Mainland Boys Cross Country: Coach Fred Moderski '81-'94

Coach Fred Moderski (1981-1994)
Coach Fred Moderski is the man who really started is all. He was the team coach from 1981 -1994. His training and leadership still can be seen today, as many of the team’s traditions were started in his time. Coach Moderski was the head coach during what we now consider the “Golden Age” of Mainland XC.

Under Coach Moderski, the team brought home Mainland’s first County title in 1991, and followed it up with County Championships from 1992-1994. The team had the individual winner each year during that streak.

Coach Moderski won four Division titles from 1991-1994. The team went undefeated in back to back seasons, winning both the CAL American Conference and overall League titles in 1993 and 1994.

The team won the South Jersey Open in 1992, and the Shore Coaches Invitational in 1993.

The team brought home Mainland’s first South Jersey Group III title in 1991, and made it two in a row by repeating in 1992. The team was a close runner-up in 1993 and 1994. The team qualified for the State Meet during those four years, rising to 4th in both 1992 and 1993.

Coach Moderski developed such “Golden Age” stars as Chris Bolden, Kurt and Geoff Wayton, and Scott Keyser. Bolden made it to the MOC as an individual in 1991. Geoff Wayton won the South Jersey Group III title in 1993. Geoff Wayton also made the MOC in 1992 and 1993. Kurt Wayton made the MOC from 1992-1994. Geoff Wayton was the S.J.T.C.A. Runner of the Year in 1993.

In track, Coach Moderski was behind our current Distance Medley record (10:28.5 - 1995), State Champions Kurt Wayton (1600m - 1995), and Scott Keyser (3200m - 1996). He was also the distance coach when the team won it’s only Sectional Track title in 1996.

Without the contributions by Coach Fred Moderski, there would be no great history of Mainland Cross Country and Track. His years have laid down the foundation that the team has been building on for the last 9 years.
