Luke Holman Knocks Out Saints as Mahanoy Scores 19 in 5th
Luke Holman started and went 4 innings to pick up the mound win as Mahanoy City knocked off Saint Clair 24-5 to move to 2-1 in pool play.
Holman, following in his brother Jake's footsteps as a pitcher, gave up 5 runs on 5 hits with 4 walks and 4 strikeouts. Aydan Erbe came on in relief to pitch the 5th inning and did not allow a run. Erbe gave up 1 hit, walked 1 and struck out 2 in his relief appearance.
Mahanoy City struck first by scoring a run in the top of the 1st inning. Erbe singled and scored on an RBI single by Brian Miller. Mahanoy then took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Greg Merchlinsky singled, moved to second on a single to right by Erin Davidson and scored on a fielder's choice by Derek Weicikosky.

St. Clair took a 4-2 lead by scoring 4 runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning when 9 batters came to the plate. Mahanoy City stormed back to tie the game at 4-4 in the top of the 3rd inning. Brad Freil led off with a triple to left center and scored when Brian Miller reached 1st on an error at 2nd base. Miller moved around the bases and scored when Luke Holman dropped a perfect bunt down third for a base hit.
Holman retired the St. Clair hitters in the bottom of the 3rd inning on 6 pitches. Mahanoy came on to take a one run lead in the top of the 4th at 5-4 when Aydan Erbe singled and moved around the bases to score on 3 wild pitches.
St. Clair tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the 4th on three straight singles. At that point things fell apart for the Saints in the top of the 5th inning.
Mahanoy's fifth inning 19 run outburst put the game away. Jason Richmond opened the inning with a double, Pat Wargo laid down a perfect bunt single, Luke Holman walked and the bases were loaded for Greg Merchlinsky. Zach Wetzel came in to relieve and Merchlinsky was hit with a pitch scoring Richmond. Kyle Karlavage singled to drive in Wargo and Holman. Derek Weicikosky reached on an error and Erbe walked to load the bases.
Brad Freil reached on an error in centerfield scoring Merchlinsky and Brian Miller walked to load the bases one more time. Richmond went down on strikes for the first out and then Pat Wargo singled to drive in Karlavage. Luke Holman took one for the team and reached first on a HBP. Greg Merchlinsky walked to score Weicikosky.
St. Clair changed pitchers and brought in Brandon Close who gave a Kyle Karlavage his 2nd single of the inning. Erbe and Freil scored on the hit. Derek Weicikosky walked, Erbe singled and Freil singled to load the bases again. Brian Miller then tripled deep to left centerfield to clear the bases. Jason Richmond followed with his 2nd double of the inning to deep left field to score Miller.
Saint Clair brought in Justin Yanek to relieve. Patrick Wargo walked and Luke Holman grounded out pitcher to first scoring Richmond. Greg Merchlinsky and Erin Davidson both walked as Wargo moved around the bases scoring on a wild pitch for the 19th run of the inning. Derek Weicikosky flied out to the pitcher to end the inning.
Aydan Erbe then came on to relieve and retired the side in the bottom of the fifth to end the game at 24-5.
