bucks’ eight runs were earned.
It was a day of redemption for Pine River, which went on to defeat nemesis Morley Stanwood 3-2 in the regional final. The Chippewas eliminated the Bucks in last season’s regional tournament.
Paul Maksym praised his team’s work ethic after the group finished with an impressive 30-5 record. “A majority of this team has been in conditioning since January,” he said. “They know hard work is going to produce good results. Thirty-and-five is evidence of their hard work.”

Chips win back-to-back district titles

The players’ hard work throughout the year paid off winning this District Title.  As a team they are playing well together and if they continue to perform to their potential, their enthusiasm and momentum will be a factor at the Regional games.

In the opener against Mason County Central, Manistee turned eight hits into seven runs and took a first-inning lead it never relinquished. “It broke the ice,” Paul Maksym said. “It was nice to get that first run in.” Becca Brown led the way at the plate for the Chippewas with two hits and an RBI, Katye Melchert had a triple, while Julia Maksym, Taylor Ozimac, Rhiannon Robke, Maeve Lagerquist, Heather Hansen and Hannah Sartor each picked up a hit. Manistee took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning on a bases-loaded walk to Alyssa Tarnowski before play was halted due to thunder and lightning in the distance.

After a 30-minute delay, the Chippewas went ahead by three as Kristen Merkey drove in a run. Brown added an RBI single in the sixth and Ozimac drove in two later in the inning. Julia Maksym allowed just three hits and two walks to go with 11 strikeouts.

In the district championship against Shelby, the Chippewa offense came through with 14 hits. Ozimac led the way with three hits, including a double and an RBI. Brown went 2-3 with a double and two RBIs, Merkey went 2-4, while Julia Maksym, Robke, Lagerquist, Melchert and Alexa Schneider each had a hit. Manistee jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning as Merkey doubled, Brown drove her in with an RBI single and Lagerquist hit an RBI double. Shelby scored a run in the bottom of the first before Manistee added three more in the second with a two-run double by Ozimac for the 6-1 lead.

“Those six runs in the first two innings were big,” Paul Maksym said. “The girls hit the ball well that game.” Manistee closed the scoring with an RBI single from Tarnowski in the third inning. Julia Maksym allowed five hits and recorded 10 strikeouts.
