CARLE PLACE 76, MALVERNE 61
Kiernan drives Frogs' win over Mules

Carle Place point guard Bobby Kiernan wasn't the leading scorer, but no one left a bigger imprint on last night's boys basketball clash for first place in Nassau Conference BC.

When Kiernan wasn't delivering pinpoint passes or setting up teammates, he was nailing clutch shots. The last time these teams played, Kiernan wasn't in the lineup. Malverne won. This time, Carle Place pulled off a 76-61 upset of Malverne before a home crowd of 300.

Kiernan, a 6-2 senior transfer from St. Dominic, broke his left wrist in the first scrimmage of the season. He returned to the lineup one game after Carle Place lost, 65-62, to Malverne on Jan. 11. Kiernan has ignited the offense in the seven games since -- all Carle Place victories. Now the Frogs (12-3, 9-2), one year after a 9-10 season, appear to be a serious challenger for the Class B Nassau crown.

"Basketball is my life," said Kiernan, who finished with 12 points, 11 assists and was the last starter to leave the floor. "It hurt me to sit on the bench when I was injured. This win was great. We want to run the table. That's three more games."

Kiernan controlled the tempo and dumped the ball into the low post, where seniors Justin Schmiemann and Chris Conlon feasted. Schmiemann, a 6-3 forward, tied a career best with 31 points and set a mark with 21 rebounds. Conlon, a 6-4 four-year starter, had 22 points and 16 rebounds.

The Frogs reeled off a 13-2 run, capped by Kiernan's three-pointer at the buzzer, to give Carle Place a 35-29 edge at intermission.

Kiernan appeared unfazed by the pressure defense and Carle Place closed the game with a 13-4 spurt.

"He brings a sense of confidence to the team," Carle Place coach Jim Colligan said of his top guard. "We were a team that could get intimidated against certain schools. He closes the gap."
*********************************************
Game Highlights - 2/9/05
Great Neck South 69, Division 47: Rory Grady had 19 points and 10 rebounds for South (8-2 Conference A-I).
*********************************************
Game Highlights - 2/15/05
St. Mary's 75, Kellenberg 24: Gerard Fitts had 13 points, five rebounds and three blocks as St. Mary's (20-0 CHSAA) went undefeated for the third straight season, marking the first time a CHSAA school has accomplished that feat.
*********************************************
Game Highlights - 2/11/05
Carle Place 77, East Rockaway 53: Bobby Kiernan scored 20 points, seven assists and three steals.

*********************************************
Game Highlights - 2/16/05
Great Neck South 64, Seaford 45: Rory Grady had 12 points and eight rebounds for Great Neck South (9-3 Conference A-I).
*********************************************
Game Highlights - 2/16/05

Game Highlights 2/19/05
Massapequa 64, Long Beach 51: Kevin Vosilla's dunk started a 10-0 run to open the third quarter as No. 5 Massapequa turned a one-point halftime lead into a 48-35 advantage after three quarters in a Class AA first round game. Vosilla had 30 points and 22 rebounds.

New Rochelle upsets Mt. Vernon for AA title
Game Highlights - 2/23/05
WHITE PLAINS — Ray Rice delivered a season-high 18 points as second-seeded New Rochelle pulled the shocker and ended No. 5 Mount Vernon's five-year reign as sectional champs with a 72-65 win in the Class AA title game. An overflowing Westchester County Center crowd — some of which stood the entire game just to be there — witnessed destiny outlast dynasty in the sections best rivalry. The title is the first since 1987 for the Huguenots (23-1), who advanced to Tuesday's regional semifinal at the Westchester County Center against the Section 9 champion, which will be crowned this weekend. They are two wins away from reaching the state final four. The shots stopped falling for the Huguenots in the third quarter, and Mount Vernon took advantage. But just when it seemed the Knights were going to take control — Rice was there to rescue the offense. He scored five straight points that ignited a 15-2 run which helped the Huguenots build a 53-41 lead entering the fourth. As expected, Mount Vernon wouldn't go quietly. Again, there was Rice. He put in a wide-open layup to extend the lead as New Rochelle wrapped up the title.
